Stephanie hopes all residents of Midnapore were able to enjoy some warm summer days with loved ones over the past two months. She was grateful to be in the riding for the majority of July and August, as it allowed her to spend time with her son and husband and to connect with a great many constituents. Starting off with a full Stampede schedule, the summer has been a busy one. Below is a report on some of the work she has been doing on your behalf. (Please note: Due to the upcoming federal election, the next monthly update will be issued after the October 21st vote.)

Expanded services in Sundance Previously, Calgary Midnapore constituents had to drive a long way in order to get assistance with federal services provided through Service Canada, (such as CPP, EI, OAS, etc.). That changed in late June, thanks to residents who called Stephanie’s office asking for a more convenient location in the South. Stephanie raised this is- sue with Service Canada, and as a result, the location in Sundance (23 Sunpark Dr SE #120), which previously operated as a passport only office, is now a full-service location.

Connecting with the construction industry Stephanie was pleased to have the chance to sit down with Freder- ick Vine and Stephanie Roll, local members of the Canadian Con- struction Association. They discussed every- thing from public works to recruitment and the foreign work- ers’ program – empha- sizing how more Cana- dians could be put to work in the construc- tion industry.

AARC meeting and tour Dr. Dean Vause and his staff invited Stephanie to learn more about the Adolescent Re- covery Centre (AARC). Located in Calgary Mid- napore, the organization has been working to save young lives for 29 years. Their evidence-based clinical approach is help- ing to rebuild the lives of addicted youth and their families. She also had the opportunity to meet the dedicated AARC staff, all of whom are graduates of the program. ( Visit www.aarc.ab.ca for more information.)

Burgers to Beat MS Having met with representatives from the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society in Ottawa earlier this year, Stephanie is aware of many of the issues facing those dealing with MS. In fact, Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world. For 11 years, A&W Canada has teamed up with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada to host Burgers to Beat MS, a campaign where $2.00 from every Teen Burger goes to sup- porting Canadians living with MS. On August 22nd, Stephanie enjoyed meeting the Shawnessy franchise owner, Terry, as well as Dionne from the MS Society’s Calgary Chapter. As you can see, Stephanie had a blast working the Drive-Thru window!

Expanding routes In July, Stephanie wel- comed her friend and col- league, MP Leona Alleslev (Aurora-Oak Ridges- Richmond Hill) to Calgary. As the Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Global Security, and a former officer in Canada’s Air Force, she appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Vice-President of Calga- ry’s Airport Authority, Mi- chael Hayward and execu- tives from Westjet. The two MPs were briefed on the expansion of international routes and connections, and what benefits that will bring to the Port Authority and the local economy. During a tour of the new Westjet hangar, Ms Alleslev had the opportunity to try out a cockpit simulator.

Alberta’s Natural Resources: A Conversation with Minister Intent on learning more about the Alberta provincial govern- ment’s efforts to reduce regulato- ry burdens on businesses, Steph- anie attended a Calgary Chamber of Commerce event featuring Resources Minister Jason Nixon (right). The Minister highlighted the UCP’s plans and priorities on min- imizing costs of business compli- ance, the repeal of the provincial Carbon Tax and the federal back- stop. Stephanie was particularly interested in the Minister’s com- ments about the Technology In- novation and Emissions Reduc- tion (TIER) system, designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions while also fostering innovation.

Stampede Snapshot YAHOO! It was another wild ride this year during Stampede! It’s one of Stephanie’s favourite times of year and as usual it was jampacked with various events around town. Stephanie kicked off the world famous event by once again participating in the Cal- gary Stampede Parade, alongside her fellow Calgary MP’s. The support she received along the Parade route was much appreciated. She loved witnessing the incredible Stampede spirit at the Lake Sundance (bottom left) and Islamic Centre breakfasts. Stephanie had a great time catching up with constituents, colleagues, and friends at UCP MLA’s , , and ’s barbeque (top right) at the Trico Centre. The high energy level of these MLA’s was commendable consider- ing they’d all just returned from following a 40-hour filibuster – the long- est in Alberta’s history. Stephanie, MP Alleslev and MPP Lecce also attended the Deer Valley Stampede Car- avan breakfast (top left), where they loaded up on pancakes and conversation with constituents of Calgary Midnapore. It was Ms. Alleslev’s first Stampede—but she said it would not be her last! The Silverado Community Association hosted a super Stampede barbeque (bottom right) that put a special focus on the surrounding businesses. Stephanie was happy to meet local business owners and the Community Association members. She also managed to attend: the Global Public Affairs event held in support of the new Children’s Grief Centre; CJPAC’s Potato Pancake Stampede Breakfast; MLA ’s barbeque; a breakfast at the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Cen- tre (AARC); and MP Ron Liepert (Calgary Signal Hill) fantastic Stampede barbeque where Stephanie was joined by many Conservative supporters and fellow CPC col- leagues. Stampede is an event unique to Calgary, that supports our city, province, industries, our heritage, and our way of life. Stephanie recognizes that none of these events would have been possible without hardworking volunteers and dedicated employees - and she wishes to thank all of them for making the 2019 Stampede another out- standing experience.

Denim & Diamonds Gala Stephanie and her Electoral District Association hosted the second annual Denim & Diamonds Gala at the historic Bow Valley Ranche restaurant in July. Two guest speakers shared their views on both federal and provincial levels with attendees: MP Leona Alleslev (Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill) and MPP Stephen Lecce (King-Vaughan). Among the many guests were: Minister Rebecca Schulz (Calgary Shaw); Minister Tyler Shandro (Calgary Acadia); Minister Tanya Fir (Calgary Peigan); Councillor Jeromy Farkas (Ward 11); Councillor Peter Demong (Ward 14); and National Councillor, Marilyn Elliott. Attendees danced the night away to fantastic live music by Calgary Midnapore’s own Backroad Traveler Band, and two individuals were awarded “Cowgirl/Cowboy of the Night” for showing exemplary Stam- pede spirit. Toronto Starlight Gala It was an honour for Stephanie to attend the Toronto Starlight Gala as a special guest speaker. The event was organized to celebrate and encourage Conservative women in politics, and Stephanie enjoyed sharing her vision for Canada with a room full of strong females, in- cluding Senator Linda Frum. Debates Commission The first Leaders Debates under the new Debates Commission will occur during this fall federal election campaign. In 2018, the Liberal Government created the Commission to oversee the organi- zation of the leaders’ debates. As Shadow Minister for Democratic Institutions, Stephanie strongly advocated against this idea as maintaining impartiality under a government-run debate is extremely difficult. The Commission has already reduced the number of debates—down from five in 2015, to two. There will be an English debate on October 7th, and a French one on October 7th. Both will be held at the Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, across the river from Parliament Hill. They will be broadcast in French, English, Punjabi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, and numerous Indigenous lan- guages. American sign language, Québec sign language, closed captioning and described video will also be made available. Moderators for the English debate have been announced: Althia Raj from Huff- Post Canada; Susan Delacourt from the Toronto Star; Rosemary Barton from CBC News; Dawna Friesen from Global News, and Lisa LaFlamme from CTV News. Each journalist will be given a specific section of the debate to moder- ate. As Stephanie pointed out during the Committee meeting studying the appoint- ment of the Debates Commissioner (above) “We are calling this an independent commission, yet it's funded by the Liberal government, it was created by the Liberal government and it's the Liberal government that decides the criteria for political party leaders to participate within the debate. Given all of that, how can we possibly say that this is an independent commission?”
