SUTHERLAND LECTURE MAY 4, 2001 1 LOIS LOWRY SUTHERLAND LECTURE CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY APRIL 2001 THE REMEMBERED GATE AND THE UNOPENED DOOR In preparation for this evening, I read some of the previously published Sutherland Lectures. I should not have done that. They were all eloquent and profound and learned—and they also had footnotes (a terrifying thing, since footnotes imply research, something I have successfully mostly avoided for years, writing fiction as I do.) How can I provide them with footnotes, I wondered. What research can I do for this speech, which will probably come mostly from my heart and my memories and my imagination, none of which are annotated at all? So, as a procrastinating device, I did research on Zena Sutherland herself. I already, of course, knew who she is, and what she is, because I know who and what she has been to me; and that is who and what, surely, she has been 1 SUTHERLAND LECTURE MAY 4, 2001 2 LOIS LOWRY for many years to all serious writers of children's literature: a beacon. (I could have used other words—guide, sage, mentor—but I chose "beacon" carefully. Zena has been the bright, bright light by which we navigate. I think she has alerted many of us to rocks. And I know she has steered us through some very treacherous places at times, and helped many of us moor our flimsy vessels in safe harbors.) But I couldn't get a footnote out of that, because that description, too, came from my heart and intuition.

  • The Giver Resource Guide
THE GIVER RESOURCE GUIDE Prime Stage Theatre performs at the New Hazlett Theater Center for Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, PA. Welcome to Prime Stage Theatre: Bringing Literature to Life! Dear Educator, Welcome to Prime Stage Theatre’s 2015-2016 Season! We are pleased to bring you The Giver adapted for the stage by Eric Coble, our last production of the season. The play is an adaptation of Lois Lowry’s book of the same title, which won the Newbury Award. Eric Coble refers to The Giver as “a metaphor for what it means to grow up.” When you’re young, he notes: “there [is] no before, there’s what I’m feeling right now and what I’m enjoying right now, and then suddenly someone says, ‘Well did you ever know there was this history? Did you ever know that people suffered and [had] wars?’ That point [is] different in everyone’s life, but for all of us there’s a progression to where you suddenly realize it’s a much bigger world than what you thought it was.” All literature produced by Prime Stage is always drawn from middle and secondary Reading Lists and themes are in the curriculum. This Resource Guide is designed to provide historical background and context, classroom activities and curricular content to help you enliven your students’ experience with the literature and the theatre. We encourage you to use the theatrical games and creative thinking activities, as well as the Theatre Etiquette suggested activities to spark personal connections with the themes and characters in the story of The Giver.

  • The Village of Childhood
CLNE August 1997 -1- CHILDREN'S LITERATURE NEW ENGLAND Vermont August 1997 THE VILLAGE OF CHILDHOOD Let me start by repeating myself, a bit. When I made the acceptance speech for the 1994 Newbery Medal, I spoke briefly about the years when I was eleven, twelve, and thirteen: when I lived in Tokyo. Here is that section of the speech: We live there, in the center of that huge Japanese city, in a small American enclave with a very American name: Washington Heights. We live in an American style house, whit American neighbors; and our little community has its own movie theater, which shows American movies; and a small church, a tiny library, and an elementary school; and in many ways it is an odd replica of a United Sates village. (In later, adult years I was to ask my mother why we had lived there instead of taking advantage of the opportunity to live within the Japanese community and to learn and experience a different way of life. But she seemed surprise by my question. She said that we lived where we did because it was comfortable. It was familiar, It was safe.) At eleven years old I am not a particularly adventurous child, nor am I a rebellious one. But I have always been curious. I have a bicycle. Again and again - countless times - without my parents’ knowledge - I ride my bicycle out the back gate of the fence that surrounds out comfortable familiar, safe American community. I ride down a hill because I am curious; and I enter, riding down that hill, an unfamiliar, slightly uncomfortable, perhaps even unsafe - though I never feel it to be - area of Tokyo that throbs with life.
