Quotes

• “I'm different than a lot of owners … What I’m proudest of is just being an owner who has sat back and given autonomy to a well-oiled machine.” – Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr.

• “You have to be able to have a grasp of everything. I have a grasp of the organization. I make all the final (major) decisions. And that’s the way we're going to be. We have good people there who are able to run that operation. And we've got a great rapport…a great interaction. And that's what it takes to make a good organization.” – Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr.

• “To this day, if you need something from Eddie, anyone from the team could call him. He would find a way to help you…That partnership was forged by Eddie breaking down the barriers between players and owners. Look at any thriving owner today. They may not say that Eddie influenced them, but Eddie broke the ice for owners to have that type of relationship with their players.” – Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young

• “You can’t begin to write the history of the NFL without talking about what he did for the game. And that’s away from the five Super Bowls and all the other stuff.” – Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young

• “We did everything first class. We had a chance to stay in the best hotels. We had players from other teams who wanted to be a part of the 49ers because of Eddie DeBartolo. That’s why we were the team of the ‘80s and won so many championships. We played for the fans. We also played for Eddie DeBartolo, and I think that’s why we had so much success.” – Hall of Fame wide Jerry Rice.

• “(He’s) the greatest owner to ever own a team. It was all about family, and I think that’s the reason why we won so many championships is because he was about family. In the organization, it started up top and it feathered on down to the locker room.” – Hall of Fame Jerry Rice

• “He built a system from the ground up in which everyone was treated with mutual respect. The groundskeeper was treated like the starting quarterback. When he said he’d do anything for you, he meant it. When he said you were family, you were. You ate at his table.” – 49ers Eric Davis

• "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser.” – Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr.

• “(Being inducted into the Hall of Fame) means a culmination of a lifetime of blood, sweat, tears, love for a city, love for players, relationships with media…It means so much.” – Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr.

Quotes

• “Coach Dungy is so calm, even in the worst moments. When everyone else is frantic and running around, all you have to do is look at him." – Defensive

• "I never felt I had to change, because that's the way Coach Noll was. And I saw a guy who won four Super Bowls, [yet] always talked about football not really being your life's work…To have that resonate, that you can be good, that you can win, that you can be successful, and you don't have to live and die and eat and sleep football, I’m proud of that, too." – Tony Dungy

• "There's a perception that because you don't curse and raise your voice, maybe you're not a disciplinarian. Maybe you aren't capable of telling guys what you want and getting them to listen. I've seen this picture painted. Many people want , and I'm not like him. My demeanor is not that of the typical head coach…One of the first things I told my team at our first meeting here is this: 'You have to understand me. When I say,This is wrong. This is not acceptable,’ I'm going to say it in this [soft] tone of voice. If you want me to, I can scream that out, but hopefully, I won't have to. Hopefully, you'll know that I mean it.'” – Tony Dungy

• "I was always very impressed with Tony. The first meeting, I realized why Tony hadn't been hired before. He doesn't try to dazzle you. He doesn't try to sell

himself. The next time I met him, I come away thinking, 'I cannot understand for the life of me why he has not been hired.' The more time you spend with him, the more you see he's a very sound thinker, a very solid person. Tony won't beat on lockers, but I expect Tony's teams to be very prepared, very well-disciplined." – Rich McKay

• "I felt God had put me in places that gave me training for this (a head coaching position). I went to school and played offense, went to Pittsburgh and changed over to play defense for Chuck Noll, played for Bill Walsh, played for , learned all these systems. I just had too many guys that I learned from. I felt that eventually it would come." – Tony Dungy

• "He's a man of integrity, he has a great deal of character. He has that aura. You want to do your best because of the type guy he is." –

• “The secret to success is good leadership, and good leadership is all about making the lives of your team members or workers better.” – Tony Dungy

• “He did it his way. He did it with dignity, he did it with class, he did it with integrity. Winning was extremely important and I think he did it as well as anyone. You look at his record, you look at the different franchises he turned around, you look at the different players he was able to develop under his tutelage…He did win, then also to serve. I think that was equally as important to him. Often times he would say winning is just not enough. You have to do some other things and some more significant things in terms of having an impact on people’s lives in the community, within your household, within your team. I’m not sure there’s another person in the Hall that when you think of them, you think of what he stands for as a person, as a man and not just simply in a small group of those he played with, and those that he coached. This is universal, global. He’s an author. He’s a commentator. He’s done great things for the sport.” – Jim Caldwell

• “I can vividly describe what Coach Dungy’s career has meant to mine. He’s a walking, talking blueprint for me. He really provided great clarity for me in terms of what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. His coaching record speaks for itself. But aside from that, the groundbreaking that he was able to accomplish as a coach and the class of dignity the way he did it, the way he represented the game, I think are all of Hall of Fame worthy.” –

COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE

• "I came into in 1977. At that time, there were seven or eight African- American assistant coaches in the entire league, so it wasn't a situation where you had a lot of role models. I had a lot of people who believed in me, and I'm very, very proud to represent those men." – Tony Dungy

Quotes

• "We're coming from everywhere. We play with 15 guys in the huddle. We have guys parachuting from airplanes, fans coming from out of the stands to help us go after people." – Kevin Greene

• “I've got to live life to the fullest. I like to feel energy in my heart and my soul and my veins. I love to feel adrenalin.” – Kevin Greene

• "Kevin is a throwback. He loves the work, and he's one of the great preparers. He takes great physical care of himself. Within a week after the season, he's back lifting weights. – Coach

• “I just love the game. I played intramurals before I walked on. And I've kept my love for football all these years. I still get really, really fired up for a game. – Kevin Greene

• "Kevin's game just doesn't start on the field. It starts in the weight room and in the offseason. He breaks down more film than anyone. A lot of guys stop doing that as they get older. ln his two years here, he's shown us a lot of leadership." –

• “When people think we’re just playing for the money, that’s not true. Football is a lot of pressure. It’s very stressful. It’s a mental thing and a physical thing. Losing is just hard. It’s not about playing the game for money because money will come and go. You’ve got to play the game for more than money.” – Kevin Greene

• "In any given business, in any given occupation, in any job, you get out of it what you put into it. The more work, commitment, time, determination and passion, the more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. If you go into something half-stepping and shallow, that's what you're going to get out of it. You're going to come up short…I've had my critics. I've ignored them all. I'm going to play this game as long as I humanly can. It’s been my life.” – Kevin Greene

COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE

• “I loved getting a sack. First it was a feeling of relief. I know that is what that organization really wanted me to do. They wanted me to rush the passer, defend against the run because you can’t be soft against the run…But what they really wanted me to do was crush quarterbacks. When I was really able to do that it was a feeling of relief. My teammates depended on me to do that. I contributed. I didn’t want to let my teammates down…It was just me making a contribution and not letting my brothers down.” – Kevin Greene

• "He was a positive influence on the guys around him. One thing you knew was that he was going to give you 100 percent every play. He brought an awful lot of passion to the locker room, and he was a good example for the younger players by the way he prepared. He would study as much tape as any player that we had, he would gather the guys together and study individually. He spent extra time in the weight room. Quotes

• "People need to start talking about Marvin Harrison. He's a bad boy. He's not getting all the credit because he's not a flamboyant receiver. He's like a - collar worker. He goes out and gets his job done and takes it to the house." –

• "You'd like to put him on a commercial for young players and say, if you want to become a great player, do what Marvin Harrison has done - work every day, including the offseason, and make yourself into a superstar.'" – Bill Polian

• "It's important for him to be good. That's because he is so competitive. He wants the ball on third down, he wants it in pressure situations.” – Peyton Manning

• "I know what type of player I am and what I can do on the football field. It's just a matter of getting the ball in my hands as I go downfield and see what I can do.” – Marvin Harrison

• "Winning is fun and losing becomes a business. From my perspective, it's my job and I want to have fun doing what I love to do. That's playing football…I'm the type of guy that I don't let a lot of pressure build on me…The pressure comes in when you try to do too much. It doesn't take one person to win a ballgame.

• "It's definitely an honor. It's definitely a privilege. It doesn't just happen. You don't take it for granted. You don't just wake up and say, 'I'm a Hall of Famer…All of the pieces fell into place for me to where I was able to show my talent." – Marvin Harrison

Quotes

• "I've never coached a guy with the combination of talents he has. I told him once, 'If you don't get to Canton, the only reason is yourself.’" – , the Rams' offensive line coach

• "He's so smooth it looks like he's not working hard. But he is." – Jim Hanifan

• "As much as you see the receivers and backs doing with motion and formations, the linemen have to do something similar in this offense. They have a huge range of blocks to make - reach blocks, slip blocks, fold blocks. Orlando can do them all and at a Pro Bowl level." – , Rams GM

• "He is so graceful. It's unbelievable how he can move. It astonishes us as coaches in watching his athleticism as he moves." –

• "When you're talking about Orlando, you don't worry about it when he gets a big, strong guy against him because he's big and strong. And you don't worry about it when he gets a smaller, quick guy because he's big and quick. There are just no worries. It's a done deal and you can pretty much X out the person on him and go about your business.” – Kurt Warner

• "Initially it's tough for an offensive lineman to come in and help make it a winning team. When I first came, there was so much pressure and so many expectations, but it wasn't nearly as high as I put on myself. I wanted to go out and do well and go to Pro Bowls and win Super Bowls. I can say I'm on the right track now." – Orlando Pace

• "I've been saying that as long as I've been playing it. To me (left tackle) it's a skill position for the simple fact that nine times out of 10 you're blocking probably the best athlete on their defensive team." – Orlando Pace

• (on playing left tackle) “Well, you know what? It came part of the offense. I know when those guys are running down the field (for) 60-, 70-yard touchdowns, I was a part of that. I think our coach at the time, he went a little bit overboard. I liked to run the ball every once in a while as well. It really honed my skill set down – pass blocking, (protecting) the ball and everything. We had a lot of talent there in St. Louis (with) Kurt Warner and those guys. It made my job personal, but it was fun.” – Orlando Pace

• "That's what you play for. You can get your own stats or accolades, but when your peers respect you…that's really why you play the game, to be respected by your peers. When they hold you in that high regard, that means a lot. It means a lot to me." – Orlando Pace

• "Being from Ohio, having the chance to visit the Hall of Fame as a young player, you envision yourself being in that room or having your own bust. And for me, it's always been a goal of mine to do that. It's just the chance to close out my career by meeting that last goal, that final goal I set out for." – Orlando Pace

Quotes

• "Even if you're covered by a guy he can only cover half of you. Stabler would hit the other half. – Dave Casper

• "He had a great ability not to worry when a bad thing happened on the field. He would call a play, and if it didn't go right, when they came back to the huddle. he'd say, 'Easy to call, hard to run.' Or if he'd throw a ball too low, he'd say, 'Lowball thrower, highball drinker.' He had these little sayings for everyone. It was a finishing thing for that play. And then he went right on to the next thing." – Dave Casper

• "He would never acknowledge the crowd. He never cared about nothing but the game. Never cared about nothing but throwing that stupid football." –Dave Casper

• “Kenny Stabler would go back and then he would rise…that’s the way he played. The bigger the situation I’m going to get back, I’m going to get to the head of my drop and I’m going to step and I’m going to rise and then I’m going to rise to the occasion, and that’s what he did.” – John Madden

• "I started my life third and long. I skipped practices. I got kicked off my high- school team. I got kicked off my college team. I left pro football in 1969. I've had third-and-15 my whole life. Everybody's had rocky moments from day one. But sometimes you pick up third and long, and that's where you make your money. That's where the satisfaction comes, from the game and from life." – Ken Stabler

• "It sure didn't have a lot of velocity on it. But I think accuracy is the thing that's overlooked, and underrated. That was my game. It's not just a high completion percentage, or quickness of release. It's where you put the ball. I had a pretty good knack of putting the ball where I wanted." – Ken Stabler

• "The bigger the situation, the calmer he got, which was a great combination with me, because I was just the opposite. I was intense. If everything were normal, and we were ahead, he'd get bored. He had to have his ass to the fire to get really focused in on something. That's when he really got focused in. Instead of getting excited and tight, he'd get calm." – John Madden

• "I want to tell you what I never saw him do, I never saw him chew guys out. He never once said, 'You should have run here.' Never did I see Stabler single a guy out. It was always just like 'All right, next play.'" – tackle

IRVIN INVITES SPECIAL GUESTS TO ENSHRINEMENT Hall of Fame wide receiver MICHAEL IRVIN was hosting the annual Michael Irvin Academy at the University of North Texas in Denton on July 8-11. Denton is located just 40 miles north of Dallas, where the lives of five Dallas Police Officers were tragically lost on July 7, 2016.

Just after the heartbreaking events, the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver met Jackie Boyd, a father of several foster children. The children are from a variety of different backgrounds, races and ethnicities.

During the tragic time in Dallas, Boyd was struggling to find a way to talk to his children about race tensions, distrust between community members and police officers, and how to teach his children to be safe in today’s world. IRVIN took a liking to Boyd and his family. Irvin invited the family to Canton for the 2016 Enshrinement Week to experience “The Most Inspiring Place on Earth!” Boyd and his wife Anna along with two of their children, Gabriel Boyd and Jayshaun Byas will be IRVIN’s honored guests for this year’s Enshrinement Week festivities.

Browne retired after a 50-year career with the National Football League this past March. He left the league as the longest serving employee it ever had. NFL commented, “Joe Browne did a remarkable job representing the NFL during his extraordinary 50-year career with the league office. I was fortunate to break in as an NFL intern under Joe. It was a terrific education. Joe was always a fierce protector of the shield, a demanding innovator, and he set the standard for effective sports PR. He was a mentor. He is a friend, and he is most deserving of the Ralph Hay Pioneer Award that will preserve his place in NFL history.”
