Tip-off is at 5 p.m. in Love Competition Hall with a ticket to Ottawa and the 2013 CIS National Championships on the line. The Gaiters are back in the RSEQ final for the first time since 2004. That year they fell to the Laval Rouge et Or. Bishop’s will be looking to get back to the National Championships for the first time since 1999 when they fin- ished in sixth place in Halifax. The previous year (1998) the Gaiters were the National Champions, the last team from Quebec to achieve that feat. Bishop’s and McGill have split their season series this year at two games apiece. Each team was 1-1 on their respective courts. The two squads were the only two teams from the RSEQ to be ranked in CIS top-10 this year; McGill currently holds the No. 10 spot. The Gaiters will look to re-kindle the magic of an 84-79 win in Love Competition Hall in November. McGill returned the favour winning 63-60 in Lennoxville in mid-January. Bishop’s responded with a forceful 56-42 win in Mitchell Gymnasium to wrap up play in January and McGill earned a 78-60 win in Montreal at the end of the season. Bishop’s will lean on 2012-13 RSEQ player of the year and defensive player of the year Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario). He was second in the league in scoring (15.3 points per game) while having the best field goal per- centage (53.8%) and most blocks (2.0 per game). Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ottawa) joined Andrews as a first team all-star and will look to use his energy to spark the Gaiters. Fifth year senior and team captain Tim Hunter (Baie D’Urfe, Quebec) played one of his best games as a Gaiter in the semi-final and will be leaned on to lead the Gaiters. He was the RSEQ’s nomination for the Ken Shields award. Finally rookie Jona Bermillo (Montreal) stepped up against Concordia, scoring 14 points and playing 29 minutes, validating a well-deserved all-rookie team nomination. The Redmen will be led by a trio of all-stars. First team all-star Simon Bibeau (St. Bruno, Quebec) led the league in free-throw percentage (96.3%), however he like the entire Redmen squad did not have any other individual stand-out statistics. Despite that, McGill finished in first place in the RSEQ. Aleks Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Vincent Dufort (Smith Falls, Ontario) were named second-team RSEQ all-stars and will look to lead the Redmen to their first Quebec championship since 1986. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Love Competition Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students while children under 12 are free. It was the first playoff game that Bishop’s hosted in seven years. The Gaiters pulled out a tight win over the Stingers 70-63 in front of a packed Mitchell Gymnasium. The Stingers started off the semi-final with eight unanswered points. Tim Hunter (Baie D’Urfe, Quebec) drained a three pointer to put the Gaiters on the scoreboard. Bishop’s grabbed momentum and pulled ahead of Concor- dia 15-11 with three minutes left in the first quarter. A three pointer by Concordia’s Kyle Desmarais (Montreal) tied the game at 18 as the first quarter came to a close. In the second quarter Concordia took another early lead on the Gaiters, 24-20. Scoring on both ends of the floor kept the game close as the Gaiters Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ottawa) dropped a trey to tie the score at 29. Bishop’s shot well, 42.9 percent in the half and outscored the Stingers 19-15 in the second quarter to take a 37-33 halftime lead. Bishop’s held their lead for most of the third quarter. Plays by the big men, Hunter and Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario) helped slow down the Stingers advances. This was not enough to keep them at bay as Concordia took the frame 15-12 and came within one, 49-48 after three quarters.
