  • Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

  • Selling Masculinity at Warner Bros.: William Powell, a Case Study
Katie Walsh Selling Masculinity at Warner Bros.: William Powell, A Case Study Abstract William Powell became a star in the 1930s due to his unique brand of suave charm and witty humor—a quality that could only be expressed with the advent of sound film, and one that took him from mid-level player typecast as a villain, to one of the most popular romantic comedy leads of the era. His charm lay in the nonchalant sophistication that came naturally to Powell and that he displayed with ease both on screen and off. He was exemplary of the success of the new kind of star that came into their own during the transition to sound: sharp- or silver-tongued actors who were charming because of their way with words and not because of their silver screen faces. Powell also exercised a great deal of control over his publicity and star image, which is best examined during his short and failed tenure as a Warner Bros. during the advent of his rise to stardom. Despite holding a great amount of power in his billing and creative control, Powell was given a parade of cookie-cutter dangerous playboy roles, and the terms of his contract and salary were constantly in flux over the three years he spent there. With the help of his agent Myron Selznick, Powell was able to navigate between three studios in only a matter of a few years, in search of the perfect fit for his natural abilities as an actor. This experimentation with star image and publicity marked the period of the early 1930s in Hollywood, as studios dealt with the quickly evolving art and technological form, industrial and business practices, and a shifting cultural and moral landscape.

The romantic star of dozens of Hollywood movies, Flynn’s real life was in fact far more adventurous than any of his films. In a life dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure, Flynn became notorious for his love affairs, scandals and rebellious nature. But there was another, much less well known side to his character. He was a fine writer, both of novels and journalism, wrote well reviewed novels and reported from wars and revolutions. Among his scoops was the first interview with the newly victorious Fidel Castro who Flynn tracked down in his mountain hideaway in Cuba. In Tasmanian Devil we discover the unknown Flynn, from his troubled childhood in Tasmania to his death, just fifty years later, in the arms of his teenage lover. We hear from his surviving children, friends and colleagues and discover an amazing life of almost unbelievable events.

BAMcinématek presents Under the Influence: Scorsese/Walsh, a 12-film series pairing Martin Scorsese works with their inspirations from Raoul Walsh’s seminal oeuvre, Mar 12—26 Opens with Walsh’s Regeneration, featuring live piano by acclaimed silent film accompanist Steve Sterner The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Feb 12, 2014—From Wednesday, March 12 through Wednesday, March 26, BAMcinématek presents Under the Influence: Scorsese/Walsh, pairing six Scorsese classics with their inspirations from Raoul Walsh’s seminal oeuvre. The still-undervalued Walsh’s lean, mean portraits of gangsters, knack for evoking gritty urban locales, and assured handling of white- knuckle action provide a virtual template for modern-day maestro (and avowed Walsh admirer) Martin Scorsese’s work. Viewed side by side, the films of these two iconic auteurs reveal a fascinating and ongoing creative dialogue across the generations. One of the great action directors of the Hollywood studio era, Raoul Walsh was the swaggering, manly-man artist behind some of the best movies to star James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Errol Flynn. ―Walsh’s explosive outcast characters were bigger than life,‖ said Martin Scorsese, whose own violent, masculine oeuvre is just as full of explosive outcasts. ―Their lust for life was insatiable, even as their actions precipitated their tragic destiny. The world was too small for them.‖ Walsh was ―probably Scorsese’s single most important influence,‖ wrote critic Dave Kehr (Moving Image Source), even if Scorsese’s debts to Michael Powell, Luchino Visconti, and other filmmakers have been more widely acknowledged over the years.

  • "The Aviator" Film Revue
The Aviator Reviewed by H. W. Moss Directed by Martin Scorsese Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, John C. Riley, Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda, Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Gwen Stefani and Jude Law. Written by John Logan As Howard Hughes is rescued from the wreckage of his experimental photo reconnaissance spy plane which destroyed three homes in Beverly Hills when it crashed in 1946 and very nearly killed him, he identifies himself to the Marine master sergeant who saved him as, I m Howard Hughes, the aviator. Thus the origin of the film s title, The Aviator, which was directed with extreme attention to historical detail by Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the amazing Mr. Hughes who cut a larger than life swathe through Hollywood, made aeronautical history and was a leading corporate industrialist from the Roaring 20 s right through the Cold War 50 s in America. He also developed psychological problems and is generally considered to have gone nuts before he died alone and friendless in 1976. Although DiCaprio is not the first person who comes to mind to portray a man whose legacy survives to this day in the form of scientific research and satellite communication, he does an incredible job with the part. This is an Academy Award nomination role and DiCaprio deserves to win. He takes Hughes as a youth and imbues him with the sense of personal ability and arrogance the young tool-and-die man from Houston must have had. As years pass and Hughes many famous female companions, mostly movie stars but young chippies as well, come and go DiCaprio achieves character change and physical feature alterations that are nothing short of striking.

The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1992 MICHAEL CURTIZ: FROM HUNGARY TO HOLLYWOOD November 27, 1992 - January 23, 1993 A survey of more than fifty films by Michael Curtiz (1888-1962), one of cinema's most prolific directors from the studio era, opens on November 27, 1992, at The Museum of Modern Art. As Warner Bros, house director in the 1930s and 1940s, Curtiz symbolizes the crispness and energy that distinguished the Warners' style. On view through January 23, 1993, MICHAEL CURTIZ: FROM HUNGARY TO HOLLYWOOD explores the consistent quality and versatility of the filmmaker's work. The Hungarian-born Curtiz mastered virtually all genres and, during his twenty-seven-year career at Warner Bros., made every type of film from westerns and musicals to social dramas and comedies. A strong director of actors, he made stars of such disparate types as Errol Flynn, John Garfield, and Doris Day, and earned an Academy Award and a renewed career for Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce (1945). Many of his films were popular critical and financial successes. Curtiz possessed an acute narrative sense, displayed in such remarkable films included in the exhibition as The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), with Flynn and Olivia de Havilland; Casablanca (1942), for which Curtiz received an Academy Award for Best Director; Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), the musical which won James Cagney an Academy Award; Mildred Pierce, the film noir portrait of an imperfect American family; Young Man with a Horn (1950), starring Kirk - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 Douglas as an obsessed jazz trumpeter and inspired by Bix Beiderbecke's life; and The Breaking Point (1950), based on Ernest Hemingway's To Have and Have Not, His early successes -- Cabin in the Cotton (1932), a melodrama about sharecroppers, and The Mystery of the Max Museum (1933), an early all-color horror film -- are also included in the exhibition.

  • The Robin Hood Legend and Its Cultural Adaptation for the Film Industry: Comparing Literary Sources with Filmic Representations
JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES - VOLUME 3, (2001-2), 37-46 THE ROBIN HOOD LEGEND AND ITS CULTURAL ADAPTATION FOR THE FILM INDUSTRY: COMPARING LITERARY SOURCES WITH FILMIC REPRESENTATIONS RICHARD CLOUET Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ABSTRACT. The legend of Robin Hood has been going strong for over 600 years. In that time, the English hero has been a medieval revolutionary, an earl in Renaissance drama, a Saxon freedom fighter in the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries or a courteous robber. Nowadays the hero is especially known as a famous romantic film star. This paper is about the way the legendary hero has been interpreted over the centuries and the medieval texts translated and adapted to suit the taste of the new audience. This capacity of adaptation in the Robin Hood legend has been demonstrated in the twentieth century through the various film adapatations of the now legitimate bandit, rightfully fighting against coercive and unjust authorities. “In the early 1990s the Hollywood movie, Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves, captured the hearts and minds of millions, its phenomenal success reflecting a timeless fascination with the world’s most famous outlaw”(Phillips and Keatman 1995: 1). With such words, G. Phillips and M. Keatman started their bestselling Robin Hood – The Man Behind the Myth, an amazing thesis on the popular myth written in the way detective stories are. Robin Hood is certainly the most famous outlaw of them all, as popular today as when the stories first appeared over six hundred years ago. But let us make clear, right from the beginning of this paper, that Robin Hood never existed (Clouet 1998: 51).
