OUR OPINION The mayor’s future ayor Stephen M. Witt embarrassed him- self, along with our town, when in January M2017 he climbed into his SUV in a stupor, cranked the ignition and then got out again, for- getting he had already put the vehicle in gear. The unmanned machine lurched into Lake DeSoto. He pleaded no contest to DUI and agreed to a year’s probation and loss of his license for six months (though it was soon reinstated for purposes of work). But there was more to come. Court papers made public last month show Witt admitted to driving drunk on at least 50 occasions prior to January 27, 2017, and said he had tried to quit drinking at least 20 times. Further, he denied having a drinking problem and said his schedule did not permit substance abuse counseling or alcohol monitoring. That was the breaking point for many. CHICAGO (AP) — Jabari Parker and the Chicago Bulls agreed Saturday to a $40 million, two-year contract, bringing the talented and oft-injured forward to his hometown team. Agent Mark Bartelstein confirmed the deal shortly after the Milwaukee Bucks rescinded their qualifying offer. That made Parker an unrestricted free agent, clearing the way for him to join the rebuilding Bulls. Forward Channing Frye returning to Cavaliers

CLEVELAND (AP) — Channing Frye has agreed to re-sign for next season with Cleveland, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday, adding that the 35-year-old will get the $2.4 million veteran’s minimum contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been signed. Yahoo Sports first reported the move. Frye won a championship in his first season with Cleveland, but the club trad- ed him in February to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a massive roster over- haul that helped the Cavs get back to the Finals. Photos by JEN CHASTEEN/Special to the Reporter Former Columbia High star and current Miami Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil held a two-day free camp over the weekend. Friday’s session included kids ages six to 11 while Saturday featured kids ages 12 and up. TUNSIL Continued From 1B said. “I could do a fundrais- er, I could do a boys and girls club, but my biggest thing is always giving back because I never had nobody give back when I was young.” The camp featured boys and girls of all ages. Day 1 included kids ages 6 to 11 while those ages 12 and up took part in the second day. Day 2 saw kids participate in head on in 7on7 drills as well as other activates. Tunsil says his two years holding the camp has helped him reflect on his time as a child in Lake City, especially considering his football career began in Memorial Stadium at the age of eight. “I just wanted to keep around football because I’m also playing football,” Tunsil said. “But the camp is for the kids to come out and see what they can do, let them have fun, let them run around and just have some free time to do what- ever they want.” Several people assisted Tunsil during the camp, including family, coaches and former teammates. Countless volunteers also helped Columbia County recreation director Mario Coppock and event coordi- nator Adee Farmer put the camp together with Tunsil. Equipment, T-shirts, lunch were all provided to the kids in attendance. Lake City Middle also required its football players to attend the second day, helping the camp’s num- bers rise from a year ago. “I walked away from the camp and asked the par- ents how it was and they said it was great and that’s what it’s about,” Farmer said. It’s about the commu- nity here and the kids.” Tunsil also hopes to put on an event in South Florida in the near future. “I actually want to do something in Miami. I don’t know what yet,” Tunsil said. “I was talking to one of my boys, Fahn Cooper, who actually played at Ole Miss with me. I was thinking of doing like a basketball thing just to get involved with the communi- ty down there.” Prior to being drafted 13th overall by the Dolphins in 2016, Tunsil was an All- American at Ole Miss after being recruited as a five-star prospect out of Columbia. Tunsil made the NFL All- Rookie Team in 2017 at left guard before moving over to left tackle last season. The Dolphins open train- ing on July 25 and Tunsil has big goals for his third season in the league. “I’m trying to get it done. I hope we get that Super Bowl ring. I’m trying to have a little ring on my fin- ger,” Tunsil said.

With a small Tuesday recep- tion, Shands Lake Shore Regional Medical Center began a new chap- ter in it’s efforts to provide first rate health care. Late that afternoon, it officially dedicated the combined cardiolo- gy and general surgery facility, at what was previously the office of Dr. Tommy Randolph. Dr. Thomas Salvucci and Dr. Edwin Gonzales will now occupy this area. “We just thought it would be good to have our two specialists in one location,” said Lynn Witt, direc- tor of Physician Practices. Lake City Mayor Stephen Witt, Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter, Chamber Director Denille Decker and a number of others were in attendance at the event, which feature catered food and an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:15 p.m. The new facilities reflected a “total remodel.” “We’re making things more efficient and convenient for the patients,” said Linda Silecchia, marketing director for Shands Lake Shore. In Gonzales’s words, the new facility is “open for business.” “This facility will help us pro- vide easier and faster care for the patients, including the latest tech- nology in robotic surgery and more than 30 years in treating patients Photos by STEVE WILSON/Lake City Reporter with breast cancer,” he said.
