We view this very much as a special case justified by the fine quality of Hannah Lightbody’s diary and of the editing by David Sekers. The information which he provides enables one to gain a unique insight in to Hannah Lightbody and her milieu. The diary and his documentation make a coherent volume and one which we felt could be made available for purchase by those who do not subscribe to the journal. We have absorbed most of the extra cost, but have also made a small increase in the price of the journal which we hope will be acceptable to our loyal subscribers. A trend which is increasingly apparent in our contributors is the increasing citation of electronic references. Eighteenth Century Collections Online in particular is an amazing resource, but increasingly libraries and record offices are also making manuscript resources available online. The Electronic Enlightenment project, associated with the Bodleian Library, is, amongst other things, making available over 53,000 letters and documents. Another approach, though complementary, is to edit some holdings and make them available online. The letters of Joseph Priestley held by Dr. Williams’s Library, the most significant collection of Priestley’s correspondence, have been edited by Simon Mills and are freely available online. This edition is much to be recommended, and an ideal preliminary is Simon’s article in this number discussing the work of Priestley’s first editor, John Towill Rutt. In many ways the proliferation of electronic resources makes researching much easier, and provides wonderful facilities for the interrogation of documents, although, on the other hand, serendipitous moments in a library or record office are hard to replicate sitting in front of a screen. MHF Main_journal_prelims:Layout 1 20/1/09 15:50 Page 6 Enlightment_dissent_book:Layout 1 20/1/09 15:52 Page 1 GODLINESS AND GODLIKENESS:CAMBRIDGE PLATONISM IN RICHARD PRICE’S RELIGIOUS RATIONALISM Louise Hickman* In the later seventeenth century, and throughout the eighteenth, one can detect a distinct trend in English religious thought towards rationalism, modernism and ‘enlightenment’. In recent years, it has become popular to perceive this ‘age of reason’ as a project of rationalisation, liberalism and increasing secularization; one which leads inevitably to nihilism and the collapse of modernity.1 By advancing an ethics of rationalist intuitionism, it is no surprise that Richard Price has been thought of as epitomizing the trend towards an ‘enlightened’ and modernistic world- view. His philosophy has been described as the ‘culmination of eighteenth century rationalism’,2 and Alasdair MacIntyre makes a forceful critique when he suggests Price as a prime example of an Enlightenment moralist who was forced to search for an alternative justification for ethics following the eighteenth-century rejection of Aristotelianism and Christian teleology.3 While it is fair to call Price a rationalist in many important respects, a closer reading of his work suggests that rather than abandoning a theological foundation for ethics, he has a firm commitment to teleology in the form of a deeply Christian Platonic doctrine of deiformity. Price’s rationalism is a deeply religious and theological rationalism informed by one particular strand of an evolving Christian Platonic rationalist * I would like to thank Douglas Hedley and Russell Re-Manning for helpful comments. Although the influence of Platonism upon his epistemology has been previously acknowledged,4 the debt owed by Price to the Platonic tradition has never been fully explored, especially in relation to his theology. A study of Price’s Platonic account of ‘becoming like God’ shows how adherence to this doctrine gives his account of reason and intuition a substantial theological (and Platonic) flavour and ensures the irreducible importance of virtue and character in his moral philosophy. A study of Price’s Platonism also draws a sharp distinction between his rationalism and that of the Socinians. This is important not only as a means of gaining a more accurate understanding of Price’s thought, but also for an appreciation of the difficulties of interpreting the Enlightenment as a unified singular project. I Price is not shy about declaring his enthusiasm for the Platonic tradition. In a letter to Lord Monboddo dated 1780, he declares: ‘I was always a warm admirer of Plato among the antients and of Cudworth and Clarke among the moderns.’5 He even goes as far as to avidly agree with Lord Monboddo’s estimation of Plato as a ‘Philosopher truly Divine’6 and he gives us evidence that he has read, among others, Alcinous, Plotinus and the Cambridge Platonist Henry More.7 He does not attempt to distinguish between the different philosophies of the Platonic tradition but exhibits a reading of Plato coloured by both the Cambridge Platonists and middle 4 Two recent articles by Martha K Zebrowski testify to the strong influence of Platonism on Price; ‘Richard Price: British Platonist of the eighteenth century’, Journal of the History of Ideas, 55 (1994), 17-35 and ‘We may venture to say, that the number of Platonic readers is considerable: Richard Price, Joseph Priestley and the Platonic strain in eighteenth-century thought’, Enlightenment and Dissent, 19 (2000), 193-213. Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity.

    About the Authors Moira Ferguson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and took a B.A. at the University of London and a Ph.D. at the University of Washing- ton. She is an associate professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and former chairwoman of women's studies. She has been a fellow of the Henry E. Huntington Library and has received an American Council of Learned Societies Award and an American Association of University Women Founders Fellowship. Her scholarly articles and reviews have appeared in such journals as Philological Quarterly, Minnesota Review, Signs, English Language Notes, Romantic Movement, Wordsworth Circle, Victorian Studies^ and Women's Studies International Forum. She is the compiler and editor of First Feminists: British Women Writers 1578-1799 (1983). She is currently preparing a study of women's protest writings in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Janet Todd, fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, was born in Llandrindod-Wells, Wales. She took a B.A. at the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. at the University of Florida.     Female Philosophy Refunctioned: Elizabeth Hamilton s Parodie Novel ELEANOR TY DURING THE 1790s, a number of English women writers used the novel as a means of conveying their endorsement or disap• proval of the ideals of liberty, equality, and the "rights of woman," the rallying cry of many female supporters of the French Revolu• tion of 1789. Among the most notable of these early "feminists"1 are Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Hays, who both wrote essays and tracts, as well as fiction, to argue for a better system of educa• tion for young girls, for providing employment opportunities for single women, and more generally for regarding the female sex as rational and moral beings capable of thinking rather than as deli• cate and dependent creatures.2 The debate between the women who advocated change and those who promoted the status quo has been examined by scholars under various topics, such as "the war of ideas" or the battle between the Jacobin and Anti-Jaco• bins.3 However, this controversy was by no means divided simply into two camps. As some recent critics — Claudia Johnson, for example — have pointed out, the distinction between the re• formers and the conservatives was not always clearly defined. Conservative and religious writers like Hannah More, for instance, as Mitzi Myers points out, called for a "revolution in female manners" just as radical writers like Wollstonecraft did. Gary Kelly, in his article on Jane Austen, observes that often both sides employed the same type of imagery or the same form, such as the first-person confessional narrative in their novels.

    AUSTRALIAN JOINT COPYING PROJECT THOMAS FYSHE PALMER Letters and papers, 1794-1862 Reel M391 Harris Manchester College Mansfield Road Oxford OX1 3TD National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Thomas Fyshe Palmer (1747-1802) was born in Bedfordshire and was educated at Eton and Queen’s College, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1771 but became dissatisfied with Anglican doctrines and in 1883 became a Unitarian minister. He preached in Dundee and other Scottish towns. He became acquainted with Joseph Priestley and other Birmingham radicals and was closely associated with a Dundee group, ‘The Friends of Liberty’. In 1793 he was tried at Perth for assisting to print and distribute a pamphlet on parliamentary reform written by a Dundee weaver. He was convicted of seditious practices and sentenced to seven years transportation. At about the same time, the political reformers Thomas Muir, William Skirving, Joseph Gerrald and Maurice Margarot were tried and convicted in Edinburgh and transported to New South Wales. They were known as ‘the Scottish Martyrs’. Palmer, Skirving and Margarot sailed on the transport Surprize, which arrived in Sydney in October 1794. Palmer’s account of the ill-treatment that he suffered on this voyage was published in London in 1797. In the colony he enjoyed a large measure of freedom and was able to engage ina trading concern with two free settlers, John Boston and James Ellis. They built a vessel, the Martha, which sailed to Norfolk Island and the islands of Bass Strait. Palmer was a close friend of George Bass and took a strong interest in maritime exploration.

  • Women's Textual and Narrative Power
    IN HER HANDS: WOMEN’S TEXTUAL AND NARRATIVE POWER IN THE ROMANTIC NOVEL by SARAH PAIGE ELLISOR-CATOE (Under the Direction of Roxanne Eberle) ABSTRACT This project examines the hybridity of the Romantic novel through the twin lenses of feminist and corporeal narratology. Romantic women novelists, in particular, manipulate narrative forms; these innovations often place a woman editor at the heart of the narratives and plots of novels, a role that reflects the increasing status of actual women editors during the period. To this end, Romantic women novelists emphasize the real and tangible nature of embedded texts and often put these embedded texts in women’s hands, a convention that I argue stresses women’s textual and narrative power. I survey how the embedded text legislates power for these women editor figures throughout the sub-genres of the Gothic, historical, and epistolary novels. Though my project is specifically a study of the narrative structure of the Romantic novel, I examine the long-ranging influence of these narrative experiments in the genre by linking these novels to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.     ‘A Moral Divinitie’: Emmanuel College and the Origins of Cambridge Platonism Samuel Kaldas University of Sydney Submitted to the Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. 1 Abstract: This thesis attempts to shed light on the origins of the movement known as 'Cambridge Platonism' through a close philosophical and historical analysis of three key figures belonging to Emmanuel College (referred to as the Emmanuel Three): Benjamin Whichcote (1609– 1683), Ralph Cudworth (1617–1688) and John Smith (1618?–1652). In particular, it focuses on the common Platonic outlook which the Emmanuel Three deployed against key tenets of the Calvinist theology of their Puritan colleagues at the university. It is argued that the Smith and Cudworth played a central role in the religious controversy that culminated in a tense correspondence between Whichcote and the Puritan theologian Anthony Tuckney in 1651. Part I of the thesis situates this analysis of the Emmanuel Three within the historiographical controversy around Cambridge Platonism. Part II gives an overview of the Emmanuel Three's intellectual context, with a particular focus on a Platonic current centred at Emmanuel College in the late 1630s. Part III turns on to the 1640s and identifies three key areas in which the Emmanuel Three present strikingly similar critiques of important Calvinist doctrines, with a secondary focus on the ways (often recognised by their opponents) in which these critiques reveal the influence of Platonism. Finally, Part IV explores the 'philosophical core' of the Emmanuel Three's philosophical outlook, providing a detailed analysis of their participatory religious epistemology and their conceptions of divine and human freedom.
