Enter Menu and click “upgrade” this will show you the different options with Pro and Business, choose the one which best suits your business. JimdoPro & Business Signing up for Jimdo Pro means that your website is hosted on your own domain, and you get access to greater functionality, a massive choice of templates, hosting, domain registrations and a custom email address. Business provides more templates, greater SEO functionality, unlimited store items and 20 email addresses. http://bit.ly/JimdoWebsites Register the domain that the site will be hosted on: PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK, TRIPLE CHECK AND GET SOMEONE ELSE TO CHECK THE SPELLING OF YOUR DOMAIN- you won’t be able to change it afterwards without registering (& paying for) a new domain!! What is a domain? A domain, or domain name, is the text that your customers use to access your website. It links to the actual address of the web server that your website is hosted on which is a string of numbers called an IP address. Domains are usually made up of two parts; the domain extension, is the last part of domain for example „.com‟, „.net‟ or „.co.uk‟. The SLD is the part that you choose so for our website the SLD is „Success-Matters‟. Your domain should be registered as a co.uk if your business is primarily based in the UK, because this is better for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation-getting your website found by people who are searching using search engines such as Google and Bing). If people in the UK are searching for you and your domain is co.uk , Google sees your website as more relevant over .com, because it‟s in the geographical region of the person searching). Website Workshop by 1 It is recommended to also register the .com domain, to protect it from other people using it and detracting from your own online marketing. You can also (and it is recommended) register your domain name using different domain extension such as: .tv .biz .org .uk .co .me, etc etc. (You can do this through a domain registrar, I recommend http://bit.ly/123RegDomains they are UK based and I‟ve never had any problems with them since starting to use them in 2010, and the prices are reasonable. (I don‟t recommend using GoDaddy, based on the fact that their CEO posted a video of him shooting and killing elephants for fun). Register for JimdoPro (£60 per year including VAT), which equates to £5 per month and is very much a bargain! It includes everything you need: The Design Templates, CMS, Hosting & Domain Registration. The Hosting All information on websites needs to be “stored” somewhere, this is done on a server, the server provider is called a “Host” as it hosts your information so people can access it by going to your web address using a browser. You have to have a system to “hold” and display the information (your design template) and a host to store the template & content so people can access them. Hosting prices vary but a good deal is £10 per month, with Jimdo Pro you get this automatically included in your £60 per year. Domain Registration This is the address which people can find your website. You need to register your own domain to ensure that you are the legal owner of your website address. This is very important, if you don‟t have ownership yourself it can often cause problems later when web developers are no longer in contact with clients they‟ve registered domains for! When you register for Jimdo Pro you get one domain registration included, so they act as a domain registrar for you. Jimdo Pro also includes an email address on the same domain you have registered with Jimdo Pro, (and this also includes the hosting of each). You can can access your email address online through Jimdo‟s webmail system, or you can view them via Outlook/on your smart phone etc. This means you‟ll always have a back up of your emails. The domain registrar (Such as 123-Reg registers you as the owner of the domain with Nominet http://www.nominet.org.uk/ you need to provide up to date contact information and for some Website Workshop by 2 domains (such as .ie) you need to prove that you operate/have a business registered in that country before you are permitted to own a domain in that country. Email addresses: You have one email address with JimdoPro, which includes hosting and accessing them on webmail system. I recommend having a general email address which you can make publicly available, avoid using email addresses such as [email protected] because these type email addressses are often flagged as spam, or not permitted to be used on certain online tools. I use [email protected] as my general, first point of contact email address, and one my VA (virtual assistant) has access to. You can have emails sent to this email address forwarded to your existing email account, or you can set it up so you can access them directly on your phone/laptop/tablet. Google Analytics You need to create a Google analytics account, and get the code from Analytics to put onto your site before Google can track the visitors. Once you‟ve copied the HTML code from Google Analytics, go to your Website > Settings > Edit Head paste the code into the Edit Head section and click save. You should be able to see your analytics within 24 hours, or often sooner. Google Alerts http://bit.ly/Googlealerts Set up an alert for search terms such as your own name (if it‟s not too common) your business name, and topics which are of interest to your customers- you can join the conversation if people are talking about your business, and if there are topics of interest in the news this might be a good topic for a blog post, if it‟s “in the news” people are searching for it, and this can lead people to find your business if they‟re searching for these topics. Dropbox Connect your dropbox account with Jimdo allows you to upload files from dropbox straight into your website. Website Workshop by 3 To get your free dropbox account, for storing files online (makes it easy to share large image files & shared documents) http://bit.ly/DropboxFileSpace Favicon Create a small image (ideally of your logo) which is 32 x 32 pixels and upload as Favicon (icon that shows on top of the tab on your browser- this reminds people which site it is, and makes it look professional). You can edit your own images using PhotoShop, or Software such as Microsoft Paint (Which is usually free on a Windows PC). We created a temporary one for you which is the Success Matters logo, replace this with your own image before you announce your new website. YouTube: Set up a YouTube account, make sure the Channel name is consistent with how you want your business to be known, and is connected to your Google account (You should be able to sign in using your Gmail account if you already have one). Videos: Get yourself filmed, film your business, products, services, film customers, upload these to your YouTube channel, and embed these videos into your website (using the video element). use cuttings of existing performances (even if old, if they‟re good quality) a video only needs to be a few minutes long, but needs to show that you can make people laugh. Camtasia is a good software system which you can download for free (for a limited period) to edit videos. Alternatively you can use a good voice recorder such as Zoom and use still images to create a “video” if you haven‟t got any video of your business. This is a good option for products, you can use a slideshow of photos of the products with a voice-over explaining features and benefits. Hide Login to your website Once you‟ve done the major work and you‟re ready to let the public come in and look around. Website Workshop by 4 Remember that the login will be your website plus forward slash login www.makeyourownwebsites.jimdo.com/login Profile Picture on Jimdo Upload a profile picture of yourself, this is used when you are posting on the Jimdo help forum, and can help other Jimdo users connect with you better (People like being able to see a face to the person they are speaking with). Use the same one that you use on your Facebook & Twitter (these should be the same to provide consistency of visual image of you across all platforms). Jimdo Facebook Group Support: Jimdo run a group on Fb providing support for Jimdo users, often other users can answer your questions quicker than waiting for email responses. (Jimdo Pro users get responses within 1-2 working days, Business users within 2 hours same working day). http://bit.ly/JimdoFbGrp Mobile View: Jimdo automagically creates a mobile responsive website for you, click on the icons top right to view as laptop/mobile/tablet to test how it looks for people viewing on these devices. Design Templates Once you have registered for Jimdo Pro you can choose from a wider selection of design templates, the design template provides the structure & layout of your website. Take some time to browse the templates, choose one which suits your style/brand of your business, and is clear and easy to navigate.
