NAOSHIMA Written by Martin Provost and Séverine Werba A film by Martin Provost 7 avenue Franklin D. I took advantage of the trip to take a break there for 3 weeks. I, of course, went to visit Kyoto and its temples, the Emperor’s marvelous gardens, but I also endeavored to get off the beaten track by going to visit Ozu’s grave in Kamakura, by walking through the wild forests, by spending the night in a traditional Osen usually reserved for the Japanese and by trying to immerse myself in the simplest fashion in this culture that seemed so foreign to me. And then I went to Naoshima. It was a very powerful experience. On this industrial island, one man, Soichiro Fukutake, had had the brilliant idea of asking Tadao Ando to design a modern and contemporary art center in the midst of nature. I live in France very close to Giverny where Monet painted his famous Waterlilies. His landscapes are familiar to me because, like him before, I live just on the banks of the Seine, very close to the church of Vétheuil, where he had his first house, in the hills of Chantemesle which he painted so often. -

Celebrating Forty Years of Films Worth Talking About
2 NOV 18 6 DEC 18 1 | 2 NOV 18 - 6 DEC 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSEcinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Move over, Braveheart! Last month saw the culmination of our 40th anniversary celebrations here at Filmhouse, and it has been hugely interesting time (for me at any rate!) comparing the us of now with the us of then. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed spending time talking to Filmhouse’s first Artistic Director, Jim Hickey, and finding out in more detail than I knew what myriad ways the business of running Filmhouse has stayed the same and the as many ways it has not (one of these days I’ll write it all down and you can find out how interesting it is for yourselves!). UK film distribution itself has changed immeasurably – the dawn of the multiplex in the latter half of the 1980s saw to that. Back in 1978, Filmhouse itself was part of a sort of movement that saw the birth of a number of similar venues around the UK whose aim was to show a kind of cinema (predominantly foreign language) that simply was not catered for within mainstream film exhibition. Despite 40 years having passed and much having changed, the notion of an audience-driven, ‘curated’ cinema like Filmhouse remains something of a film exhibition anomaly; and something Jim Hickey wrote 30+ years ago rings just as true today as it did then: “But best of all, the new cinemas are being run by those who care about audiences as well as the films that they have paid to watch.” Now, we’ve got a bit of a first for you in November, for we have metaphorically got into bed with Netflix to give one of their films a hugely deserved, exclusive, short run in a cinema – namely David Mackenzie’s splendidly entertaining Robert the Bruce epic, Outlaw King. -

Ariane's Thread Is Also MY Ariane’S Thread
AGAT Films & Cie presents ARIANE’S THREAD A film by Robert Guédiguian with Ariane ASCARIDE Jacques BOUDET, Jean-Pierre DARROUSSIN, Anaïs DEMOUSTIER Youssouf DJAORO, Adrien JOLIVET, Gérard MEYLAN and Lola NAYMARK 92min – 1.85 – 5.1 – DCP International Sales FILMS DISTRIBUTION 34, rue du Louvre – 75001 Paris, France www.filmsdistribution.com Ph : 01.53.10.33.99 SYNOPSIS _____________________________________________________________________ Ariane, a middle-aged woman, is lonelier than ever in her pretty house. It's her birthday. The candles on the birthday cake are lit. But all of her loved ones have sent their apologies - they're not coming. So she takes her pretty car and leaves her pretty suburban neighborhood to get lost in the big sunny city of Marseille. CAST ____________________________________________________________________ Ariane ASCARIDE Jacques BOUDET Jean-Pierre DARROUSSIN Anaïs DEMOUSTIER Youssouf DJAORO Adrien JOLIVET Gérard MEYLAN Lola NAYMARK Judith MAGRE, doing the voice of the turtle INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT GUÉDIGUIAN _____________________________________________________________________ Where did you get the idea for Ariane’s Thread? I wanted to make a film just for the pleasure of making it, in a completely free style, like a theatrical “impromptu” or improvisation - a little, fast-paced poetic piece, that would be exhilarating and pure fun. I also had a strong desire to let go, to simply perform for the sake of it. The screenplay needed to be a “performance vessel” for the actors, the technicians and of course, for myself. With the exception of Le Promeneur du Champ-de-Mars [The Last Mitterand], in which she wasn’t cast, you have written 16 films for Ariane Ascaride. -

Interview with Yoshishige Yoshida Cahiers Du Cinéma 1970
Interview with Yoshishige Yoshida Cahiers du Cinéma 1970 Translator’s Note : The following interview with Yoshishige Yoshida appeared in the October 1970 issue of Cahiers du Cinéma (# 224), devoted in large part to three directors of the Japanese new wave: Yoshida, Masumura, and Hani. The cover features a still from Eros plus Massacre ( Erosu purasu Gyakusatsu ) and the interview with Yoshida is preceded by an article on that film written by Pascal Bonitzer, one of the journal’s editors. Fairly abstract and of a decidedly Derridean bent, this article makes much of the fact that in France (or at least in Cahiers ), the title is written “Eros + Massacre”: Bonitzer tracks down every imaginable appearance of the plus sign in the film and wields it as the preferred instrument with which to exorcise its secrets. A couple of admittedly out-of-context excerpts should give something of the flavor of this piece, not atypical of the theoretical, polemical criticism favored in Cahiers during this period: It is in effect the grapheme (+), inscribed in the title as the sign of an operation between sexual and political violence, which you will find again in the film under an infinity of figures, even non-figures: as the very structure of figuration. You will reencounter, at each level of casual and open legibility, barring the linearity from which your reading proceeds, the insistence of a vertical inscription, be it plastic or figurative, syntactic or narrative, which will frustrate every sense and every summary. … The logic of the (+) thus implies a logic of the loop which annuls itself (of the O). -
