A SPECIAL VISIT AND ANOTHER STEP-CHANGE On Thursday 6th May, the Bishop of Rochester was pleased to visit the team that has so faithfully run the Farmers’ Market in its pandemic ‘Click & Collect’ format. Bishop James is retiring in July and, ahead of this, he has Shipbourne Village Hall been undertaking visits right across the Diocese, deanery by deanery. He Registered Charity No 1074519 was pleased to hear the story of how the market has coped with the challenges of the pandemic, pleased to buy fresh fish for his evening meal, and looking forward to helping out with the Farmers’ Market in Moseley, The village hall remains closed for the time being but this is under Birmingham after his retirement. constant review by the Trustees Helen Leach On the morning of 13th May the Farmers’ Market team undertook the ‘Click & Collect’ duties for the last time in the format that has served so well For enquiries please call 01732 811144 or throughout the pandemic. They were truly heartened by the numerous 07762 241720 or email [email protected] messages of thanks, as customers filed through in their cars for the last Further details can be found on the Shipbourne website time. As I write, (always ahead of the copy-date!) the proverbial ‘clutch’ of www.shipbourne.com the Farmer’s market is pressed down hard for a big gear-change, and next week is anticipated as the first week back in Church Approach and the Church itself.

There will still be a ‘Click and Collect’ facility, ‘Coffee Corner’ will not be able to function for a few weeks yet, and we will need to be very careful with social distancing both inside and outside. It’s amazing how differently you see things under challenging circumstances: both at weddings and during the pandemic, we have learnt that the Church and ever its car-park are really quite ‘bijoux’ – with some distinctly narrow spaces and bottle-necks that will need to be monitored and navigated carefully while social distancing remains in force – that we had never noticed before.

As things continue to open up, we look forward to more freedoms in worship. The choir are on their way back, and everybody looks forward to the day when we can all sing again. We hope to celebrate the government’s anticipated end of regulations with a ‘Praise and Picnic’ on Shipbourne (courtesy of Fairlawne Estate) at 12.30pm instead of the 9.30 Family Service at the end of June (Sunday 27th). We hope to have games too; offers of equipment, organisation and refereeing welcome. The sporting hope is that we can truly, ‘Kick Covid into touch!’ (not my pun!)

We look forward to the busy and careful tasks of timing and preparing for when other church activities can come back ‘on-stream’ safely.

RICHARD HEDLEY McCORMACK MBE 1954-2021 Throughout his all too short life, Richard McCormack earned and received the respect of colleagues and associates. His was a distinguished and varied career, and one in which he excelled. PLAXTOL PEST Richard’s attributes and achievements were well known within the British Army and L PES O T AND WILDLIFE universally recognized in the Fairlawne community and its surrounding Parishes. XT A th A N Richard’s death on 9 March was unexpected and untimely. A casualty of the L D P Pandemic, possibly, in the absence of regular/accessible medical care. MANAGEMENT

T

What is certain, however, is that Richard’s family and those who came to know him W N E Ciaran Payne are the poorer for his absence. I L M D E L I G th F A One of nine children, Richard Hedley McCormack was born on 10 February, 1954, E AN 07368 605762 on the Isle of Man, and as a son of the military, his father served in the Royal Air M Force, lived as far afield as Aden, Germany and Aldershot. Leaving school at 17, [email protected] Richard enlisted into the Coldstream Guards, and thus, continued the peripatetic life WWW.PLAXTOLPEST.CO.UK of his youth. After his marriage to Wendy in 1977, career demands meant frequently moving his family as well. This in turn required Wendy’s understanding, which she freely gave. To have done otherwise would have inhibited Richard’s advancement, which ultimately lead to Sandhurst in 1994. His promotion to Academy Sergeant Major, traditionally then the senior Warrant Officer in the British Army, led further to the unique privilege of being appointed Regimental Sergeant Major of both the First and Second Battalions Coldstream Guards.

On his departure from Sandhurst, Richard accepted a commission which in due course led to the rank of Major. He was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 1998.

Having served 35 years, Richard left the Army in 2006 and settled in Plymouth. Within less than two years, however, retirement gave way to a second calling, and in July, 2007, Richard assumed his duties as Manager of the Fairlawne Estate. He quickly settled into his new role at Fairlawne and life in Shipbourne. A plethora of skills acquired in the Army were unreservedly and effectively put to use. And the rest is history.

As we came to learn, Richard was a private man, which was Simon’s opening remark in his father’s Eulogy, and possessed what has been described as ‘a hugely developed sense of humour and quick wit, which reflected a considerable intellect’. Exceedingly loyal to the Estate, his associates, and in equal measure to his friends and family, Richard took a keen interest in the wide spectrum of his responsibilities, from forestry to gardens to architecture and art and certainly to the culinary. Richard particularly enjoyed reminiscing about the Army with Guns on the shoots, with whom he found ample common ground. His recitation of ‘We shall remember them’ was a fixture at the St. Giles’ Remembrance Day Service. Richard McCormack’s integrity and reliability served him well, and earned him the high level of respect, to which reference was made in my opening remarks.

We at Fairlawne and its Parishes mourn his loss, and wish only the best for Wendy, Simon and Kelly. James Swartz

END OF LOCKDOWN PETER’S PRAYERS, PICNIC AND FUN & GAMES ON THE GREEN*

SUNDAY 27 JUNE 2021 JUNE AT SHIPBOURNE FARMERS’ MARKET Hopefully, we should be almost back to normal operations when you 12 noon to 3pm read this.

Shipbourne Common (by tennis courts) The ‘On-line drive/thru’‘ market was developed last March as a with thanks to Fairlawne stopgap solution to enable our small producers to continue to earn a living and customers to continue to purchase local produce. It turned out that Shipbourne and Whitstable were the only Farmers Market to stay open at that time. By July when the first Covid wave started to diminish a few other Farmers Markets opened, albeit under very stringent conditions and when queuing became the norm.

We have to thank Harry Rayner, our local KCC Councillor, as well as both Shipbourne and Ightham Parish Councils for helping us to fund the development of the computer system. In fact, in those early days it was our PC Chairman, Nick Tyler, who with his ‘family safe bubble’ enabled us to overcome the logistics of sorting the orders. In Come and re-meet your neighbours and join addition, our Parish Clerk, Sarah Hussein, organized a band of the village in marking the end of lockdown volunteers to deliver orders to those who were sheltering and could not get out. Not only did we have to contend with implementing a restrictions brand new system and concept (to us) we had to contend with a major increase in demand (even though we didn’t sell toilet rolls!). • Prayers by Rev Dr Peter Hayler So, 58 markets and 3000 Orders later we moved back to the Church • Bring your own picnic, drinks & rugs still following various Covid related regulations.

• Fun & games for all ages Some of our Producers cannot spare the time to run their businesses and run a stall at the market so we have to decided to continue with the on-line/pre-pay system but you will have to pick *Subject to weather and the planned release from Covid restrictions up your orders. In one of my more recent columns I promised to cease to write about the minutiae of the Tonbridge & Malling Draft Local Plan - I felt that I had of necessity, rather overdone it. Nevertheless, I want to take the opportunity here to confirm that I shall continue to work in co- operation with those six parish councils seeking to oppose aspects of the draft local plan and in particular the massive (3000 new houses) Borough Green Gardens development. I am proud of the co- ordinating role that I have played in recent years, assisting the Local

The current indications are that Tonbridge & Malling Borough will continue with a slightly revised version of the existing draft local plan, but crucially, without the significant changes that might enable the support of the Local Parish Council Alliance.

Almost all local parish councils have either prepared, or are in the process of preparing parish wide Highways Improvement Plans. I have undertaken to use my best endeavours to ensure that these will be taken forward and more importantly implemented promptly during this term of office.

Next month I intend to write about the current 2 tier arrangement of local government and replacement by unitary councils that provide better value for all council tax payers.
