Foot-Stirring Feeding Behavior in Herons
FOOT-STIRRING FEEDING BEHAVIOR IN HERONS BY ANDREW J.MEYERRIECKS PECULIAR type of feeding behavior, described by various authors as A “stirring,” “scraping,” “raking,” and so on, has been recorded for several species of herons and other birds (see, for example, Rand, 1956). Briefly, the feeding heron extends one leg and vibrates or quivers it, especially the foot, then stabs at any prey that darts from the disturbance. The purpose of this paper is to describe my observations of this behavior in three North American heron species, and to give several examples of apparent “footedness” (i.e., preference for one foot while foot-stirring) in these same species. My observations concern the Snowy Egret (Leucophoyx &la), Reddish Egret (Dichromanassa rufescens), and the Louisiana Heron (Hydranassa tricolor). All three species were observed in Florida Bay and around the Laguna de la Joyas, near Puerto Arista, Chiapas, Mexico. Additional observations of the Snowy Egret were made on Rulers Bar Hassock, Jamaica Bay, western Long Island, New York, and near Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. USE OF THE FEET Snowy Egret.-In Florida Bay, the clearness of the water and the relative tameness of this species offered exceptional opportunities to see the feet during this behavior. The whole body, particularly the extended leg, vibrates, and these movements seem to impart a stirring motion to the foot. Usually the bird stirs the substrate, but on several occasions I could clearly see individual birds stir the foot above the surface of the mud, not in it. The bright yellow toes of thula are sharply set off from the black legs, and when one of these egrets stirs above the substrate, I get the impression that it is using its foot as a lure. -

We saw plenty of wildlife and often had it to ourselves with no other vehicles present – a nice feature of these less-visited places. It was particularly dry at Ruaha and the Great Ruaha River was reduced to a few pools. We saw some very exciting wildlife including hundreds of Crocodiles and Hippopotamus, many Greater Kudu and Elephants, 23 Lions, two Leopards, five Cheetahs and two African Civets. Mammal spotting was generally the order of most days with birds as a bonus. There were some very keen mammal observers in the group resulting in a list of 34 species of mammal. 170 species of bird were recorded including some very special ones of course, with highlights being Black and Woolly-necked Storks, Malagasy Pond Heron, Martial, African Fish and Verreaux’s Eagles, Grey-crowned Crane, White-crowned Lapwing, three species of roller, four of kingfisher and five of bee-eater. -

Kakadu Nature's Way 5 Day 4 Night
5 DAY KAKADU NATURE’S WAY 5 day 4 night accommodated DRY SEASON 2013 (May to November) ITINERARY Join us for a five day four night Mary River, Kakadu and Litchfield ‘Nature's Way’ experience. Nature's Way is the description used for the triangular route from Darwin to Jabiru to Pine Creek and return to Darwin that takes you through the best of Kakadu National Park and then the tropical savannah woodland along Stuart Highway and back to Darwin. We start with a day in the Mary River region and visit Litchfield National Park on day five’s return journey. This tour start with an early pick up from your accommodation in Darwin. Included are all touring costs, Kakadu National Park entry fees, breakfast, lunch and two course dinner. Accommodation is comfortable room with queen and single bed, ensuite and air-conditioning. Cold water, tea, coffee and snacks are available at any time. Also included is a Yellow Waters cruise at Cooinda. This tour is only available as a private charter. Maximum is 6 people. DAY 1 - DARWIN to MARY RIVER PARK 6.00am Pick up from Darwin accommodation Sunrise at Beatrice Lagoons. This is our first stop and we watch Magpie Geese, Pied Heron, Whistling-ducks, Intermediate Egrets and many water and forest species flying overhead en route from the their night roosts to their day feeding areas. After a brief comfort stop at Corroboree Park Tavern we spend the rest of the morning exploring savannah woodland country down the Marrakai track. Our number one target is the rare and spectacularly beautiful Gouldian Finch. -

Northern Territory, Top End Ian Reid and Paul Coddington, 7-16 Aug 2020 Preamble Six or seven years into our Australian sojourn I still had a few birds to collect in the south, but lifers close to home were becoming harder and harder to come by. In contrast, the far north still held bags of new birds. In fact even in pre-birding days growing up in Perth I had never been much beyond the Tropic of Capricorn, so there are vast swathes of Australia waiting for me to explore. In both 2018 and 2019 I had tentative plans to go to NT, but those plans were never realised. In 2020, I had a trip to Peru with UK birding mate Steve lined up, but that was cancelled in June because of covid. With very little birding in the first half of the year largely because of lockdown in SA, and my main birding event for the latter part cancelled, I began to wonder if I’d get any birding at all in 2020. But by early July the signs were good that SA, NT, Tas, WA, and maybe Qld had got their covid outbreaks under control and restrictions and border controls started to relax. The date for opening the NT border was set to 23rd July and I hatched a plan for a week of Top End birding in August once the border had opened and flights resumed. Paul Coddington, my traveling/birding companion on various SA twitches and a couple of outback camping trips, had birded NT in 2014 but missed quite a bit of stuff, so he was keen to join me. -

Species pictured are highlighted RED. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-0514 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report South Africa: October/November 2015 INTRODUCTION The beauty of Tropical Birding custom tours is that people with limited time but who still want to experience somewhere as mind-blowing and birdy as South Africa can explore the parts of the country that interest them most, in a short time frame. South Africa is, without doubt, one of the most diverse countries on the planet. Nowhere else can you go from seeing Wandering Albatross and penguins to seeing Leopards and Elephants in a matter of hours, and with countless world-class national parks and reserves the options were endless when it came to planning an itinerary. Winding its way through the lush, leafy, dry, dusty, wet and swampy oxymoronic province of KwaZulu-Natal (herein known as KZN), this short tour followed much the same route as the extension of our South Africa set departure tour, albeit in reverse, with an additional focus on seeing birds at the very edge of their range in semi-Karoo and dry semi-Kalahari habitats to add maximum diversity. KwaZulu-Natal is an oft-underrated birding route within South Africa, featuring a wide range of habitats and an astonishing diversity of birds.
