DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, BILL PETERSON

Bill Peterson enters his fifth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics. Since being named Director of Athletics in 2007, Peterson has guided Shorter’s athletic department into unprecedented levels of success. His decision-making and expertise have propelled Shorter to record finishes in the NACDA-Learfield Director’s Cup in each of the last four years, including a program-best third place finish following the 2010-2011 academic year. Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year in 2010 and is currently spearheading Shorter’s exciting transition to NCAA Division II. Since 2007-2008, Shorter has won five national championships and 19 conference championships. Last year, Shorter won the NAIA Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field national championships -- the first two NAIA national championships in school history -- while the competitive cheerleading program completed a three-peat at the NCA Cheerleading National Championships in April. In Peterson’s tenure, Shorter has had 263 All-Conference honorees and 128 student-athletes honored as All-Americans. While the athletic achievements are numerous, the academic accomplishments and track record of community involvement of Shorter’s student-athletes clearly embodies his vision of excellence. Shorter’s number of NAIA Scholar-Athletes has grown from five in 2007-2008 to a record 28 in 2010-2011. Overall, 71 Shorter student-athletes have earned the title of NAIA Scholar-Athlete over the past four years while a total of 345 have been named to their respective Conference All-Academic teams. 2011 OUTLOOK

By Jim O’Hara and Matt Green

After a year full of adversity, the Shorter University men’s soccer team finally encompassed the team concept towards the end of the 2010 season. Last year’s campaign included its share of ups and downs – the ups coming by way of a fast start that catapulted the Hawks into a No. 14 national ranking and the downs in the form of injuries that gutted the roster in the season’s latter stages. All told, Shorter still came within one win of playing for the Southern States Athletic Conference championship in 2010, and head coach Josh Severns expects his troops to take things one step further when they take the field in 2011. “We really need to focus on ourselves -- one practice and one game at a time,” the seventh-year head coach said about the key to the Hawks’ success. “We will have to work towards improving every day,” Severns added. “If we are there for each other and motivated towards helping each other improve, then we will be as successful as we want to be.” The Hawks hope to improve up their 11-7-2 record from a year ago, the program’s second straight season with double-digit wins. Academically, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recognized the Soccer Hawks with the Team Academic Award for the second straight year. The Hawks will have to conjure up chemistry early in the season with the arrival of 13 newcomers. Shorter will also need to overcome the loss of three key defenders that graduated at the conclusion of 2010 – John Calderwood, Lewis Kwai and two-time Senior striker Garry Perks can become Shorter’s second all-time NAIA All-American and SSAC Defender of the Year Sebastian Stihler. leading scorer with four goals. The Scotland native set a new career “We lost some good players who had a lot of experience, and high with 12 goals on his way to All-SSAC honors in 2010. most of them were on the back line,” said Severns. “But this year I feel we’re better at every position, especially in the midfield.” transfer Luke Robinson of Rome, who transferred to Shorter last season from the University of South Carolina-Aiken, as well as Defenders and Goalkeeper newcomers Tom Fischer of Germany, Troy Johnson of Thomaston and Neshaun Senior of May Pen, Jamaica. Defensively, the Hawks may be even stronger and are certainly “This year, we definitely have the depth on the back line,” deeper this time around. Severns said. “But we are also somewhat inexperienced.” In goal, Shorter will look to a pair of tall keepers to toe the line in 6-foor-3 junior Ryan Edwards of Douglasville, a transfer from Midfielders Clayton State, and 6-4 freshman Matthew Eady of Baldwin. Both have plenty to live up to after the departure of Marcus Severns is even more confident in what the team possesses in the Stallechner, who as a freshman earned All-SSAC honors with the midfield. help of four shutouts and a 1.47 goals against average. 2010 REVIEW

By Jim O’Hara and Matt Green

Every head coach reflects on a season when that season comes to an end. There are thoughts of what was accomplished and all the good things that took place during the weeks and months that were spent chasing success. Yet there are just as many “what could have been?” questions that go through the mind more than anything else. For Shorter University head men’s soccer coach Josh Severns, the few weeks following the 2010 season provided him an opportunity to not just reflect a third straight winning season that saw the Hawks win double digit games for the second consecutive year, but also usher in thoughts about what the future holds. “You always want to go as far as possible,” Severns said as he talked about the Hawks’ 11-7-2 record in 2010, a year that came to an end with a loss in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals for the third straight season. “We had 11 wins, a good home and away record and we had our second straight winning season, and those are positives for us. “But to be honest, I’m tired of not getting past the semifinals. You always want to stay at a good level and we are close to doing that.” The 2010 season was ample evidence that the Hawks may be even closer than expected to shaking off the SSAC semifinal blues and taking the program to a higher level. With just four seniors on the rosters, the young Hawks evolved Senior Sebastian Stihler was named SSAC Defensive Player of the into a savvy squad that made a statement at the start of the season Year and an NAIA All-American for a second straight year. and overcame adversity to emerge as a threat in the SSAC before bowing out to a Mobile team that wound up advancing all the way organizing force on a back line that often included three freshmen. to the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament. “It was reassuring to see him do that,” Severns said of After roaring out to a 4-0-1 start, a run that included the Calderwood, who led the Hawks with seven assists and departs as program’s first-ever win in Montgomery, Ala., against then No. the program’s No. 2 all-time leader in that category with 16 helpers. 17-ranked Auburn-Montgomery, the Hawks found the going rough “John filled the role as our captain admirably. during the middle of the season when injuries struck, forcing “We struggled with keeping teams out of our goal all season,” numerous changes in the lineup and resulting in losses in four of the coach said, “but that doesn’t bother me as long as we score.” their next six outings.
