Tom Hinds A Message from the Chairman & President: Celebrating 90 Years of Changing the Story in Southwest Alabama

United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) advocates for the health, education, financial stability, and access to life’s basic essentials for every person in every community we serve because we believe these are the building blocks for a better life and a stronger community.

As such, UWSWA commits to providing the leadership that unites community resources in addressing critical community needs and opportunities. Communities in our area face problems that have persisted for generations. Problems that no single person or organization can solve on their own.

That’s where we come in.

Celebrating 90 years of service and understanding our unique vantage point at the intersection of business and industry, government, and nonprofits, we recognized the need for a self-assessment to better identify potential for future growth. As a result, this past year we developed a five-year strategic plan to strengthen not only our organization, but also this network of connected individuals united and working together for the benefit of all.

The resulting plan lays the foundation for ongoing organizational stability and provides the future direction for making decisions and prioritizing our work to improve the quality of life in the community. The plan is organized around the four goals that define UWSWA’s core areas of work: Community Impact, Resource Development, Marketing & Branding, and Internal Operations.

I am happy to share that we have successfully worked towards achieving strategic objectives this past year that ensures we stay on target for completion in 2021. The most noticeable is the finalization of the phase-one exterior update to the United Way office.

I am also excited to announce that this past year United Way successfully negotiated a four-year agreement with the United Steel Workers District 9 for the Labor Liaison position. For more than 60 years, UWSWA and Alabama AFL-CIO have partnered together to improve the quality of life in the community through collaborative fundraising and community development, and we look forward to continuing this partnership.

Lastly, I am proud to update you on the results of the hard work of United Ways across the state of Alabama to preserve the tax-exempt status of United Way. The United Way of Southwest Alabama continued to work with the Alabama Department of Revenue to preserve the sales tax exemption for nonprofits. Participation with the Department resulted in administrative rules that provide more clear definition of United Ways in Alabama organizations that could claim sales tax exemption through affiliation with United Way, as well as eased the burden of reporting tax relief obtained by nonprofits by having the exemption. Rather that reporting annually, nonprofits are required to report every four years, beginning October 2017.

United Way of Southwest Alabama changes the story for countless individuals and families in Southwest Alabama by addressing a variety of underlying issues. We believe that meeting a single need isn’t enough and that a holistic approach is what leads to real, lasting change.

That’s why UWSWA, together with other community-minded supporters, works to implement sustainable, long-term solutions that lead to positive outcomes for the community. By addressing these issues collectively, UWSWA and our partners are able to provide tremendous opportunities and create lasting improvements.

The fruits of the efforts of everyone working collectively are evident in the statistics presented throughout this report. Behind all the statistics, though, are real people whose lives are forever changed for the better, and you made that possible.

To our partners, donors, advocates, and volunteers, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your compassion and generosity of spirit fuel the work we do every day.

It has been a privilege to serve as your 2016 Campaign Chair. This year’s campaign was about uniting like-minded individuals to lift our neighbors and support them as we change the story for Southwest Alabama.

A community of connected individuals, united and working together for the benefit of all, is at the heart of what United Way represents. It takes us all working together to initiate change in our region

Each year, numerous United Way volunteers working at companies across Southwest Alabama put on their campaign hats to raise money for the organization. Most of us attend meetings at our places of business, and many of us generously open our hearts and wallets. We do this with confidence, knowing that our money will stay in Southwest Alabama to help our local communities.

Our goal is to help people move from challenges to success and build a stable life. That’s why we partner with 48 local nonprofits and fund 101 programs across our four-county coverage area. Together, we touch the lives of thousands of our neighbors, in all stages of life, keeping our community’s safety net strong while creating long-lasting, positive change in the areas of health, education, financial stability, and life’s basic essentials.

I am pleased to announce that the 2016 Community Campaign raised $3,767,522; a 4% increase over last year’s campaign.

As a result of the generosity of our community, we have several campaign successes worth celebrating, including (but not limited to): • Hunt Refining increased their gift by 56% • Lenzing Fibers, Inc. increased their gift by $13,314, a 21% increase • Mobile County Public School System increased their gift by 35%, raising $95,025 • Regions Bank increased their gift by $23,135, an 11% increase • University of South Alabama, our largest employee campaign, raised $267,963 • Clarke-Washington Electric Membership Corporation increased their corporate gift by 1,040% • Enterprise Holdings increased their giving by 32% and increased employee participation by 123% • Austal USA increase their gift by 13%, raising a total of $232,922

Let me first thank members of my Campaign Cabinet. Every United Way Campaign Chair must have a team of individuals on whom he can count. I am fortunate to have had an outstanding team of volunteers who helped lead us to victory.

Represented on this Campaign Cabinet are the following individuals: • Mark Fillers, Renasant Bank, served as Division Co-Chair with myself for our Chairman’s Circle companies • Merceria Ludgood, Mobile County Commissioner, served as Division Chair of our Pacesetter Campaign and New Business • Guy Helmsing, Hancock Bank, served as Division Chair over Financial Institutions • Eric Patterson, Alabama Power, served as our Division Chair for Commerce & Industry • Martha Peek, Mobile County Public School System, chaired our Education Division • Sydney Raine, Mobile Works, served as our Public Service Division Chair • Celia Collins, Johnstone Adams, chaired our Professionals Division • Owen Bailey, USA Health, served as Medical Division Chair • Jimmy Lyons, Alabama State Port Authority, served as our State and Federal Division Chair

I am also indebted to you for your continued support of United Way. Working together, we have an impact felt far beyond simple dollars and cents. Your participation helps us provide important resources to the people who need them most. Early in 1926, Miss Elizabeth Fonde, Mrs. Lelia Hall, and Mrs. Corinne Wilson expressed to the President of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J.L. Bedsole, their concern regarding the need for a community-wide fundraising campaign. Mr. Bedsole suggested the formation of a Community Chest in October of 1926 and was appointed Chairman of the Community Chest of Mobile County. Over the years, the original Community Chest evolved into United Way of Southwest Alabama.

Membership in the 1926 Society is reserved for our most generous benefactors and complements other recognition societies to which a donor may belong. Once a donor has given a cumulative total of $25,000* to United Way of Southwest Alabama, they will be recognized with lifetime membership. The society was named for the year United Way of Southwest Alabama was founded and the giving circles are named in honor of the four pioneers who brought about its creation.

DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION LIBRARY Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program was designed to encourage reading to preschool children. Each month after a child is registered—up until their fifth birthday—a carefully selected, age-appropriate book is sent to the child’s home. There is no cost to the family; UWSWA provides the books free of charge. Currently, children living in Choctaw County and Mobile County zip codes 36509, 36582, 36587, 36605, 36610, 36615, or 36617 are eligible.

A total of 585 children were served in Mobile County and together received 5,373 books in 2016. In Choctaw County, 112 children were served by the Imagination Library and 1,218 books were distributed to them last year.

EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER PROGRAM (EFSP) This program was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food, shelter, and emergency assistance. In our service area, UWSWA serves as its fiscal manager and the program is governed by a local board.

The most recent funding cycle brought a total of $216,924 back into Mobile and Washington counties to help people in need.

FAMILYWIZE PRESCRIPTION SAVINGS CARD FamilyWize, in partnership with United Way, is dedicated to helping improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. In 2016, individuals in UWSWA’s service area saved a total of $518,058 as part of the FamilyWize prescription savings program.

UNITED WAY 2-1-1 Since its creation in 2007, United Way 2-1-1 has been the nation’s premier referral resource for people who are seeking health and human services information. Locally, through a UWSWA partnership with Lifelines Counseling Services, trained and caring call specialists provide direct access to free and confidential referrals to community services for individuals seeking assistance.

In 2016, United Way 2-1-1 continued to serve our communities by answering 6,333 calls and providing 9,793 referrals.

UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER CONNECT Launched in 2015, United Way Volunteer Connect is a volunteer recruitment and management website developed to increase volunteerism and mobilize resources to meet community needs in South Alabama. VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM The VITA program provides communities with free federal and state e-filing assistance. VITA partners with community organizations, such as UWSWA, to recruit and train volunteers to assist individuals with tax preparation and to educate taxpayers about tax credits for which they may qualify. UWSWA also serves as lead for the South Alabama Free E-Filing (SAFE) Coalition, a group of agencies delivering VITA filing assistance.

During the 2016 tax season, the SAFE Coalition filed 3,095 tax eturns,r which resulted in $4,002,468 returned to the community through tax refunds and tax credits.

12 United Way Collaborations

The trust we’ve developed in Southwest Alabama over the last 90 years has led to indispensable partnerships that span every sector of society, including schools, business leaders, faith-based groups, governments, and other nonprofits.

Together, we affect change on a larger scale than any single organization can accomplish alone.

AIRBUS FLYING CHALLENGE The Airbus Flying Challenge is an international youth development program that inspires young people from across the globe to continue their education, find their professional vocation, and realize their dreams through mentoring with Airbus employee volunteers. In Mobile, the program particularly focuses on character development and STEM activities for children attending Palmer Pillans Middle School. It is implemented in partnership with Mobile Area Education Foundation and the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center.

Forty-five students attending Palmer Pillans Middle School were mentored by 28 Airbus Americas Engineering employees who volunteered their time January through April to attend weekly sessions with the students.

BANK ON SOUTH ALABAMA UWSWA is a founding community partner and steering committee member of Bank On South Alabama, which was launched in 2014. Bank On South Alabama is a collaboration of financial institutions and community organizations in eight counties in South Alabama that are working to reduce the number of people who do not have checking or savings accounts—the “underbanked” and the “unbanked.”

In 2016, 56 workshops were held for 652 community members looking to increase their financial education and stability.

VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVE IN DISASTERS (VOAD) The Mobile County VOAD, of which UWSWA is a member, seeks to ensure the availability of resources and services and to encourage appropriate distribution during long-term disaster recovery, the extended period following a disaster during which agencies and organizations help affected persons after immediate needs are met.
