Hiking Masada is one of everyone’s favorite memories – waking up before the sunrise and watching it from on top on the mountain is well worth it. While on top, be sure to look out for any remnants of ancient civilization – many rulers lived on top of Masada and you can still see the thermal baths as well as other parts of the fortification. “Masada was absolutely beautiful. It was amazing to look out over the mountain and see the Dead Sea spreading out before us.” Teddy Owen DEAD SEA The Dead Sea, which tends to be one of the main attractions during Birthright, is also known as the Salt Sea. It borders Jordan to the east and Israel to the west and is earth’s lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is comprised on 34.2 percent salt, making it one of the saltiest bodies of water and inhospitable for sea life (hence the name). Because of the high concentration of salt, anyone can easily float in the Dead Sea, making it a very fun and exciting experience for any visitors. When visiting the Dead Sea, people typically cover their body with the mud before going into the water. There are changing areas (with showers) by the Dead Sea, but nothing extremely glamorous. Additionally, for those who are interested, there is a store that you can buy AHAVA products, which are products made of minerals from the Dead Sea. “The Dead Sea was my favorite part of the trip - I easily could have spent all ten days there. The area was beautiful and the Sea was a perfect temperature - we’d had a couple days of rain surrounding our scheduled Dead Sea trip and there was a slight chance we weren’t going to be able to go in the sea - the weather held up though and it was one of my favorite days on Birthright!” Savannah Karmen-Tuohy 10 THE WESTERN WALL YAD VASHEM The Western Wall is the holiest Yad Vashem is the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem. Seeding Controversy: Did Israel Invent the Cherry Tomato? Abstract This research brief explores the controversial history of the cherry tomato and analyzes its role in the construction of Israel's national identity. Since 2003, mentions of Israel having “invented” the cherry tomato have appeared in both Israeli and international media. However, such claims have sparked outrage on various blogs and websites, and questions have been raised about the veracity of Israel's claims—as well as about the true origin of the cherry tomato. I explore the history of the cherry tomato, tracing mentions of it from the Renaissance period to modern times. In addition, I clarify the assertions of Israeli scientists credited with the development of the cherry tomato—that their research transformed the cherry tomato into a commodity in the 1980s. Finally, I discuss the cherry tomato claim in light of the Israeli government's hasbara (Hebrew for “explanation”) efforts, which attempt to counter negative images of Israel in the international press. While much previous scholarship on food and nationalism has focused on the relationship between the cultivation, preparation, or consumption of a food and the construction of a national identity, the present work focuses on the relationship between the food's invention narrative and national identity.

WESTERN WALL ַה ּכֹו ֶתל ַה ַּמ ַעָר ִבי The Western Wall, known as the Kotel, is revered as the holiest site for the Jewish people. A part of the outer retaining wall of the Second Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, it is the place closest to the ancient Holy of Holies, where only the Kohanim— —Jewish priests were allowed access. When Israel gained independence in 1948, Jordan controlled the Western Wall and all of the Old City of Jerusalem; the city was reunified in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Western Wall is considered an Orthodox synagogue by Israeli authorities, with separate prayer spaces for men and women. A mixed egalitarian prayer area operates along a nearby section of the Temple’s retaining wall, raising to the forefront contemporary ideas of religious expression—a prime example of how Israel navigates between past and present. SITES AND INSIGHTS theicenter.org SHUK ׁשוּק Every Israeli city has an open-air market, or shuk, where vendors sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing, appliances, and souvenirs. There’s no other place that feels more authentically Israeli than a shuk on Friday afternoon, as seemingly everyone shops for Shabbat. Drawn by the freshness and variety of produce, Israelis and tourists alike flock to the shuk, turning it into a microcosm of the country. Shuks in smaller cities and towns operate just one day per week, while larger markets often play a key role in the city’s cultural life. At night, after the vendors go home, Machaneh Yehuda— —Jerusalem’s shuk, turns into the city’s nightlife hub.

  • Shadows Over the Land Without Shade: Iconizing the Israeli Kibbutz in the 1950S, Acting-Out Post Palestinian-Nakba Cultural Trauma
Volume One, Number One Shadows over the Land Without Shade: Iconizing the Israeli Kibbutz in the 1950s, acting-out post Palestinian-Nakba Cultural Trauma Lior Libman Abstract: The kibbutz – one of Zionism's most vital forces of nation-building and Socialist enterprise – faced a severe crisis with the foundation of the State of Israel as State sovereignty brought about major structural, political and social changes. However, the roots of this crisis, which I will describe as a cultural trauma, are more complex. They go back to the pioneers' understanding of their historical action, which emanated arguably from secularized and nationalized Hasidic theology, and viewed itself in terms of the meta-historical Zionist-Socialist narrative. This perception was no longer conceivable during the 1948 war and thereafter. The participation in a war that involved expulsion and killing of civilians, the construction of new kibbutzim inside emptied Palestinian villages and confiscation by old and new kibbutzim of Palestinian fields, all caused a fatal rift in the mind of those who saw themselves as fulfilling a universal humanistic Socialist model; their response was total shock. This can be seen in images of and from the kibbutz in this period: in front of a dynamic and troublesome reality, the Realism of kibbutz-literature kept creating pastoral-utopian, heroic-pioneering images. The novel Land Without Shade (1950) is one such example. Written by the couple Yonat and Alexander Sened, it tells the story of the establishment of Kibbutz Revivim in the Negev desert in the 1940s. By a symptomatic reading of the book’s representation of the kibbutz, especially in relation to its native Bedouin neighbors and the course of the war, I argue that the iconization of the kibbutz in the 1950s is in fact an acting-out of the cultural trauma of the kibbutz, the victimizer, who became a victim of the crash of its own self-defined identity.
