    T H E FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION THE SIXTY SEVENTH STUDENT SENATE Resolution39 Sponsored by: Senators Doyle, Whitmire, Galant, and Lusaka WHEREAS: HS 4001 was filed in the Florida House by Representative Stebue and SB 68 was filed in the Florida Senate by Senator Evers, and WHEREAS: HS 4001 passed the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee on September 16, and WHEREAS: SB 68 passed the Senate Criminal Justice Committee on September 16, and WHEREAS: The Florida State University fosters a safe learning environment for more than 41,000 students, and WHEREAS: The Student Government Association of Florida State University strives to enhance the health and quality of life of the students of Florida State University, and WHEREAS: Concealed carrying of firearms on campus premises would provide an enhanced and unnecessary risk to the student body, thereby negatively impact the quality of life of the student body, and WHEREAS: The Florida State University Student Government, in representing the Student Body stands in strong opposition to any and all propositions that would allow concealed carry on college campuses, therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SIXTY SEVENTH STUDENT SENATE AT THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY THAT: The Florida State University Student Senate opposes HS 4001 and SB 68 and further urges the Florida Legislature to reject this bill.     Message from the President Bill Galvano President of the Senate Welcome to the Florida Senate. We are so pleased you have taken time to experience a part of Florida’s past, present, and future by walking the halls and chambers where citizen-legislators have gathered for generations. The Florida Senate is comprised of independently elected women and men of differing walks of life, family backgrounds, and communities of faith. Each Senator comes to Tallahassee carrying the dreams, hopes, goals, and desires of over half a million Floridians. The microphones on our desks amplify not only our voices, but the 20 million Floridians we collectively represent. Only by working together can we effectively and efficiently do the job the people of Florida expect and deserve. During the 2018-2020 Legislative Term, we have much to focus on in both the short and long term; however, I am very optimistic. I have confidence in our forty Senators and faith in the great State of Florida. We have an amazing history from which to draw guidance, wonderful people to inspire us, and an endless palette to create the future. This action followed your deployment of local and state law enforcement agency resources to “the center of Florida’s prescription drug battlefield” as part of a multi-pronged attack on the prescription drug abuse and pill mill proliferation. This letter is to request that you issue a similar order urgently needed to address the growing threat and rising body count arising from Florida’s opioid-addiction crisis. No longer confined to small urban enclaves, heroin and fentanyl have become the scourge of communities throughout Florida, wreaking widespread devastation not only from the ravages of addiction, but the resurgence of deadly diseases associated with drug abuse. There is no family, no race, no ethnicity, no income level this epidemic cannot touch, and no effective state bulwark in place to stop it. The numbers are staggering. According to recent news reports, numbers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement show a nearly 80 percent increase in heroin deaths and 77 percent increase in fentanyl deaths in Florida from 2014 to 2015.
