Such threats are by no means new, however; I am reminded of the rhetorical question posed by the Greek historian Herodotus 25 centuries ago, when dis- cussing a River Nile insufficiently high to flood fields: “What will be left for the Egyptians who live there but starva- tion?” It is indeed fortunate that we are now at a technological stage where some solutions can help meet the much-increased water needs in this part of the world.
