    A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

    Smythe-Wood Newspaper Index – “A” series – mainly Co Tyrone Irish Genealogical Research Society Dr P Smythe-Wood’s Irish Newspaper Index Selected families, mainly from Co Tyrone ‘Series A’ The late Dr Patrick Smythe-Wood presented a large collection of card indexes to the IGRS Library, reflecting his various interests, - the Irish in Canada, Ulster families, various professions etc. These include abstracts from various Irish Newspapers, including the Belfast Newsletter, which are printed below. Abstracts are included for all papers up to 1864, but excluding any entries in the Belfast Newsletter prior to 1801, as they are fully available online. Dr Smythe-Wood often found entries in several newspapers for the one event, & these will be shown as one entry below. Entries dealing with RIC Officers, Customs & Excise Officers, Coastguards, Prison Officers, & Irish families in Canada will be dealt with in separate files, although a small cache of Canadian entries is included here, being families closely associated with Co Tyrone. In most cases, Dr Smythe-Wood has recorded the exact entry, but in some, marked thus *, the entries were adjusted into a database, so should be treated with more caution.   • Clonoe Family Fun and Information Day Children and Their Families From
    Clonoe Family fun and information day Children and their families from Clonoe and the surrounding town lands attended a family fun and information day in Clonoe Community Centre recently. There were many representatives from the statutory, voluntary and community sector in attendance to help highlight the range of services available across the local area, including: Employers for Childcare, Early Years, Parenting NI, Home-Start, Southern Health and Social Care Trust’s Health Promotion (Armagh and Dungannon), Volunteer Now and Capper Fuels. The children enjoyed the activities on offer such as balloon modelling, face painting and creative dance! And there were delicious refreshments available which were donated to the event from Quinfresh, Supervalu (Coalisland), Mulrine’s (Ballybofey), Springisland (Coalisland) and Newell Stores (Coalisland). Their kind donations were gratefully received. What’s more, children and adults alike were able to fill their reusable shopping bags (kindly contributed by the Consumer Council) with freebies including toothpaste and information leaflets donated by McCann’s Dental Surgery and the Community Health Clinic, story books from DELTA as well as flexible Frisbees from Early Years, not to mention the ever popular reflective bands and stress balls from Mid Ulster Council. This occasion proved to be extremely worthwhile for Orla Hughes and family in particular as they won £50 of oil stamps from Mid Ulster Council in the free prize draw! This event was organised by a subgroup within Dungannon Locality Planning Group which is part of the “Children’s and Young People’s Strategic Partnership” (CYPSP). This sub-group included Alice Campbell (Clonoe Rural Development Agency), Joanne McCourt (Belfast Central Mission), Ciara Burke (Mid Ulster District Council), Lynsey Arthurs (Start 360), Lorraine O’Neill (DELTA), Jacqueline Connolly (SHSCT), Annie Clarke (CYPSP), and Nuala Haughey (CYPSP).

    A SOCIETY IN TRANSITION: THE PROTESTANT COMMUNITY IN TYRONE 1836-42 DARAGH EMMETT CURRAN THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PH.D DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: PROFESSOR RAYMOND GILLESPIE SEPTEMBER, 2010 A society in transition: The Protestant community of County Tyrone 1836-42. Daragh Emmett Curran This thesis deals with the transition that was taking place in Protestant society in the immediate pre-famine period in County Tyrone. It explores how this community, at all social levels, reacted to the changes that were occurring and which were considered detrimental to its position of dominance in society. These changes had the potential to dramatically affect the traditional paternalistic relationship that bound the lower classes to their social betters and this study examines how this relationship survived through economic recession, changes in law and order, increasing concessions being granted to Catholics, lessening government support for the Protestant Church, and the suppression of the dominant Protestant association of the time- the Orange Order. The Order played an integral part in the lives of many Protestants and was an organization that transcended the class divide. Because of this, it becomes the pivot around which this work revolves as the Order, with its wide-stretching network, helped maintain the patriarchal relationship that bound the classes together. It is also a useful tool through which to examine attitudes towards law and order within the Protestant community as changes within this area, especially within the magistracy, affected the upper classes, the very people that the lower classes looked to for guidance.

    THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

The Proposer of a Motion or of an Amendment thereto may speak for five minutes, but not more than five minutes. 2. A Delegate speaking to a Motion or an Amendment must not exceed three minutes. 3. The Proposer of a Motion or of an Amendment may speak a second time for three minutes before a vote is taken, but no other Delegate may speak a second time to the same Motion or Amendment. 4. The Chairman may, at any time he considers a matter has been sufficiently discussed, call on the Proposer for a reply, and when that has been given a vote must be taken. 5.
