Welcome to “PASS IT ON…” Wellington Rugby Leagues enewsletter for 2010.

The idea of “PASS IT ON…” is that you do just that and forward it to as many people as you can, who then forward it to as many people as they can. The more people we can tell about the World of Wellington the better!!!

Message from Dingo

What a feast of league we have on tonight. Kicking things off locally we have the Premier double header at Porirua Park. St George Dragons looking for their first win take on the Upper Hutt Tigers at 6pm and in the main game at 7.30pm it is the reigning premiers, Porirua Vikings looking to continue their winning ways against the Petone Panthers who will have enjoyed last weekend’s break after 2 losses. We had a huge crowd there 2 weeks ago so get out and support our local clubs before you settle down to watch the test match.

Kangaroos or Kiwis who will it be? At the risk of ending up with egg on my face I am predicting a Kiwi win by 8 points in tonight’s Match! Everything points to a big win for the Kangaroos-$6 million worth of talent against the Kiwis $3.5 million, a long history of winning this one off test, Kiwis hit hard by injuries. All the ingredients for a classic Kiwi underdog victory. Whoever wins let’s just hope for a great contest for our game at a great new venue.

Plenty of interesting pieces in this week’s Pass It On from a profile on Petone Panthers head coach Trevor Clark through to a piece on rugby league history compliments of Bernie Wood. We take a look at Wellingtonion's in the NRL with an update on and there are plenty of opportunities to win some fantastic prizes by supporting our clubs and purchasing a raffle ticket, details inside.

Earlier this week i was advised that a number of our clubs have had such great success with their junior numbers that some teams have had to split to form 2 teams in a grade. Great to see and encouraging for all.

It’s great to see new businesses coming on board supporting and Pass It On. Tradestaff started last week and Bob Bell from the Professionals has joined us this week. Our distribution list is already at over 500 strong and that’s even before everyone “Passes it on!!” The NZ Police have also come on board as sponsors of the NZ Secondary Schools Nationals with full details to follow next week.

Finally, just a reminder as you sit and watch the sell out crowd for tonight’s test match that we are holding an open forum brainstorming session from 7pm on Monday 17th May at Pelorus Trust Sports House, Hutt Park, Lower Hutt to gather ideas around the October 23 Test Match in Wellington. We need your ideas and help to make sure we fill the stadium and show the world that Wellington should host more of these big league events. Just email me to confirm your attendance.

Let’s get out there and support our game in a positive fashion this weekend.

PROFILE ON TREVOR CLARK With a Masters Degree in Sport & Exercise Science and a current PhD Candidate at Massey University Trevor is a man that is extremely qualified for Rugby League! Trevor is currently coaching the Petone Panthers who are positioned in 4th place, they have the chance to move up to 3rd place if they can topple top of the table Porirua on Friday night. Current Occupation: Senior Tutor, Massey University Coaching History: 1997-2010  Head Coach Wellington U20 Rugby League, NZ 2010  Head Coach Petone Panthers, NZ 2009/2010  Head Coach Wellington Premier Rugby League, NZ 2009  Head Coach Erina Eagles Jim Beam Cup, NSW 2004  Head Coach Windsor Wolves Jim Beam Cup, NSW 2003  Head Coach , NZ 2001-2002  Assistant Coach/Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, NZ Warriors 1998-2000  Coach NZ Students 1997-2000 World Cup Winners 1999 (UK) Playing career: 1983-1995 Professional Rugby League Player, England  Bradford Northern 1992-1995 (84 games)  Featherstone Rovers 1988-1992 (125 games)  Leeds Rugby League 1983-1988 (58 games) Trevor Clark  64 tries Featherstone Rovers 1990 What was your most memorable moment in Rugby League and why: Being selected in the NZ Maori Rugby League team in 1983 to tour the United Kingdom. That was the catalyst for my professional career. What motivates you to coach Rugby League: Love of the game. What do you see the biggest challenge is for the growth of Rugby League in Wellington? Tradition, bureaucracy, apathy…..the list is quite extensive, however, it often boils down to money and lack of it, in rugby leagues case. There has been very little development of the game (coaching & recruitment) in Wellington ever since funding was cut and the league went into administration a few years back….not a good image to portray to the public. This game survives purely on the willingness of parents of children who previously played the game and love the game. We need to grow our children & youth grades to ensure it has a strong future….. What is your opinion on the salary cap in the NRL? That’s for administrators to consider. Coaches’ coach footy teams….that’s their job. My opinion to administrators would be to follow the rules in place, or suffer the consequences. What advice would you give to an aspiring player in Wellington? Train hard, live a healthy lifestyle and continually learn the game through quality practice and good coaching.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE WRL REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION Remember MOUTHGUARDS are compulsory! You will not be allowed to take the field if you don’t have a mouth guard! They help protect a player from serious teeth and mouth damage and reduce the potential for concussion and they are compulsory for every player both junior and senior!

PLAYER SAFETY IS EVERYONES FIRST PRIORITY!

WELLINGTONIANS IN THE NRL… MOSE MASOE…

Mose Masoe a gentle Giant (except when on the football field) was signed by the straight from Naenae College on a deal reportly worth over $100 000 after being seen playing for the Wellington Orca’s as an 17 year in the Bartercard Cup. Mose at the time was dubbed the next “Willie Mason” by Orcas Coach Paul Bergman. His physical attributes alone are phenomenal: he stands 1.94m and tips the scales at 119kg, making him potentially one of the biggest players in the NRL.

Excerpts from www.stuff.co.nz/sport/167642 Jan 2008 SO WHERE IS MOSE NOW… After a successful first season in 2008 with the Roosters Under 20’s Mose spent all of 2009 on the sidelines after a knee reconstruction. He must have made a great impression the previous year as he signed another 3 year deal. 2010 is proving to be a challenge for Mose as he is too old now for the U20’s and has yet to make his first Grade Debut. He is spending his time playing for Roosters feeder club the , Pat Knox was at his latest game and had the following report… NEWTOWN JETS v CANTERBURY BANKSTOWN BULLDOGS… by Pat Knox In a typical top of the New South Wales Cup clash, title favourites Newtown Jets just held on to beat last seasons champions, Bankstown by 14-12 at Henson Park on Saturday. The huge Jets forward pack were lead up from by front rowers Charlie Leano and Mose Masoe.

The Jets had a 96% completion rate in the first half which gave them a 14 nil lead at halftime. But two late converted tries to the Dogs, a few stoushs in the final quarter, saw the Jets defending their line grimly. Poor discipline and penalties crept into the second half and a number of players wearing head bandages. Newtwon coach Greg Matterson singled out our own Mose Masoe as " the giant prop who had his best ever game in Jets colours to date and was deservedly given Man of the Match"

Mose still had time to get a photo taken with the 3 Randwick Junior Roosters (Levi, Katoa and Knox) before heading under the grandstand displaying a big hunk of flesh hanging from his face after being felled minutes before the final whistle, which started yet another all in brawl.

Accompanied by his lovely wife and young toddler, Mose is currently in that 'awkward' position that the NRL have yet to rectify of where former Toyota Cup players must go before being lost to the NRL.

BLAST FROM THE PAST – ARTICLE TWO…By Bernie Wood RUGBY LEAGUE ON ATHLETIC PARK

Had All Golds organiser, Wellingtonian, Albert Henry Baskerville, not been stricken down with pneumonia and as a result died on 20 May, 1908, in Brisbane, at the age of 25 years, Athletic Park may well have become the home of rugby league in Wellington. It is a recorded fact that Baskerville had opened negotiations to take a long lease of Athletic Park, which at the time in 1908 had been vacated by the Wellington Rugby Union in favour of a sports complex in Miramar.

With Athletic Park vacant the first game of rugby league in New Zealand, a benefit match for Baskerville's widowed mother, was played at Athletic Park on 13 June, 1908, between teams comprising the returned All Golds and other prominent rugby union players.

A second rugby league game, a test match between the Kiwis and Kangaroos, was played at Athletic Park 82 years later on Sunday, 19 August 1990. It was a double-header rugby weekend to celebrate New Zealand's 150 years as a nation with the All Blacks playing the Wallabies on the Saturday. The Australians won both games with the Kangaroos prevailing 24-8 before a crowd of 27,000 on a cold, wet miserable day.

Upper Hutt fullback, Morvin Edwards, played on the wing with Matthew Ridge at fullback. Wellington and Upper Hutt club Kiwi, Morvin Edwards in heavy traffic For Kiwis captain, Hugh McGahan it was the against the Kangaroos at Athletic Park in 1990 before 27,000 spectators. last of his 32 test.
