^ UIENTIUDRTH MILITARY ACADEMY ESTABLISHED IBBD - LEXINGTON, MO. HIGH SEHOOL AND JUNIOR COLLEGE •l»li!PT»«vlW WENTWDHTH'S PURPOSE It is the purpose of Wentworth Military Academy to provide the best conditions possible for the all 'round development of worthy boys and young men. To attain this high purpose, the Academy places greatest emphasis upon these four points: First, It is the Academy's aim to assemble only the highest types of students—deserving youths of good parentage—to assure wholesome associations and greater progress. Every pre caution is taken to keep undesirable boys—all those that might prove detrimental to others out of the Academy. Second, to employ only men of highest character and ability for Its faculty. It is not enough for a Wentworth faculty member to be merely a scholar and a splendid instructor. He must also possess a spirit of friendliness and a sincere desire to give kindly help whenever necessary. He must thoroughly understand the Innermost problems of boys—be patient with them—and be ready to serve each boy to the best of his ability. Third, to provide the very best equipment throughout every department to the end that every boy will have all those things necessary to his health and happiness and that none shall want for anything that will help him to make progress. Fourth, to provide a program for each day that will best serve the Interests of every student o ;f ; 3'^ o jtHi^ ^ # WEIVTWDRTH FROM THE AIR No. I. Administration Building, "D" Company No. 9. • A Short History of the Distinguished Shooter Program
A SHORT HISTORY OF THE DISTINGUISHED SHOOTER PROGRAM by Hap Rocketto September 28, 2010 Revision Four TABLE OF CONTENTS Forward…………………………………………………………………………………3 A Short History of the Distinguished Shooter Program………..………..…………4 Glossary………………………………………………………………………………..21 Appendix A-Eligibility for Excellence in Competition Leg matches……………....26 Appendix B-Distinguished International Shooter Badge Credit Points….….……27 Appendix C-Distinguished General and Flag Officers………………………….….28 Appendix D-Illustrations of EIC and Distinguished Badges………..………….….29 Appendix E-Illustrations of National Trophy Individual and EIC medals…….…..31 Appendix F-Distinguished Shooter Distribution by Affiliation…….……………….32 Appendix G-A Roster of Triple Distinguished Shooters…………………………...33 Appendix H- The First Class of National Guard Distinguished Marksman......….34 Bibliography and Reading List………………………………………………………..36 2 Forward The one immutable truth about historical research is that few things are certain. Even in the most meticulously kept records there is always some “I” left undotted and some “T” left uncrossed that casts a cloud of doubt on the „facts‟ at hand. Despite its military beginning, and there is no institution more conscious of scrupulous record keeping than the armed forces, there is missing information. As a result there are holes in the historical documents and records that tell the Distinguished program‟s story. In light of the nature of an imperfect record the reader must be aware that all numbers of Distinguished shooters and “firsts” listed in this work are used with this caveat and, as such, are subject to change as more detailed information becomes available. There are gaps in the story of the Distinguished program. Those little gaps make it impossible to write a complete and accurate story, and perhaps it is better that way.

The following year, as a newly commissioned Second Lieutenant, I was assigned to the First Howitzer Battalion, 14th Field Artillery, 2d Armored Division, where I spent six months waiting for-artillery school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Little thought was given to the topic until ten years later, when searching for a dissertation project, I discovered that the 2d Armored Division did not have a detailed narrative concerning its existence. This was especially disappointing because of the relation ship of the 2d Armored Division and General George S.
