ANNUAL REPORT 2019

PRESIDENT’S REPORT With my second season at the helm, we on the committee looked at this season to build upon the last, continuing to modernise the association by taking it into the digital age. This along with further strengthening our relationship with the WACA has seen us providing continued value to our members. Over the past two seasons we’ve been able to:

- Automate with the use of technology and online forms our ▪ Membership Registration, ▪ Life Membership Nominations, ▪ Committee Membership Nominations, ▪ Merchandise Ordering, - Use Microsoft SharePoint for the committee’s data and Microsoft Teams for our committee meetings, - Implement fidelity to our finances, allowing us to accurately budget and forecast. - Improve use of our website with meeting minutes published as they are approved, - Communicate with clarity to our members with our website committee reports, - Get adopted an improved and fair payment system, with many game formats seeing substantial pay increases for the first time in a generation. E.g. Under 15’s and 17’s Grand Finals received a $60 increase, - Re-invent our merchandise, adopting our black and gold state colours. We now have wheel bags and new notebook covers on top of the jackets and shirts we usually have, - Use survey data to have a comparable dataset of each season so we and the WACA can use your honest feedback to compare how we’re performing, - Play a large part in re-writing and supporting the WADCC and WAFCC Playing Conditions, - Build a two-way, open and communicative relationship with the entire WACA Cricket Operations Unit, - Increase the number of social events on our calendar, - Increase our membership count, - Have the 3rd Annual Season Dinner of this era hosted at the WACA Ground, the home of cricket, and, - Pass the Memorandum of Understanding with the WACA.

This list just shows the absolute triumph and above all else determination the committee of this and last season has had. We’re now truly a ‘working smarter, not harder’ association able to now focus on bigger and more progressive things. The work of each committee member has been fantastic and I personally couldn’t have done it without you all; thank you!

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Not to call out individuals on my committee, but there is one member I would like to call out in my report. I know David Campbell is no longer with us, but his involvement in this association for the small amount of time he was with us was profound. Dave embodied the values of this association and was a beacon of joy for the 2017-18 committee. Dave’s plan was always to continue as a committee member for the 2018-19 season, but his health eventually prevented his nomination this season. Dave was an inspiring contributor to our association even when in his later months he was quite ill; never a quitter. Losing Dave at the start of this season had a massive impact on me, honestly re-shaping me for the season ahead. Nothing prepared me for the loss and it still hurts knowing we spoke only weeks before about your small improvements. I’m honoured to have worked with you and called you a friend. RIP mate, CHONK ON.

Next season will be an exciting one, with the first steps into the new era of WA Premier Cricket umpiring. The Memorandum of Understanding between us and the WACA plays a big part of that and I’m very much looking forward to seeing it implemented for the absolute benefit of our members. The wider membership and the committee for the next season should be proud to be the first pioneers moving our association and umpiring in a new fresh direction!

This isn’t the only thing for next season. John Sherry, with the assistance of Bill Reynolds, has been working tirelessly on something truly impressive we cannot wait to share. It will be the next piece of our merchandise collection and I believe will add a highly professional touch to our umpiring.

Congratulations to everyone who surpassed milestones or made their debut this season. I hope every part of your cricket umpiring career this season has seen the association giving you the support you’re after. If it hasn’t, please make sure to talk to the committee for what you need!

Lastly, thank you Mick Martell and Perth Metro Property Group for your sponsorship. We honestly are very thankful for your decade long support. We’re here because of you.

It’s an absolute privilege to be your President.

Cheers,

Trent Trent Steenholdt WACUA President

SECRETARY’S REPORT The 2018-19 season saw the WACUA’s membership numbers rise once again. It is great seeing so many new faces joining us at our meetings and events. Our monthly meetings continued to be a fantastic opportunity to learn from our fellow umpires and to share our experiences. We had some great events across the season including the Life Members’ breakfast and the Grand Final Breakfast both held this season at the Mantra on Hay. This season we saw the introduction of the “Back to Base Drinks” held twice across the season. These events proved extremely popular and were a great addition to the WACUA social calendar. The highlight of the season would have to be the third WACUA Annual Dinner held for the first time in the Boundary Room at the WACA. It was a lovely evening celebrating the end of the season and thanking those who have supported us along the way.

Thank you all for your support throughout the 2018-19 season. Have a wonderful winter and I look forward to seeing everyone again for the 2019-20 season!! Ashlee Gibbons WACUA Secretary

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

TREASURER’S REPORT Hello everyone, and thanks for reading my treasurer’s report. At last year’s AGM, I reported that we’d made $2043 more than we had spent for the season. I also announced that if I was to be re-elected as treasurer, I’d push to spend all the money that we collected for the year in order to return more value to our members. At our first committee meeting following the AGM we discussed this informally, and at our October committee meeting I presented a budget that showed us spending $1175 more than we would collect. I would like to emphasise that spending more was always a plan, and we did so through subsidies such as significant discounts on merchandise (particularly the bags) and end of season dinner tickets. We also provided numerous bar tabs throughout the season at general meetings and at Saturday drinks, and held the T20 game – an additional social event.

I’m happy to report that although we ended the year lower on funds than what we started with, spending came in a bit under budget. Our loss for the year was $648.34, as you can see from the figures at the end of this document.

As with last year, the finances will be up on our website. If you’d like a detailed look at what’s come in and gone out, you can find the spreadsheet for the association’s financial year at http://www.wacua.asn.au/information/finances/.

Thanks again for supporting me over the course of the year. I look forward to seeing everyone again at the AGM and during the 2019/2020 season. Andrew Micenko WACUA Treasurer

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

OBITUARIES DAVID ANTHONY CAMPBELL 28 October 1963 - 10 October 2018

For those who knew Dave, there were three loves in his life. His love for cricket, which brought him to us, his love for the Geelong Football Club which he would remind everyone about and his son Alex of whom he was very proud.

Born October of 1963, Dave grew up in Perth with his older brother Hugh and sisters Janette and Colleen. Sport was a big part of the family which saw the brothers play both football and cricket from a young age. As they grew older, Hugh moved to the USA for work, but it was sport that kept them all in regular contact even though the distance was vast.

Dave joined the umpiring family looking for some extra pocket money for himself. Not long after however, Dave had become the social lifeblood of the association, cooking the sausage sizzle at our monthly meetings, being involved and contributing to every event we held and joining the committee for the 2017-18 season. When Dave couldn’t umpire because of his commitments and eventually his health, he would still be around cricket grounds each Saturday and Sunday supporting his fellow members.

Dave’s umpiring career tally grew quickly in a short period of time by umpiring both junior and senior men’s cricket on the same day. In total Dave umpired 61 matches, 28 Senior, 11 Junior and 22 Female. Some of those games were officiated while Dave was being treated for his cancer, a true testament to his character and the fighter he was until the very end.

Dave sadly lost his battle to cancer just three years after his debut.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

CLIVE ANTHONY REYNOLDS 28 October 1963 - 10 October 2018

Anyone who partnered Clive Reynolds realised how meticulous he was with his appearance and equipment. The same applied to his garden at home in Roleystone when he resided in Perth.

Seaman, sports physio, umpire, postman were all part of his repertoire. And always glad to pass on his experiences to his younger colleagues.

English born, he came to Perth as a sports physio with a leading soccer club in the 1970s. He also had a love of cricket and joined the WACA district competition in the 1983-84 season. He graduated to first grade two seasons later, and over a 14 year career stood in 276 matches. 134 were in first grade and another 42 were in the Sunday League.

That was not all as he added to that with a myriad of mid-week matches for which he made himself available. His proudest moment was being selected to stand in the Lilac Hill Festival fixture in October 1993 when New Zealand toured.

When he retired the family decided to return to England and he lived on the east Yorkshire coast. The draw of cricket saw him sit for the English umpires’ exams, which he duly passed. He stood in both local leagues and the Second XI competition. He also played some golf and lawn bowls until he completely retired.

He leaves his wife, Alma, and a daughter, who also loves in England.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

EYRE JAMES D’ARCY EVANS 26 July 1935 – 2 September 2018

Jim, or D’Arcy, as he was known, was born in England but he and his parents migrated to Australia in the early stages of World War II. They settled in Fremantle and Jim was educated locally. A keen cricketer he joined the Fremantle Cricket Club and began with the juniors before rising through the grades.

However, on leaving school he joined a shipping company and that meant some time away from the port when representing the company when a visiting ship was in attendance. So he was content to play in the lower grades and mentor the promising younger players. He was a stickler for protocol and fair play and tried to instil that in his charges.

In his later playing days he took part in the club’s administration before deciding to involve himself in umpiring. He began in the district competition in 1967-68 and it was not long that his competency was recognised. He was elevated to first grade in his second season and over a 15 season career stood in 233 matches. 152 of them were in first grade, and 26 in Sunday League.

Such was his standing that in 1973 he made his first class debut. Over the next seven seasons he stood in 10 Sheffield Shield matches, 4 internationals, and 2 interstate one-day matches. The highlight of which was standing in a women’s Test match between Australia and India in January 1977. In 1980 he was made a Life Member of the Umpire’s Association.

He retired after the 1981-82 season and offered himself to the Umpires Appointment Board. He diligently occupied this position for five seasons before ill health saw him retire, although he still kept a keen interest in the umpiring fraternity.

He passed away leaving his wife, Pam, a son and two daughters.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

VICTOR MARK STEVENS 24 April 1952 – 23 August 2018

Born and educated in the Kelmscott area Vic was like most youngsters. Keen on all sports but not gifted enough to a champion. On completing his schooling he joined the state transport authority that was a separate organisation from the public service.

When of age he was called up for national service at the time of the Vietnam War. He stayed with army for a period but returned to WA and resumed with his former employer. Extra studies saw him elevated to more senior positions and allowed his flexible work times. He also, through the success of some work colleagues, took to umpiring WACA district cricket.

Starting in 1984 it was not long before he graduated to first grade in his second season. Over the next fifteen seasons he stood in 241matches of which 107 were in first grade and 37 in Sunday League. He was also chosen for some additional Second XI interstate matches.

Not content with just field activities he took on the administrative role of minute secretary. This position he held for 11 years from 1989 to 2000. In 2000-01 he was elected President of the Umpires Association – his last season as a participating umpire. During his tenure he was an integral part of the re-write of the association’s constitution.

Due to a transfer in his employment to Mandurah he was unable to continue after one season.

He passed away leaving his wife, Viv, a son and a daughter.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019

JOSEPH DELLAPOSTA 10 Janurary 1953 – 15 July 2018

Joe Dellaposta came to notice when he was selected for Perth’s first grade team as a 51-year old middle order batsman. In a disjointed playing career that was in two phases he played 109 matches and scored 2603 runs with four centuries. He is best remembered in that he still holds a club record for a fieldsman with 5 catches in an innings which he took against Scarborough at Abbett Park in 1981.

He spent a number of years in country centres as a teacher. In that time he also represented them at the Country Week carnival. Firstly it was with Central Wheatbelt in 1979 and 1980, and then with Karlgarin-Hyden in 1990. In the former he was also selected in the Country XI against the state team in the Sunday fixture. Joe made a hundred for each association.

Like all fathers he followed his sons, John and Andrew, through the junior grades at Perth and the Darlot Cup at Aquinas. When Andrew graduated to senior ranks in 2008 he decided to try his hand a umpiring. After five seasons and 84 matches he stood down for personal reasons. He had stood in 25 first grade matches and 9 Sunday League in that time.

OBITUARIES CONTINUED The Western Australian Cricket Umpires’ Association also wishes to pay tribute to the other umpires who passed away during the last twelve months.

LAURIE HARROD He stood for two seasons in 1989-90 and 1990-91 and 22 matches before he suffered from tinnitus and had to retire.

JIM AVRAAMIDES Umpires for 5 seasons from 1998-99 to 2003-04 for a total of 73 matches. Most were in second and third grade. His other passion was golf at Mosman Park club.

LARRY HALSE Had one season in 1996-87 before a country transfer prevented him from continuing in the Perth competitions.
