History of the Lyric:

On the evening of October 31, 1894, Emil Paur led the Boston Symphony Orchestra into the prelude to “Die Meistersinger von Nurenberg.” It was the opening number of the gala concert celebrang Balmore’s new “Music Hall.” The evening featured Nellie Melba’s rendion of Handel’s “Sweet Bird” aria. On that night, no one could have predicted the many and varied sounds that would ring through the building in the coming years. Just 11 years later, boxers Mike Sullivan of Boston and Balmore’s own Joe Gans fought to a draw at the Lyric. In 1905, the Lyric treated Balmoreans to the first exhibion of cooking using electricity and aptly named the Food Show.

The Modell Lyric has hosted a tremendous array of notable personalies over the past 125 years, from to , from to Renee Fleming, from the to Journey, from The Nutcracker to American Dance Theater and from Robin Williams to Dave Chappelle. The Modell Lyric’s auditorium was placed on the Naonal Register of Historic Places in 1986.

In 2010-2011, the Lyric underwent an extensive backstage renovaon. In honor of their philanthropic support, the building was renamed The Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric. Modernizing the landmark theater also offered a bold, new silhouee for the midtown skyline. The compleon of this renovaon provided a world-class home for full-scale producons for the world’s greatest performers.

The Lyric Foundaon, Inc. contributes to the city through its philanthropy. It maintains this historic 125 year-old building. The Lyric Foundaon’s Educaon Department extends our impact beyond the building through partnerships with schools and community groups. Young people benefit from professional instrucon, the chance to perform at the Modell Lyric and the opportunity to see world class entertainment at this world class venue. This modern-day philanthropy connues the 125-year role of the Lyric as one of Balmore’s most lively and important instuons.
