  • Water Hardness
Water hardness Northumbrian Water is responsible for supplying a reliable source of safe, clean, drinking water. The majority of the company supply area is soft to slightly hard. Why some water is hard If your water comes from underground limestone or chalk rocks, or contains a proportion of groundwater, then the chances are that it is hard. The hardness is caused by the presence of minerals dissolved from the ground and rocks by the water. Northumbrian Water is compliant with the appropriate regulations and has no plans to introduce softening to hard water areas. Please find below a PDF document of the water hardness for the Northumbrian Water area, along with the measurement of hardness in degrees Clarke, for use with dishwashers and washing machines. You can check out how hard the water is in your area here by viewing the harness zones. What does this mean for my appliances? If your water is hard you will notice that your kettle and other water heating appliances become furred up with a white scale. You may also find this scale in your bath, sink and shower. It isn't harmful but can be a bit of a nuisance. Hard water can also affect appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and steam irons. If you are installing a new dishwasher, your plumber may ask you for the hardness of your water. If the manufacturer’s instructions show hardness using a different factor, you can convert the values as follows: x 2.5 = calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mg/l x 0.174 = Degrees Clarke Total hardness (as mg/l Ca) x 0.25 = French Degrees x 0.142 = German Degrees We do not change the natural hardness of the region’s water through treatment, it is left to the customer, either domestic or commercial, to decide whether artificial softening is the right choice for them.

  • Northeast England – a History of Flash Flooding
Northeast England – A history of flash flooding Introduction The main outcome of this review is a description of the extent of flooding during the major flash floods that have occurred over the period from the mid seventeenth century mainly from intense rainfall (many major storms with high totals but prolonged rainfall or thaw of melting snow have been omitted). This is presented as a flood chronicle with a summary description of each event. Sources of Information Descriptive information is contained in newspaper reports, diaries and further back in time, from Quarter Sessions bridge accounts and ecclesiastical records. The initial source for this study has been from Land of Singing Waters –Rivers and Great floods of Northumbria by the author of this chronology. This is supplemented by material from a card index set up during the research for Land of Singing Waters but which was not used in the book. The information in this book has in turn been taken from a variety of sources including newspaper accounts. A further search through newspaper records has been carried out using the British Newspaper Archive. This is a searchable archive with respect to key words where all occurrences of these words can be viewed. The search can be restricted by newspaper, by county, by region or for the whole of the UK. The search can also be restricted by decade, year and month. The full newspaper archive for northeast England has been searched year by year for occurrences of the words ‘flood’ and ‘thunder’. It was considered that occurrences of these words would identify any floods which might result from heavy rainfall.

CLEADON TOWER, CLEADON, SOUTH TYNESIDE, TYNE AND WEAR HISTORIC BUILDINGS RECORDING Summary As part of the Cleadon Village Atlas project, a team of local volunteers from the village joined together with members of the North East Vernacular Architecture Group (NEVAG) to carry out a programme of historic building recording at Cleadon Tower; a building at the centre of the village, parts of which were believed to date back to the 16th century or earlier. The property is thought to be the oldest surviving building in the village, and occupies a linear plot, running north to south from Front Street. This was one of the original medieval land plots set out when the village was established, probably in the 12th or 13th century. The present house is an L-shaped building comprising a north range - orientated north to south along the western edge of the land plot, with the gable end facing onto the street - and south range, running east to west.

Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre Health Profile (with specific reference to obesity and diabetes) / HIA South Tyneside Profile South Tyneside is situated on the South bank of the River Tyne on the North East Coast of England. It is the smallest of the five Tyne and Wear districts and covers and area of 64.43 square kilometres. There is a population estimate of 151, 316 (ONS 2005). South Tyneside has one PCT and is the smallest metropolitan borough in England. It lies within the Northumberland, Tyne & Wear Strategic Health Authority (SHA) area. South Tyneside is an area which has seen a decline in its traditional industry and suffers from significant socio-economic deprivation. South Tyneside‟s main industries historically were shipbuilding and coal mining, however the last shipbuilder (Redheads) closed in 1984 and the last coalmine (Westoe Colliery) closed in 1991. In 2001 the service industry was the largest sector of the local economy employing 63% of all workers. Demographic Profile In June 2008 the Office of National Statistics released new population projections (SNPP 2006), which replace SNPP 2004. Earlier estimates of population change in South Tyneside (SNPP 2004) predicted a sharp decline in the numbers of people living in the borough. The population was predicted to be just over 150,000 people in 2006 and to fall to 140,900 people in 2029. The new population projections (June 2008) outline a very different picture. The graph below outlines the current estimates. Rather than a sharp decline, the population of South Tyneside is expected to gradually increase from its current position of 151,000 today to 154,500 over the next twenty years.

  • Domestic Violence in South Tyneside: Incidence, Provision and Good Practice
Domestic Violence in South Tyneside: Incidence, Provision and Good Practice Marianne Hester, Nicole Westmarland and Jeannine Hughes 2001 The International Centre for the Study of Violence and Abuse in association with Tyne and Wear Health Action Zone CHAPTER ONE - INTRODUCTION South Tyneside is an area characterised by social deprivation, high unemployment and little ethnic diversity. Data gathered by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (1991) shows that South Tyneside has a total population of 154,697, of whom 48% are male and 52% are female. Most of the residents are white (98.4%), and unemployment is higher than in its surrounding areas, at almost double the national average. Around a quarter of the unemployed are young people between 18 and 24 years old. Until now, no research has been conducted that has focused specifically on domestic violence in South Tyneside. The South Tyneside Domestic Violence Forum states as one of its major Strategic Objectives a reduction in the number of incidents of domestic violence. Information on current incidence and prevalence of domestic violence as well as effectiveness of services in place is an essential pre-requisite to the achievement of this objective. Domestic violence accounts for one quarter of all violent crime (Mirrlees-Black, 1999), and is estimated to effect one in four women at some point in their lives (British Medical Association, 1998). On average, one woman every three days in England and Wales is killed by a violent partner or ex-partner (Mirrlees-Black, 1999). The responsibility of local authorities to provide adequate services for women experiencing domestic violence has increased since the introduction of the Human Rights Act (1998).

  • Washington Heritage Offer - Discussion Paper
REPORT FOR WASHINGTON AREA COMMITTEE 7 JANUARY 2010 REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CITY SERVICES WASHINGTON HERITAGE OFFER - DISCUSSION PAPER 1.0 PURPOSE OF THE REPORT 1.1 The purpose of the report is for Members of the Washington Area Committee to discuss and recommend ways forward in relation to the Heritage agenda within Washington, in order that projects can be investigated and developed for the future. 2.0 BACKGROUND 2.1 Washington is located in the west of Sunderland and is divided into small villages or districts, with the original settlement being named Washington Village. Washington became a new town in 1964 and a part of Sunderland in 1974. Washington is now a diverse town offering wonderful countryside views, fascinating history, heritage and leisure attractions. 3.0 CONTEXT 3.1 Heritage is an area of continuing growth both across the region and for the City of Sunderland. Sunderland has a distinct heritage and there is a strong sense of pride across the city. This pride is based on our character and our traditions, including the distinct identity of specific communities and the cultural traditions of our people. A successful nomination which is currently being developed for World Heritage Status would allow the city to become a cultural heritage landmark as one of three World Heritage Sites across the region and 27 sites across the UK, allowing the city to prosper in areas such as economic development and tourism. 3.2 Heritage for the city is managed and delivered through the City Services Directorate, with two part-time heritage officers working to deliver the Heritage agenda.
