DCA noted in its brief to the consultants for this Review a decline in the number of WA writers, citing Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data indicating a 9% reduction since 2006-2011. It is DCA’s wish to stem this decline as far as possible. WA has a history of significant achievement in Australian literature. Amongst others, writers include Randolph Stow (Miles Franklin winner), Sally Morgan (Prime Minister’s

    Narrating Historical Massacre: Alex Miller’s Landscape of Farewell MAGGIE NOLAN1 Australian Catholic University Alex Miller’s Landscape of Farewell (2007) is one of many novels published in the first decade of the twenty-first century that attempts to deal with the unresolved question of relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, which I refer to as ‘fictions of reconciliation.’2 Like all such novels, Miller’s Landscape of Farewell takes significant risks both ethically and aesthetically in responding to the demands of reconciliation and, as such, is to be welcomed in the Australian literary landscape. This strikingly multidimensional novel has been widely praised, and shortlisted for numerous awards.3 It can be (and has been) read in numerous ways: as a novel about ‘man’s inhumanity to man’; the writing of history and fiction; the legacies of the past; love of country; guilt in the face of the sins of the father; aging and the value of friendship.4 In the introduction to his edited collection, The Novels of Alex Miller (2012), Robert Dixon offers a subtle caution against reductive or inattentive readings, particularly of novels such as Miller’s that take politically charged issues as their subject matter. It would be doing Miller a ‘grave injustice’ Dixon suggests, if readers were simply to read Miller’s novels as if they were ‘about’ a particular issue. For Dixon, Miller’s work foregrounds, without attempting to resolve, difficult ethical contradictions. Given that this novel is, to some extent, about reckoning with difference, my reading seeks to disrupt orthodox readings of the novel and is, I hope, worth the risk of reduction.

Wright’s remarkable third novel is rightfully angry, necessarily challenging, deeply personal, and universally damning. The central plot line of The Swan Book follows the story of Oblivion Ethyl(ene), or Oblivia, a mute teenage girl who is the victim of a gang rape in her displaced and army-controlled Indigenous community. The narrative style is an extension of Wright’s Carpentaria, blending many dimensions and registers simultaneously; The Swan Book is satirical, humorous, folkloric, mythical, magical and scathing, and combines the literal and the metaphoric with virtuosic skill. The logic with which Wright connects some of the most pressing political issues of our time—Indigenous rights, intervention, climate change, refugee policy—is compelling, and her projection of these issues into a dystopian future reveals both their messiness and their urgency. The ALS Gold Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding literary work in the preceding calendar year. The Medal was inaugurated by the Australian Literature Society, which was founded in Melbourne in 1899 and incorporated into the Association for the Study of Australian Literature in 1982. The winner receives a gold medal.

  • Henry Lawson, 'The Drover's Wife'
    About the Book Since Henry Lawson wrote his story ‘The Drover’s Wife’ in 1892, Australian writers, painters, performers and photographers have created a wonderful tradition of drover’s wife works, stories and images. The Russell Drysdale painting from 1945 extended the mythology around the story and it, too, has become an Australian icon. Other versions of the Lawson story have been written by Murray Bail, Barbara Jefferis, Mandy Sayer, David Ireland, Madeleine Watts and others, up to the present, including Leah Purcell’s play and Ryan O’Neill’s graphic novel. In essays and commentary, Frank Moorhouse examines our ongoing fascination with this story and has collected some of the best pieces of writing on the subject. Patrick White, the first winner of Australia’s most prestigious literature prize was crowned in 1957 with Voss, and since then the Miles Franklin Literary Award has presented more than $1.1 million to Australian authors.     Telling tales: Helen Demidenko and the autobiographical pact & “The Pact” by Melinda Denham, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts (Creative Writing) Submitted to the School of Culture and Communication, Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne June 2010 Abstract As arguably the most notorious liar in contemporary Australian literature, Helen Demidenko has been the subject of hundreds of articles, and at least four books. Her 1995 novel The Hand that Signed the Paper had already won three literary prizes and attracted significant critical attention due to its controversial subject matter, when her fraudulent identity was revealed. The critical section of this thesis draws out the implications of the ‘Demidenko Affair’ by exploring Philippe Lejeune’s theory of the autobiographical pact, genre theory and contemporary book promotion and marketing practices. Using Gérard Genette’s notion of paratexts, and Stanley Fish’s idea of interpretive communities, I argue that many reviewers of The Hand that Signed the Paper read the novel as though it was an autobiography, and that this reading position contributed to the vehemence of the condemnation its author received when her fraudulent identity ‘Helen Demidenko’ was revealed. I use genre theory to analyse the tendency to ‘read autobiographically’, which emerges from a cultural context which includes the growing popularity of non-fiction books and the prevalence of book promotion strategies which draw on the author’s persona to lend credence to their book. The creative section of this thesis has a narrator who shares much of my biography: she is around the same age, grew up in the same area as I did and has a similar name.
