A system of such information is critical to help travelers successfully choose a destination and plan their itinerary as well as to help them navigate once they arrive. As such, efforts to enhance a regional tourism economy must consider the strengths and deficiencies of existing wayshowing elements located along the full length of a byway corridor. The plan that follows assesses the current elements of the wayshowing system that exists throughout the Mount Evans Scenic and Historic Byway in Clear Creek County. Utilizing a “front-seat back-seat” approach, travelers unfamiliar with the area took to the road with a list of significant historical, cultural and recreational sites to locate. Neophytes in the front seat searched for signs, used digital devices, studied maps and asked for directions. Meanwhile, transportation and tourism specialists in the back seat recorded the navigational challenges for those “new to the byway” travelers in the front. This four person team set out to assess the wayfinding system on the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. An analysis of this formal assessment exercise, combined with the input of local officials, transportation and tourism specialists resulted in recommendations that can improve the ease of navigation for visitors and better capitalize on the potential for increasing travel-related revenues for the communities along the byway. Recommendations include: A. As specified in the corridor management plan, byway signage needs to show that the byway begins at the east entrance to town off I-70 and passes through the historic downtown, and then continues up SH 103 past the US Forest Service Ranger District Office. Signs on I-70 should reflect this in both directions. Byway signs need to be installed on the extension from Bergen Park to Echo Lake. B. The Visitor Center in Idaho Springs needs to be clearly and consistently marked for travelers both east bound and west bound because the Center serves as a gateway to the byway for I-70 travelers. C. Interpretation can help keep people on the byway longer, pointing out more things to see and do, thus contributing potential customers for local businesses in the town itself. The byway needs to presented as more than just a scenic drive. Improved interpretation can establish a clear link between Idaho Springs and the mountain, specifying recreational opportunities and overnight possibilities. 4 D. Travelers want choices – navigational and interpretive information should convey that there are multiple decision points that go beyond just driving up and down the mountain. Upper Chicago Creek Picnic area should be developed with interpretive exhibits related to the historic road and CCC construction. In addition, both Upper Chicago Creek Picnic Area and Echo Lake Park can be developed as family oriented recreational destinations. E. Correct inconsistent place names on signage and brochures, i.e. the Oh My God Road is also called Virginia Canyon Road and Canyon Road; the M. Walter Pesman Trail is also called Upper Mt. Goliath on some signs; and the Idaho Springs Library is also called the Carnegie Library. I-70 Signage The Mount Evans Scenic and Historic Byway is incredibly important to Colorado tourism, hosting travelers with widely divergent interests. Domestic and international travelers who come to Denver on business or for sporting events shift their schedules to fit in a half day or full day excursion to the mountains. Bicyclists in the thousands head to the foothills to gain some altitude training, motorcyclists seek tight turns on mountain roads, and families from the Denver metro area use the Denver Mountain Parks for family picnics and get-aways. Strengthening the existing wayshowing system can result in greater safety for cars, bicyclists, and motorcyclists alike. Enhancements to the excellent existing interpretive signage will deepen the understanding for visitors of historic and recreational assets.     The Mount Evans Project By Mo Ewing, CoNPS Conservation Committee Chairperson From his collecting visits in the 1950s, to an article he wrote in Aquilegia in August 1991, to the present day, Bill Weber has been a champion for Summit Lake on Mount Evans. In 1965 Bill nominated Summit Lake for designation as a National Natural Landmark because it was considered to be one of the finest examples of alpine tundra in the lower 48 states. For the last couple of years, Bill has urged CoNPS to take over his role as the champion of Mount Evans, expressing a particular concern regarding the presence of non-native mountain goats which the Colorado Department of Wildlife introduced to the area in the 1960s. Last January a group of volunteers met with Bill and Ron Wittmann to consider taking on Mount Evans as a long-term conservation project for our Society. Very quickly we realized that Ron and Bill were the only two people locally who knew much about Mount Evans and Summit Lake. Over the years Bill had brought many internationally renowned botanists to the lake to view its wonders, but otherwise very few people from our area were familiar with the plants and plant communities there. In 1924 the City and County of Denver purchased 160 acres around the lake creating Summit Lake Park and adding it to its Mountain Parks system. So in March some CoNPS volunteers met with Bob Finch, the Director of Natural Resources for Denver Parks and Recreation to discuss how we could work together to preserve Summit Lake.

    Mt. Bierstadt Field Trip Trip date: 6/17/2006 Ralph Swain, USFS R2 Wilderness Program Manager Observations: 1). The parking lot was nearly full (approximately 35 + vehicles) at 8:00 am on a Saturday morning. I observed better-than-average compliance with the dog on leash regulation. Perhaps this was due to my Forest Service truck being at the entrance to the parking lot and the two green Forest Service trucks (Dan and Tom) in the lot! 2). District Ranger Dan Lovato informed us of the District’s intent to only allow 40 vehicles in the lower parking lot. Additional vehicles will have to drive to the upper parking lot. This was new information for me and I’m currently checking in with Steve Priest of the South Platte Ranger District to learn more about the parking situation at Mt. Bierstadt. 3). I observed users of all types and abilities hiking the 14er. Some runners, 14 parties with dogs (of which 10 were in compliance with the dog-leash regulation), and a new- born baby being carried to the top by mom and dad (that’s a first for me)! Management Issues: 1). Capacity issue: I counted 107 people on the hike, including our group of 14 people. The main issue for Mt. Bierstadt, being a 14er hike in a congressionally designated wilderness, is a social issue of how many people are appropriate? Systemwide Recommendations Recreation Recommendations Background Today, those who visit the Denver Mountain Parks (DMP) represent a broad cross section of people in demographics, where they reside, and how far they travel to enjoy these mountain lands. Visitors to the Mountain Parks are cosmopolitan – a true mix of cultures and languages. With the exception of African-Americans being under- represented, the Mountain Parks reflect the same diversity of age and ethnicity as occurs at Denver’s urban parks. Although visitors to the Mountain Parks represent the spectrum, many come from low to middle income households. Typically one third of those who visit either a Denver Mountain Park or another county open space park are Denver residents. Another third reside in the county in which the park is located. The last third are visitors from other counties along the Front Range, visitors from other parts of the state and nation, and international visitors. Together, mountain open space lands owned by Denver, Jefferson County, Douglas County, and Clear Creek County are used recipro- cally. Together, they are a regional Front Range open space sys- tem where each county provides its own lands and facilities for the enjoyment of its own residents, recognizing that these lands are also enjoyed by all visitors.
