Absa2 Bank Zambia PLC (registered number 119710006444) is regulated by the Bank of Zambia. In-flight Magazine | July - Aug 2020 AFRICANACITY A new word for a longstanding attitude A celebration of Africa’s ability to turn every challenge into an opportunity There is a spirit across the continent that is unmatched elsewhere. It is largely unspoken, a feeling and way of thinking that allows us to say with the greatest of confidence that Africa’s future is bright and that we can do anything we set our minds to.

All too often, news headlines dwell on Africa’s macro challenges, overlooking its track record of creative, ingenious and often unique, home-grown solutions to problems. While Africa’s challenges remain true, we also have a remarkable ability to overcome obstacles in ingenious ways. As a Pan-African Bank committed to the bright future of our continent, Absa is focused on finding solutions.

A walk down any bustling African city – from Lagos to Nairobi, Johannesburg to Kampala – quickly reveals that Africa is a continent of doers, always going above and beyond to get things done.

More recently, Robert Shimaingo, a fisherman in Zambia, realised that refrigeration problems were hampering his community’s ability to get a fair market price for their fish. Shimaingo’s community did not have a source of electricity and were moving large blocks of ice to the riverside, which quickly melted. A determined Shimaingo designed and built a floating, hydropower river turbine that generates power to refrigerate fish onsite, keeping them fresher for longer, and ultimately increasing his community’s competitiveness at the local market. But Shimaingo went a step further, using the turbine’s excess energy to power the once-powerless fishing village.

The Zambian Knitting Movement should serve as an inspiration to the bank and communities across the world: with tonnes of plastic bags polluting drains and roads, the Zambian government has banned plastic bags and their resultant waste. This is an admirable effort, but still leaves the problem of existing plastic bags that have not been properly disposed. This inspired the formation of the Zambian Knitting Movement, which turns such wasted plastic bags into items of use and value with only a few knitting needles and pairs of scissors. Zambians are using a well-established knitting tradition to create a cleaner, less wasteful society.

As Absa embarked on one of the continent’s most ambitious corporate rebranding programmes – changing our name from Barclays to Absa – we took a close look at our business, our people, and the people we serve, determined to forge a refreshed, fit-for-purpose bank that had meaning and relevance in the lives of our customers and colleagues.

We also looked at our context and our continent for inspiration. What is it that makes Africa unique? What do we do that no one else does? What is our essence, our driving force, and the thing that will unlock our potential?

We believe that Africa has a unique way of getting things done, a way that could inspire us as one of the continent’s largest banking and financial services groups. But we didn’t have a word to describe this – so we created one:

Africanacity – the distinctly African ability to always find ways to get things done.

As an organisation, we are inspired by the spirit of Africanacity, which thrives on turning every challenge into an opportunity. We are inspired by people who challenge traditional ways of thinking. Africanacity is the inspiration behind Absa. In defining this word, we commit to helping people find a way to achieve their goals and to realise their dreams.

We believe that everyone needs a financial partner who will help them realise their possibility. From our colleagues and customers, to the continent at large, Africanacity is a call to action for everyone. It’s a defined term to describe a longstanding attitude. It’s what drives and inspires everything Absa believes in, and, above all, it drives the beautiful continent we’re here to serve.

Firstly, before we even come to Air operators, there Tare a number of Infrastructure developmental projects (two new International Airports) going on Zambia whose completion was targeted in this 2020 which may see setbacks to the projected dates. Secondly, coming to Air transporters like ourselves, it is something unprecedented and at no point in my mind as CEO, did I ever project or simulate such a business situation. Note from the Publisher

ello! It is good to be back. It is our hope and prayer that you are all alive and kicking. The insurgency of the Covid-19 pandemic that ravaged our nation early this year, brought a lot of instability not only to business but also to our lives. My greatest fear during quarantine was not knowing when people’s lives would get back on track. My fear intensified seeing devastating damage that this pandemic Hhas caused in other countries where the pandemic resulted in a number of mortalities. Luckily for us in Zambia, the effects have been skewed towards job and business loses. In order to promote solidarity in preserving life, amidst this pandemic, some business voluntarily closed in order to mitigate the spread of the virus. As Mahogany team, our hearts go out to everyone whose health, families, jobs and businesses has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like many, our team has experienced several ups and downs, and has had to learn the new normal way of conducting regular business. In this trying moment, we stay committed to doing whatever we can to continue serving our clients and community diligently, and we are optimistic that we shall continue moving our operation from strength to strength. We would further like to acknowledge and appreciate the emails and phone calls we received from many of you. We say a big thank you for wishing us well.

We thank God for preserving us thus far and having the privilege to reconnect with one another. We have come to realize that this is the new normal, and as people of hope, we have to continue being optimistic. I can assure you, we are all in high spirits as you will see from the content of this publication.

Please take good care of yourselves. Follow all health guidelines as prescribed by the Ministry of Health as we try to circumvent this unpredictable covid-19 situation.

Background The corona virus outbreak also known as Covid-19 has taken the world by shock affecting thousands of people across the globe. The effect of this pandemic is also having a growing impact on the global economy. Consequently, it may have already impacted your business negatively leaving your business financially distressed. This article is intended to provide you with the awareness on business rescue and its benefits.

Business Rescue explained Business rescue proceedings protect a company that is financially distressed, but potentially sustainable, from ending up in receivership or liquidation as it may have a chance to be rescued. Business rescue is defined as proceedings to facilitate the rehabilitation of a company that is financially distressed by providing temporary supervision of the company and the management of its affairs, business and property.

Has covid-19 crisis caused your business serious financial distress? Well do not panic, because there are some viable steps a business can carry out to recover from the financial distress caused by the impact of Covid-19. It must be mentioned that businesses that recover from financial distress are focused and diligent to seek professional advice, recover outstanding debt, reduce or rearrange expenses, sell unwanted assets and adopt new cash generating techniques or cash conserving strategies. These are just but a few steps your business can take. There are many more other options that can resuscitate cash flow into your business.

Objective of Business Rescue The primary objective with business rescue is to maintain the company as a going concern. The secondary objective is to achieve a better outcome for the company`s creditors as a whole than is likely to be the case if the company were to be liquidated.

Are your creditors threatening to sue? A business in business rescue proceedings cannot be placed in liquidation, it is protected. Section 23 Subsection 8(a) of the Corporate Insolvency Act No. 9 of 2017 states that A company that has been placed under supervision in accordance with this section shall not adopt a resolution placing itself in liquidation until the termination of the business rescue proceedings. General Moratorium on legal proceedings– Section 25 of the Corporate Insolvency Act states that A legal proceeding shall not be brought, against a company or in relation to any property belonging to the company or lawfully in its possession, during business rescue proceedings. This is however, subject to some exceptions. Therefore, while in business rescue your company will be protected from potential lawsuits and give you a chance to focus on rehabilitating your business.

Do you need a business Rescue Administrator? Should you have any questions on this article or related matter, do not hesitate to contact Michael Mwape Moono, Esq. on [email protected]

Can you ask for help if you need it? By Mutale Kabumbu have always struggled with trying to understand when to be independent and handle things on my own and when to ask for help from the people around me. I have considered myself to be a fairly self-reliant individual and it took life experience to help me realise that there is nothing wrong with needing and asking for help. I In my quest to establish this balance, I have realised that the question though not simple to answer, has an almost one size fits all solution; Resilience.

I know the question you are asking right now, ‘How is resilience the answer?’ Well, according to the oxford dictionary, ‘Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties’. Further, when we talk about resilience, it also means how well one can adapt to life events. Note that in both definitions there is no specific mention of whether that recovery or adapting should be done with or without help.

In discussing how resilience creates the balance for independence and asking for help in the way that we manage our life stressors, the goal is to understand how resilience is built. Resilience should exist in all the

24 In-flight Magazine | June - July 2020 various spheres of our lives; physical, social/ spiritual, psychological, emotional and financial. Building resilience is essential in allowing us a fighting chance and for survivor. It is even more paramount because change is a constant in the world around and within us making resilience our boat for trading the waters of change. So how do we build this resilience? The following are effective methods to build the resilience needed to navigate change and stress in our lives.

Physical: When we discuss physical resilience, the focus is on how one can reduce our susceptibility to illness. This can be done by building up one’s immune system (eating right and water intake), ensuring physical fitness (exercise and sleep), preventing harm to oneself (reducing/stopping alcohol or smoking) and being aware of one’s health (going for a physical check-up)

Psychological: Continuous learning helps you to build resilience psychologically. You are able to develop more skills and gain knowledge that is useful in managing stress as well as protect yourself from the negative impacts of some stressors. You can also build psychological resilience by setting goals as this ensures that you can have a sense of direction and achievement.

Emotional: There is nothing wrong with feeling. Emotions are normal and real. How you behave as a response to your emotions is what can be deemed as wrong or right. Building emotional resilience focuses on facing and understanding your emotions and moving on from them. Emotional resilience also helps us to experience pleasurable emotions.

Financial: Managing finances in a way that accommodates saving is necessary. This helps one plan for tomorrow. Living within ones means is another. These methods ensure that not only do you prepare for anticipated stressors but that you are also able to avoid unnecessary ones.

Social: This is where external resilience is key. Building resilience socially is key because it is in our nature as humans to seek relationship. Social networks (family, friends, colleagues) make it possible for us to build resources outside ourselves that we can count on and utilize when our internal resources are depleted or insufficient. This means that by investing in our friendships and families (through spending time, socializing), we create opportunities for us to be able to ask for help.

Spiritually: this type of resilience helps you to sustain your sense of purpose and self as well as a positive mindset when managing stress. Building spiritual resilience involves practising positive thinking, finding meaning for one’s life (through religion or philosophy) and being open to challenges. The entire process of building resilience is what is known as self-care. It cannot happen if you are not intentional about it and if you do not actively engage in it. You have to be able to make a plan as to what activities in the various aspects of your life will help you build resilience and then make time to do those things.

Resilience is built within and around us. Once that is done, ask yourself, can I ask for help if I need it?

But who is this Beatrice Mumba?

I am the last born in a family of four; two boys and two girls. I was born in January 1997. Contrary to the general perception in society that the last born is lazy and mum’s favorite, I was neither mum’s favorite nor her favorite. In our family, my immediate older brother stole the show but we were all loved regardless.

My two siblings and I were raised by a single mother while the other one was raised by my grandmother. I must admit that the hardest time when growing up in such a setup was when the three of us passed our exams grade 12, 9 and 7 respectively at the same time. That called for funds for my oldest brother who needed to do his Tertiary Education and my immediate older brother who was then supposed to go to High School and lastly me who needed to do my Secondary School Education. Up to now, I can’t figure how my mum single- handedly managed to take of us all.

I did my Primary School Education at Kalingalinga Basic School. I must stress here that I started my primary education earlier than the set grade one age. Of course, this was met with high forces of resistance from both teachers and the head teacher who thought I was too young to start grade one. My mum had to beg the head teacher to allow me to start grade one. In her plea, she explained explicitly that she could not afford to take me to a nursery school. The head Determination is teacher gave in to mum’s plea hence I started my grade one at just the age of six. What perplexed After my euphoria of passing the examination had me was that on the very day the names of students died down, I woke up to the reality the following day on bursary came out at CBU, a list of successful applicants at the University of Zambia also come out and I was among the people that were given a place in the School of Humanities. I was put on the horns of a dilemma because I had to choose between these two high caliber institutions. I choose CBU. My decision was based on going for a course that was close to my heart.

My journey at CBU hasn’t exactly been easy but so far so good. I have firm belief that it will definitely pay off at some day. I started my first year in 2016 and I am in my final year. I have always been focused, and goal oriented though some of my goals weren’t initially realistic but they at least helped me in so far as staying focused was concerned. Growing up, I underwent a lot of temptations. For instance, many girls of my age in my neighborhood had boyfriends and they expected me to follow suit. I however vowed not to be swayed by things that were not helpful.

Luckily, there were some of my friends who realized the importance of school through me and are doing everything possible to stay away from illicit practices in order to achieve their future dreams. I must also take this opportunity to applaud Government for encouraging teenagers who fall pregnant while in school to go back to school through its re-entry policy. This policy is a welcomes move as it promotes the sagacious words: “It is possible to achieve ones future dreams when one is determined, focused and always puts God first “.

An exception applies during emergency situations when oxygen is required, or when the person could be endangered by wearing a mask, or when a crew member authorizes the removal of a face mask in cases of special needs or unforeseen circumstances or when they are eating, drinking or taking oral medications. In addition, the following exclusions apply: an infant 2 years or less, a person with difficulty breathing (not related to COVID-19), a person who is unconscious, and a person who is unable to remove their face mask without assistance. • Use of hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
