There are many reasons why I can think of to support this path. Primarily as it will affect me, it will create a clear, direct, and safe route connecting Belmont with Alewife Station, as well as the Minuteman Bike Path and a broader thriving bike network. The current path in this direction ends prematurely, and extending and connecting it would greatly increase the 'livability' of the community by providing safe active transportation options for more users! In addition, the path and railroad underpass creates safe routes to school for children. Thank you for your consideration and please support this project! KENNEDY SCHOOL, UNDER CONSTRUCTION. The Harvard Kennedy School aims to build students’ capacity for better public policy, wise democratic governance, international amity, and more. Now it is addressing its own capacity issues (as described at harvardmag.com/ hks-16). In January, as seen across Eliot Street from the northeast (opposite page), work was well under way to raise the level of the interior courtyard, install utility space in a new below-grade level, and erect a four-story “south building.” The project will bridge the Eliot Street opening between the Belfer (left) and Taubman (right) buildings with a new “gateway” structure that includes faculty offices and other spaces. The images on this page (above and upper right) show views diagonally across the courtyard from Taubman toward Littauer, and vice versa. LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR “To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.” Khalil Gibran Aspiration – the ‘A’ in the LEAP acronym – can simply be defined as the hope or ambition of achieving something of substance or importance for oneself. All of our young people should be able to articulate an aspiration, yet so many cannot. To be able to do this – articulate one’s aspirations – one needs agency. When we have agency, we can shape our thoughts, behaviors, experiences and choices in order to take control over our own life trajectories. We know we have that control when we create a set of goals and aspirations we are confident we can attain. Simply put, with agency and aspiration we can own our futures. How does LEAP staff build agency? We help our students explore their strengths, interests and values as well as opportunities for personal growth. By doing this, they take control of their own stories and don’t let themselves be defined by others. As trusted adults in their lives, LEAP staff sets high expectations and provides the encouragement and support to help our young people understand their possibilities and choices and then guides them to a vision for their future. At LEAP, students prepare an annual educational and career plan that lays out their goals and documents their aspirations as they move from middle school to high school and then to a LETTER FROM THE DIRectoR post-secondary degree or credential. -

Course Description Proficiency with gathering, analyzing and visualizing data is essential in journalism today as commodity content becomes increasingly ineffective in both serving the public interest and engaging audiences. This two-unit introduction to data journalism builds upon the reporting skills you developed in JOUR 207/307, Reporting and Writing I and II. Those courses focused on identifying and interviewing people as sources. This course introduces you to using data as a source, and “interviewing” datasets using quantitative analysis and data visualization tools. In the past, a “data story” was a big investigation produced by a separate data journalist team that included statisticians and coders. However, good reporting always did include using numbers to compare, contrast and other put facts and opinions into perspective. And “[n]ow, the fear of numbers marks a reporter as one who can only do part of the job,” according to Sarah Cohen, New York Times data journalist and the author of Numbers in the Newsroom, the primary textbook that we’ll use. In this frenzied media climate, it’s more important than ever for journalists to gather and analyze data themselves rather than rely on a source’s summary and interpretation. Thus, this course will start with building the fundamental skills you need to find and use data in basic news stories and beat reporting. -

Photojournalism For this section, we'll be looking at photojournalism's impact on shaping people's opinions of the news & world events. Photojournalism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. Photojournalists must be well informed and knowledgeable about events happening right outside their door. They deliver news in a creative format that is not only informative, but also entertaining. Timeliness The images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events. Objectivity The situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone. Narrative The images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to audiences. Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter, but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (e.g., physical danger, weather, crowds, physical access). -
