APLA Health is proud to provide you with this voting guide on the issues and races that will have the greatest impact on HIV policy, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, and other underserved communities. The APLA Health voting guide focuses most closely on how candidates performed or are likely to perform on issues relating to health care, including the Affordable Care Act, Medicare and Medicaid, and other programs that impact the populations we serve. We also provide summaries of selected statewide and local initiatives that may affect these populations. Voting is one the most important rights we have in a democracy and it is important to make your voice heard to influence the policy decisions that will affect your daily life. Whatever you do, and however you have to do it, get out and vote! If work is a barrier to your ability to vote, remember that California law requires your employer to allow you to take up to two hours off to vote, without losing any pay. View this voting rights notice for more information. Check List for the Mid-Term Elections: If you have not registered to vote or have recently moved to a new address, make sure to register to vote! October 19, 2020 The Honorable Gavin Newsom Governor, State of California State Capitol, First Floor Sacramento, CA 95814 Dear Governor Newsom, In February 2004, you made international headlines for your decision to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This thrillingly bold move — just one month into your first term as Mayor of San Francisco — could have derailed your political career. Instead, it cemented your legacy as a civil rights champion and ignited the dreams of millions of LGBTQ+ people around the world who had never before dared to imagine a city that would legalize their relationships. With the potential opening of California’s second United States Senate seat, an opportunity to make another historic decision now lies before you. Appointing an openly LGBTQ+ person to the U.S. Senate — just the third in the nation’s history — would send a powerful message about the Golden State’s leadership and values to the rest of the nation. Indeed, given that California is the fifth largest economy in the world, such a choice would be globally portentous and serve as a powerful rebuke to leaders around the world who actively undermine human rights. Indeed, even in our high-equality state, there is LGBTQ+ under-representation at all levels of government — Equality California polling has found 12% of California voters identify as LGBTQ+, but only three of 40 state senators are openly LGBTQ+, and just four of 80 members of the Assembly are openly LGBTQ+. A 2015 report issued by the Williams Institute found that less than 1% appointed seats at state agencies, boards and commissions were held by openly LGBTQ+ people at that time. -

Even more than usual, voters may discover that their voting location changed for this Consolidated General Election. The Department needed to adjust the boundary lines for a large number of precincts in response to adjustments made to the supervisory district lines. To confirm your voting location, look on the back page of this voter guide. You will find the address and precinct number for your polling place. If you have any questions, you can call the Department of Elections' voter informa- tion phone bank at 554-4375 and one of our staff will tell you the location of your polling place.
