The Preserve was first established in 1988 when Irvine voters approved the Irvine Open Space Initiative, which provided for the permanent protection of a contiguous network of conservation and open space . Currently more than 5,200 acres, the Preserve is a mosaic of some of the most rare and biologically diverse in the world, including wetlands, oak , grasslands and coastal sage scrub. This scenic landscape has been designated a Natural Landmark by both the State of California and the U.S. Department of the Interior for its preservation of critically important and . The City of Irvine is proud of this spectacular area and welcomes visitors to engage in the wide variety of recreational and educational opportunities it offers.

Irvine Open Space Preserve Hours: 7 a.m. to Sunset. Please note that some trails are open to the public for self-guided daily access (indicated in white on map) and others may only be accessed through docent-led activities due to sensitive habitat (indicated in yellow on map). Public Parking Hours: Varied Parking near the Preserve is available at several locations (indicated by blue circles on map):

Quail Hill T railhead, 34 Shady Canyon Drive – Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Turtle Rock Community Park, 1 Sunnyhill – Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Bommer Canyon Trailhead, 1 Bommer Canyon Road – Hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bommer Vista Point, 340 Summit Park Drive – Hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Vehicles left in parking lots after posted hours are subject to citation. Please check the parking lot hours before you start your trek!

Trail Etiquette The Irvine Open Space Preserve provides outdoor fun for visitors of all ages and interests, so please remember to be courteous to others. Bikers yield to hikers, and bikers and hikers yield to equestrians. And remember….no dogs are a ll owed in the Preserve, except on the Quail Loop Trail. Equestrians are only permitted from May 1 to November 30 of each year.

Wildland Hazards This is a natural open space, characterized by certain inherent dangers, including mountain lions, rattlesnakes, ticks, poison-oak, loose rocks and gravel and steep or rugged terrain. For your safety, please stay alert and on designated trails only!
