The Legg Mason Tennis Classic, the preeminent annual sporting event in the nation’s capital, will take place August 1st-9th at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Washington DC and will be televised live on both the Tennis Channel and ESPN2 as part of the prestigious US Open Series. Measurements of the horizontal coefficient of restitution for a superball and a tennis ball Rod Crossa) Physics Department, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW 2006 Australia ͑Received 9 July 2001; accepted 20 December 2001͒ When a ball is incident obliquely on a flat surface, the rebound spin, speed, and angle generally differ from the corresponding incident values. Measurements of all three quantities were made using a digital video camera to film the bounce of a tennis ball incident with zero spin at various angles on several different surfaces. The maximum spin rate of a spherical ball is determined by the condition that the ball commences to roll at the end of the impact. Under some conditions, the ball was found to spin faster than this limit. This result can be explained if the ball or the surface stores energy elastically due to deformation in a direction parallel to the surface. The latter effect was investigated by comparing the bounce of a tennis ball with that of a superball. Ideally, the coefficient of restitution ͑COR͒ of a superball is 1.0 in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The COR for the superball studied was found to be 0.76 in the horizontal direction, and the corresponding COR for a tennis ball was found to vary from Ϫ0.51 to ϩ0.24 depending on the incident angle and the coefficient of sliding friction. © 2002 American Association of Physics Teachers. ͓DOI: 10.1119/1.1450571͔ I. Seeding/Tournament Entry 1. This is an open tournament in which any MIAA school can opt-in. The opt-in deadline is June 2, 2021. 2. All teams will be seeded by winning percentage. 3. COVID-19 Tennis Modifications 4. MIAA COVID Task Force Information 5. The following tie breaking procedure shall be used: a. Head to Head Competition b. Winning Percentage against Common Opponent c. League Champion d. Coin Flip In a tie breaker for tournament seeding, every game played including exclusion games, but excluding endowment games are counted. Note: If a tie involves multiple teams (more than 2) and a team is eliminated, the procedure starts over at step one with the remaining teams. B. Pairing Announcements/Scheduling 1. Pairings and tournament information will be available on the MIAA website, www.miaa.net, throughout the tournament. 2. The number of and equity in “rest” days is not a tournament scheduling criteria. C. Site Determination and Tournament Sites 1. All matches throughout the tournament will be hosted by the higher seeded team, providing the site meets suitable quality standards. The tie-breaking procedure above, will be used to determine the host, if in the state tournament, teams seeded the same will be playing each other. If the higher seed cannot host, the TMC Site Determination Policy will be used: • Home school AD finds an acceptable site • Lower seed will host the match • If both sites are not acceptable, the Tournament Director will place the match at an acceptable site within MIAA site policy guidelines.

(February 14, 2008) - The World TeamTennis Pro League today announced the League has added a franchise in Washington, D.C. The Washington Kastles, owned by a group led by venture capitalist and entrepreneur Mark Ein, will play their home matches at a Washington, D.C., location soon to be announced. The 2008 WTT regular season runs July 3-23 with the WTT Championship Weekend set for July 24-27 in Roseville, Calif. World TeamTennis, co-founded in 1974 by tennis legend Billie Jean King, features several generations of tennis pros competing in a co-ed pro league in communities throughout the U.S. each summer. This is the first Washington, D.C.-based team in the League’s 33-year history. “Washington D.C. is a world-class sports market that will be a showcase for World TeamTennis,” said WTT CEO/Commissioner Ilana Kloss. “We’ve looked at this market for several years as a great location for expansion. Thanks to the leadership and vision of Mark Ein, everything came together for it to happen this year.” “Area fans have supported tennis for many years and we think they will really embrace our unique brand of tennis,” added Kloss.
