Dear Summit Attendee, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Jacksonville for the 2017 Summit. This year’s Summit is filled to the brim with engaging sessions, fascinating technical demonstrations, and encouraging learning opportunities from many of the top names in nature photography. Our dedicated team has worked very hard to develop a program that will leave you feeling both inspired and more connected to the natural world.

If you’ve never attended a Nature Photography Summit before you’re in for a special experience. Not only will you learn more about the craft of nature photography, but you’ll also have a chance to connect with fellow . I attended my first summit many years ago, and some of my closest friends—now more like extended family—came as a result of that first event. And be sure to hang out between and after the sessions! Some of my most cherished summit experiences have come from informal gatherings with other attendees.

Have a great time these next few days! Please be sure to introduce yourself to me, or one of our board members (we have badges). We’d love to meet you.

Clay Bolt, NANPA President

1 20TH NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY SUMMIT WELCOME!

You have made a wonderful decision to attend the Nature Photography Summit. There is no other venue where you can hear programs from the best nature photographers in the country. The people on the program are not just the best photographers, but also the best speakers and teachers.

I am honored that NANPA tapped me to coordinate the program for this Summit. Nearly 100 people submitted proposals to present a keynote, breakout, or super session. It was a pleasure to read each proposal, review websites, and determine speaking styles. Our team then went through the entire list to design the program you’ll experience this week.

Designing a Summit program is a bit like composing a . In a photo, a dynamic splash of has to be complimented by earthy undertone and held together with supporting elements. The same goes for our program. We have the biggest names in the nature photography world along with new up-and-coming talent. We offer breakout sessions for novice photographers as well as the seasoned professional. There are programs loaded with technical material and those designed to simply inspire. Topics range from conservation to weather to keywording to flying drones.

A lot of time, effort, and thought went into the program. I hope you are inspired, enlightened, educated, and entertained. All of us involved understand that this week is an investment so we want you to get your money’s worth and much more.

Thanks for attending, and I hope you enjoy the program we’ve designed for you.

Kathy Adams Clark 2017 Summit Program Chair

Joe and Mary Ann McDonald Both Joe and Mary Ann love to photograph the big cats, The Tale of Seven Tails: especially Joe. It became his obsession for the pair to Photographing the Seven Big photograph the seven big cats of the world, including lions, Cats of the World cheetahs, leopards, pumas, jaguars, tigers and snow leopards. To make it more fun, the couple decided to do this in Thursday, March 2 a one-year time span. They achieved their goal from mid-2012 7:30pm – 8:30pm to mid-2013. From the southern part of Chile to the Pantanal of Brazil, from East Africa through the Indian continent and northward into the Himalayas, the pair hiked, sweated, lived in tents at -25C and got jostled in Jeeps over rocky roads to photograph these beautiful big cats. In 2016 they even added another subspecies to the list: the Asiatic lion. Join Joe and Mary Ann as they share the adventures while chasing their dream in the wild and wacky world of photography.

Christian Ziegler – Outstanding of the Year Jungle Spirits: Celebrating Tropical Biodiversity Friday, March 3 8:15am – 9:15am National Geographic photographer and tropical ecologist Christian Ziegler takes us on a fascinating journey through tropical rainforests around the world, sharing images and experiences from some of his projects. He will begin at a flowering balsa tree in his chosen home, Panama, where he spent months on a scaffold he erected in the rainforest to document the diverse wildlife. We then will hear about his adventures in the Congo basin while taking images of our closest relatives, the bonobos, for the first time in the wild. Farther to the East, we will hear about threatened chameleons on the island of Madagascar and exciting recent discoveries in the world of carnivorous plants. We also will share the long process of his photographing one of the biggest, and yet most elusive and highly endangered birds on the planet, the southern cassowary, in the forests of tropical Queensland. With his photography Christian wants to excite you about the wonders of the natural world and highlight the urgent need for effective conservation.

3 Keynote Presentations

Art Wolfe Earth Is My Witness Friday, March 3 7:15pm – 8:15pm presents an encyclopedic selection of his photography along with intimate stories about his encounters that exemplify his boundless curiosity about the world. From the rich sights and smells of the Pushkar Camel Fair to the moment when a polar bear and her cubs leave their Arctic den, these images represent what Art Wolfe has lived for: the instants when circumstance, light, and subject miraculously collide to form an iconic photograph. Together, these images and the stories behind them explore the delicate interconnectivity of life across our planet. Setting the stage for this fascinating journey is award-winning author and former National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence Wade Davis. Together, Davis and Wolfe present a world that borders on the fantastic but is all the more precious for its fragility. At the heart of Wolfe’s work is the appeal for environmental, cultural, and wildlife preservation, which he makes with beautiful, far-reaching precision in this definitive opus. Uniquely conceived and undeniably breathtaking, Earth Is My Witness is an elegantly crafted masterpiece that will inspire awe, hope, and appreciation for the world we live in.

John Nuhn – Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient A Personal Perspective on Nature Photography Saturday, March 4 8:45am – 9:45am In the more than 50 years John Nuhn has served the publishing and photography industry, he has seen changes in how photography is made, marketed, published and viewed. But even as photographers and editors have embraced new technologies and faced new realities, the fundamentals that make a great image have remained the same. Join him as he merges the growth of his own career with the transformations that have influenced nature images, the photographers who make them and the people who use them, along with what he believes the future holds.

Jack Dykinga – Not many people have a second chance at life. I received the gift Lifetime Achievement of a double lung transplant that brought me back from a near- Award Recipient death experience. This life-changing experience afforded me the The Achievement of opportunity to reexamine my life. I realized that virtual armies of Many healthcare professionals were all invested in keeping me alive each day. I expanded that realization and discovered that my Saturday, March 4 entire life has been punctuated with “ah ha” moments where 8:15pm – 9:15pm various mentors and muses changed my life direction. I’ll showcase certain individuals and their influence. I’ve come to realize, “It takes a village to raise a photographer,” and I feel a tremendous sense of gratitude to so many. From my days at the Chicago Sun-Times, where I was fortunate enough to win a Pulitzer Prize for , to the vast empty deserts I roam today, I’ll share images and lessons learned along the way. While subjects and equipment are always changing, style, ethics and feelings remain constant. It’s the bedrock founda- tion my life mentors gave me. I am indeed incredibly lucky.

36 20TH NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY SUMMIT The NANPA Foundation exists to advance awareness and appreciation of nature through photography. We do this by raising funds and providing resources to support education, conservation, photographic opportunities, advocacy and ethical practices in nature photography. The NANPA Foundation is a charitable organization, separate from NANPA, that supports NANPA’s ongoing educational programs and provides scholarships for high school- and college-level nature photographers. The Foundation also supports the building and maintenance of photo blinds in natural areas. We award the Philip Hyde and Janie Moore Greene grants annually that help fund higher education and photography projects with conservation goals. Donations to the NANPA Foundation are tax deductible. We appreciate the gifts that we have received over the past year from the following:
