ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES VERY GOOD
O Administrative utilities for the device include: Status Monitor, Command Center RX, KYOCERA Net Admin and KYOCERA Net Viewer.
KYOCERA Net Admin is a free network device management solution available for down- load from the KYOCERA website. The utility enables administrators to access and con- figure settings and features of their KYOCERA models and also monitor other compat- ible devices in the fleet. Administrators can access detailed information on the status and performance of individual devices, including the amount of toner available and usage logs.
Net Admin’s Multi-Set Template Editor allows administrators to clone settings and update firmware on multiple KYOCERA devices.
The utility’s Map View feature allows the creation of a visual representation of an organi- zation’s output fleet; each device has an icon which can be dragged and dropped on to a background map of the office. This enables faster and easier navigation for technical support.
KYOCERA Net Viewer enables the management of KYOCERA and compatible hardware on the network from one central administration point. Administrators can sort devices by name or IP address and select the information they need in order to track device performance (counter data, users, status feedback).
Administrators can create groups of products in KYOCERA Net Viewer based on differ- ent reporting or error notification criteria. Within a “report group” an administrator can receive reports via email outlining a variety of device statistics, including printed page volumes and consumable levels, at defined time intervals.
KYOCERA Command Center RX, the embedded Web server, allows administrators to easily change device settings, view status and monitor toner levels (on a sliding scale from 1 to 100%) and approximate paper supplies (empty, not empty, or 100%), among other things.

Consumable levels and device status can be viewed via KYOCERA’s Command Center RX.
Command Center RX enables administrators to send email alerts to three recipients notifying them of error conditions, including when there is a paper jam, when the cover is open and when the device runs out of toner or paper.
The Product Library CD includes a software utility, KYOCERA Net Direct Print, that enables direct printing of PDF, PostScript, PRN and KYOCERA’s PRESCRIBE files with- out having the respective applications installed on the PC. Multiple files can be sent to print in one go, with the user able to change settings such as quantity, duplexing, N-up printing and resolution.
O The ECOSYS FS-2100DN is supported by a free KYOCERA Mobile Print app, (available for iOS and compatible Android devices), which allows users to print and send files and images from their smartphone or tablet to selected KYOCERA document imaging devices in their network.
O In addition, although not tested with the device, the FS-2100DN model supports Air- Print wireless printing for iOS devices. AirPrint enables wireless print photos, emails and documents without the need to install device drivers (although the device may require a firmware update).
FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS VERY GOOD
O Status Monitor, the feedback utility, can appear as a desktop icon and provides pop-up messages to alert administrators to performance issues, including paper jam, cover open, paper/toner replenish, toner low and printing/print completed. Administrators have the ability to add a sound file to aid monitoring.

KYOCERA Net Admin provides real-time notification of up to 13 error conditions via email. An unlimited number of email addresses are supported for each alert, and admin- istrators can direct notifications to go to different recipients. For example, alerts about network/communications errors could be sent to IT or help desk staff, low-toner, low- paper or open-cover notices could be sent to administrative staff, and service-level error messages could be sent directly to an outside dealer.
Command Center RX provides detailed information to users regarding the ECOSYS FS-2100DN, including device status, paper size and remaining paper and black toner levels, which are represented by an approximate-percent gauge.
EASE OF NETWORK SETUP GOOD
O Physical setup of the unit is straightforward. Due to its size and weight, KYOCERA rec- ommends that two people lift the unit out of the box and place it in the desired location. Packaging materials aren’t excessive.
The starter cartridge (rated yield, 6,000 pages) is preinstalled and doesn’t require any protective seals to be removed.
O Drivers were downloaded from KYOCERA’s website, however they were easily installed using Windows Add a Printer wizard.
The Product Library CD supplied with the ECOSYS FS-2100DN includes a software util- ity, KYOCERA Net Direct Print, that enables direct printing of PDF, PostScript, PRN and KYOCERA’s PRESCRIBE files without having the respective applications installed on the PC.
One-to-one and one-to-many cloning, which greatly simplifies setup in larger environ- ments, is achieved through Net Admin’s Multi-Set Template Editor, but is limited to KYOCERA devices.
PRINT DRIVERS EXCELLENT
O The unit ships with KYOCERA’s KX 6.0 driver, which is compatible with various Win- dows operating systems, as well as Mac OS X 10.2+. Other supported platforms include UNIX and Linux. The driver combines PCL XL (PCL 6 emulation), PCL 5e and KPDL (KYOCERA’s Postscript emulation) in one, which uses fewer network resources.

The KX 6.0 PCL XL driver has a clear and intuitive layout which makes navigation easy. All features can be accessed via the left-hand menu from the driver’s home screen.
The driver interface is very user-friendly, and the combination of text and graphics aids usability. All driver options are integrated into one window requiring fewer user clicks to access printing options, and the main menu is well organized and lists section labels with further subsection labels to provide clearer signposting to users. The bottom panel displays all the settings as shown in earlier versions of the KX driver; a ‘Print Preview’ check box enables users to preview documents prior to printing, while the ‘Save As’ and ‘View Profiles’ buttons allow users to manage a set of profiles saved with their preferred settings.
O Users can click on the question mark button located on the top menu bar, or hover over a term anywhere within the screen window, to access the help section of the KX 6.0 driver.

KYOCERA’s KPDL (PostScript) and PCL XL drivers have an identical interface, and users can now switch between PDLs from the Printing Preferences dialog box.
Unlike previous versions of the KX driver, KX driver 6.0 now enables users to configure settings from the Printing Preferences dialog box with a new clickable button that opens up the PDL Settings dialog box and displays the current user-selected setting: KPDL, PCL XL, PCL 5c or PDF. UI settings that were previously hidden such as the Security Watermark button are now shown but disabled if they are not supported by the PDL cur- rently selected. Note that on client PCs in a client-server environment, users with admin- istrative privileges can change the PDL from the Properties > Device Settings menu.
File size is not affected when printing multiple sets, regardless of whether ‘Collate’ is selected from the properties screen of the driver or from the print screen within an appli- cation.
Toner-save mode helps extend the life of the cartridge and can contribute to a lower TCO.
The PCL XL and KPDL drivers feature PRESCRIBE, KYOCERA’s page design and con- trol language, which lets users create graphics, logos and forms, including multi-part forms, independently of the system and then save and update them on the unit.

Characters were fully formed with average darkness, and sharpness and smoothness of curves/serifs was rated as above average. Some haloing and toner overspray was vis- ible, but only under magnification.
Closely spaced fine lines remained distinct, and lines were of a consistent thickness. Circles were full formed, while diagonal lines showed no evidence of breakup or stair- stepping. Some haloing was visible, but only when line art was viewed under magnifica- tion.
— Halftones were visible for most of the range, but there was no distinction between 90% and 100% levels.

The control panel consists of several hard keys, an alphanumeric keyboard and a five-line LCD display. BLI analysts found the menu’s navigation settings to be more intuitive and user-friendly than with many other devices in this class.

Replacing the toner is extremely simple: turn the blue toner lever down and lift and remove the used cartridge in one clean movement. The waste toner bottle (supplied with each box of toner) is located in a side panel (an unusual feature in most small printers) and is easy to replace. If it is not replaced at the same time as the toner, the device will alert the user when the waste bottle is full.
O The drum unit is not user replaceable and would require a service call. However, KYOCERA employs long-life drums, thus minimising the need to replace the drum unit.
O KYOCERA recommends cleaning the unit’s interior each time the cartridge and waste toner bottle are replaced.
Fully-adjustable paper guides allow the user to slide the length and width guides in sync to accommodate different-sized paper. A dial located on the right hand side of the tray enables users to select a particular paper format, rather than select it at the control panel or at the workstation, and the control panel display updates automatically when it detects the new format.
To load the cassette is a quick and simple operation: insert one ream of paper and tuck under the guides. Push down on the spring-loaded tray, and slide and close the drawer.

O Clearing misfeeds should be a simple matter as they can be easily accessed either from the front or from the rear panel door. The LCD panel will trigger a flashing red light to signal there is an issue, and will indicate the location of the jam. There is a help button which brings up instructions to aid the user with resolving the jam.
— If the unit is positioned against a wall or partition and a misfeed happens in the rear access area, users will have to turn the unit around to clear it, which could be cumber- some.
FEATURE SET GOOD
O Standard (600 sheets) and maximum (2,600 sheets) paper capacities are competitive for laser models in this class. The bypass, which has a competitive capacity of 100 sheets, is included in these figures.
Media-handling abilities from the drawers (up to 120 gsm) and bypass (up to 220 gsm) are competitive and above average for this group, respectively.

Standard (256 MB) RAM is competitive, while the maximum (1.25 GB) memory capacity is among the highest, compared with similar A4 mono laser printers in this class.

Users can also set up print profiles as a time- saving measure, further simplifying the submission process. This is ideal for users oper- ating the device as a short run, print on demand resource.
EcoPrint mode reduces toner consumption and can help to reduce waste.

SUPPORTING TEST DATA
Test Environment: Testing was conducted in an environment monitored daily by Extech RH520 Seven-Day Temperature/ Humidity Chart Recorder, in Buyers Lab’s test facility at Unit 1 Station Industrial Estate, Wokingham, Berkshire RG41 2YQ. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from affecting equipment under test.
Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2008 servers, Windows 7 workstations, 10BaseT/100/1000 BaseTX network switches and CAT5e/6 cabling.
Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, three weeks of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at half of its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume. BLI’s daily test usage is designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday, and as such includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day.

Test Procedures: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, including a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation, gamut size and stability are tested using a 1,400 colour test target, which is read using an EFI ES-1000 colour spectrophotometer and assessed using Chromix ColorThink Pro v3.0 software. In addition, density of black and colour output is measured using an X-Rite 508 Densitometer.
