    CAFTA Falls Far Short of a Consensus on Trade By Rep. Adam Smith, Rick Larsen and Brian Baird Seattle Times: Opinion May 6, 2005 Our nation's economic and trade policy under President Bush has consistently failed to help workers both within the United States and internationally prepare for the challenges of the global economy. Domestically, the Bush administration's fiscal irresponsibility with tax cuts and unnecessary spending priorities has crippled our ability to help workers retrain and compete on the international stage. Globally, through its trade policy, this administration has done little to help workers overseas. With the the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the administration missed an opportunity to craft a pact that balances the need to open more global markets to American workers and businesses with the need to ensure that our workers and businesses can compete and prosper in those global markets. Our nation's trade policy is only one spoke in the wheel of economic policy. Yet, this administration has replaced that economic wheel with one spoke - trade. With an active global-trade policy coupled with an inactive economic-competitiveness policy, our businesses and workers will be left in the dust of economic progress. Because of these and other concerns listed below, we will oppose CAFTA when it comes to the floor of the House of Representatives. We support trade and know firsthand its critical importance to Washington state. That is why it is essential that we have a trade policy that provides American workers and businesses with real opportunities to grow and that expands and strengthens our economy.

    Courting the New Dems June 21, 2010 -- The 43 members of the New Democrat Coalition who last week sent a letter urging House-Senate negotiators to weaken the financial reform bill’s regulation of derivatives have received an average of 44.1 percent more campaign contributions from the financial services sector in the current election cycle than have the 25 coalition members who did not sign the letter, according to Public Citizen’s analysis of data from the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics ( www.opensecrets.org ). Just last week my office sponsored a seminar, in which six members of your office attended, focused on strengthening the partnership between the elections community and the United States Postal Service. As the chief election official of a state that votes more than 90 percent through the mail, I write out of concern about your request to Congress to eliminate the requirement that mail service is offered six days a week. Of the utmost concern for election officials throughout the country is the notion of eliminating postal service on Tuesdays. The majority of states in our nation hold elections solely on Tuesdays. Throughout the country, but particularly here on the West Coast where vote by mail is so popular, ballots are required to either be postmarked or returned by Election Day. In Washington, thousands of voters wait until right before Election Day to return their ballots. Eliminating mail service on Tuesdays would effectively place thousands of voters at risk of their ballots not being counted. Throughout the country many, if not all, states would run into the same problem, millions of citizens rely on the postal system to cast their ballot. As a nation, we have seen unprecedented reforms to our elections processes following several history making close elections. As an elections community, we have worked long and hard to return trust and confidence to our nation’s elections.
