Revelation Notes 2020 - Laurelwood 85 "The Heart Response to a Perfect Earth" Revelation 20 After the tribulation on the earth and the return of the King to the earth to destroy all the kings of the earth, Jesus will set up His earthly kingdom and rule over the whole world in perfect conditions on the earth. JESUS CHRIST WILL REIGN ON THE EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS, 20:1-15 The transition between Revelation 19 and Revelation 20 is the transition to the fulfillment of the Abrahamic contract and the completion of the kingdom program of God. The kingdoms of this world become the kingdom of our Lord (Revelation 11:15), the King of Kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). He will reign for 1000 years and then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom up to the Father (1 Corinthians 15:23-28) so that God may be all in all. Excursus 1: Review of Eschatological Frameworks Three theological grids: the postmillennial, the amillennial, and the premillennial take their names and point of departure from Revelation 20:1-8, where Christ is said to reign 1,000 years, a period which has been called the “millennium.” The word “millennium” comes from the Latin word for 1000. The Greek word for “1000” is χιλιοι chilioi, from which chiliasm is derived. For further study of these three different theological positions, see J. Dwight Pentecost, Things to Come, chapter 22 (XXII). A. Postmillennialism The postmillennial school interprets the millennium to be a period (may be a distinct 1000 year period) of great spiritual blessing fulfilling millennial promises accomplished through preaching the gospel to everyone. -

Pagenkemper The first article in this two-part series looked at im- agery from Jesus' parables in the Synoptic Gospels that point to an eschatological rejection (thus the so-called "rejection" motif). Seven elements of imagery were examined: (1) "the furnace of fire," (2) the phrase "weeping and gnashing of teeth," (3) the im- agery of "outer darkness," (4) the motif of the shut door, (5) the phrase "I do not know you" (and its variations), (6) the verb dixo- tome<w, and (7) the nature of the rejection for those servants who did not invest their talents or minas. In each case the rejection signi- fied not simply a rejection from some of the privileges of the kingdom, but rather a complete rejection from the coming escha- tological kingdom. The ones rejected did not have any connec- tion with the salvation Jesus offered. This article discusses the criteria on which the eschatological judgments themselves are made. That is, what criteria did the master or king in each of these parables employ to determine ul- timate (i.e., eschatological) rejection or acceptance? Ice Pastor Oak Hill Bible Church, Austin, Texas Today Christians are witnessing "the most rapid cultural re alignment in history."1 One Christian writer describes the last 25 years as "The Great Rebellion," which has resulted in a whole new culture replacing the more traditional Christian-influenced Ameri can culture.2 Is the light flickering and about to go out? Is this a part of the further development of the apostasy that many premillenni- alists say is taught in the Bible? THEONOMY AND ESCHATOLOGY | Some Reflections On Postmillennialism By Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.1 Essential to the emergence of theonomy/(Christian) reconstructionism has been a revival of postmillennialism.2 Among current postmils, to be sure, there are some who are not recon- structionists, but all reconstructionists—whatever their differences—consider themselves post- mils. Or so it would have seemed until just recently with the unanticipated and apparently grow- ing impact of reconstructionist viewpoints in circles whose eschatology is characteristically premil. Still, for reconstructionism’s leading advocates, postmillennialism is plainly integral— whether logically or psychologically—to their position as a whole. Nonreconstructionist postmils would naturally deny any such connection. This chapter provides some partial, personally-tinged, yet, I hope, not entirely unhelpful reflections on the resurgent postmillennialism of the past 20-25 years. My reservations lie in at least four areas. DEFINING POSTMILLENNIALISM A large element of ambiguity cuts across much of today’s postmillennialism. Before trying to specify that ambiguity it will be helpful, historically, to give some attention to the fact that in the past, too, postmillennialism has not been the clearly defined, unambiguous position that some of its contemporary proponents make it out to be. It is fairly common to point out the inadequacy of our conventional designations pre, post, and a. But, no less commonly, in ensuing discussion that recognition recedes. As a result, efforts, for one, to distinguish between the postmil and amil positions get confused—usually, as it turns out, more than a merely terminological confusion. Who coined the term amillennial and when did it first begin to be used? Perhaps I’ve missed it somewhere, but the usual sources don’t seem to know or at least don’t say. -

Mervyn Maxwell in God Cares , vol. 2, the book of Revelation divides into two parts and within these each main section has a counterpart in the other half of the book. Responsible exegesis demands that in any given case the two sections be studied together. 1 One such pair of sections involves chaps. 12 and 17. It is important that we compare these two chapters, not only because of the overall structure of Revelation, but because they are linked by a very clear example of parallel symbolism. In Rev 12 and again in Rev 17 John sees a woman. A woman is commonly used as a symbol for God's people, or in this case the church. 2 The one woman, described in Rev 12:1, is pure: A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. (Rev 12:1) The other woman, described in Rev 17:3-6a, is corrupt: (3) Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. (4) The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. Hell: Never, Forever, Or Just for Awhile?

Mayhue Senior Vice President and Dean Professor of Theology and Pastoral Ministries The plethora of literature produced in the last two decades on the basic nature of hell indicates a growing debate in evangelicalism that has not been experienced since the latter half of the nineteenth century. This introductory article to the entire theme issue of TMSJ sets forth the context of the question of whether hell involves conscious torment forever in Gehenna for unbelievers or their annihilation after the final judgment. It discusses historical, philosophical, lexical, contextual, and theological issues that prove crucial to reaching a definitive biblical conclusion. In the end, hell is a conscious, personal torment forever; it is not “just for awhile” before annihilation after the final judgment (conditional immortality) nor is its final retribution “never” (universalism). * * * * * A few noted evangelicals such as Clark Pinnock,1 John Stott,2 and John Wenham3 have in recent years challenged the doctrine of eternal torment forever in hell as God’s final judgment on all unbelievers. James Hunter, in his landmark “sociological interpretation” of evangelicalism, notes that “. it is clear that there is a measurable degree of uneasiness within this generation of Evangelicals with the notion of an eternal damnation.”4 The 1989 evangelical doctrinal caucus “Evangelical Affirmations” surprisingly debated this issue. “Strong disagreements did surface over the position of annihilationism, a view that holds that unsaved souls 1Clark H. He is the central figure whose advent is expected in other religions as well." (Exposition of Divine Principle, Part I, Chapter 5: Resurrection, Section 3: The Unification of Religions) This passage is familiar to all Unificationists, and it is our understanding Sun Myung Moon is the fulfillment not only of the Second Coming of Christ but, together with his wife, Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon, fulfills the ultimate role of the True Parents of humankind. Thus, we easily recognize the Mahdi in this role of the awaited returning central figure in Islam whom we can see fulfilled in the True Parents. But what about Hinduism? If there is no corresponding central figure in Hinduism, with a billion adherents, how will all religions come together under one God, one True Parents? I knew little of Hinduism until recently, finding the many gods, some with the heads of animals or many arms, rather unattractive. On the other hand, the greeting "namaste," which a colleague at an interfaith gathering explained means "I bow to the divine in you," has a deep spirituality that impressed me and evoked my respect. When I reflected on it, I knew there must be common ground with the other religions, and this must include the expectation of a messianic figure to come, soon. -

Right now we are in the age known as “Kalki Yuga”. Kali Yuga lasts for 432,000 years. It is the age of quarrel and hypocrisy. Hypocrisy means saying one thing and doing another. Someone may say he is a very good person but he may lie, cheat and steal or be very cruel. That is hypocrisy and is very common in this age. Things gradually get worse and worse in Kali Yuga. People become smaller and weaker and do not live very long. Hardly anyone follows any religious principles. Almost all the kings will be thieves and most men will be violent and dishonest. The plants and trees will be very tiny and will not give much fruit. People will run away to live in the forests and will have to eat wild fruits, leaves, flesh, and roots. There will hardly be any rainfall. At this time, the end of Kali Yuga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear on the earth. He will come to rescue religion. As we are learning from the Bhagavad Gita verse, the Lord comes to save His devotees and to protect religious principles. In 427,000 years from now, He will come as Kalki Avatar. It is predicted in the scriptures that Lord Kalki will appear as the son of Vishnuyasa in the village called Sambhala. All the incarnations are mentioned in the scriptures so we know if they are real or not.
