However, ice hockey goaltender helmet certification standards solely involve drop tests to a rigid surface. This study examined how the design characteristics of different ice hockey goaltender helmets affect head kinematics and brain strain for the three most common impact events associated with concussion for goaltenders. A NOCSAE headform was impacted under conditions representing falls, puck impacts and shoulder collisions while wearing three different types of ice hockey goaltender helmet models. Resulting linear and rotational acceleration as well as maximum principal strain were measured for each impact condition. The results indicate that a thick liner and stiff shell material are desirable design characteristics for falls and puck impacts to reduce head kinematic and brain tissue responses. However for collisions, the shoulder being more compliant than the materials of the helmet causes insufficient compression of the helmet materials and minimizing any potential performance differences.

A stick, a puck, a net. This is the game according to Ken Dryden; as Canadians, we have been weaned on it during "long northern winters uncluttered by things to do." Hockey has developed with the nation, and the country has changed with the game. These figures are the early pioneers of "Canada’s game" who cultivated a national pastime and shaped a national consciousness during the first half of the twentieth century. Aims To increase student awareness of the development of the game of hockey in Canada; to increase student recognition of the contributions made by hockey innovators; to examine their accomplishments in their historical context; to explore how hockey became Canada’s game over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; to critically investigate how hockey has influenced and been influenced by the political culture of Canada; to explore the contacts between hockey and commerce during the game’s early development; to question Canadian unease with American ownership and control of "our game." Background The history of hockey is enthralling, and so too is our earnest quest to determine the origin of Canada's game. Passions run deep in those who claim ownership of hockey's birthplace. Whatever the debates are about the origins of hockey, it is generally agreed that The Montréal Gazette recorded the first indoor exhibition of hockey in Canada on 4 March 1875 at Montréal's Victoria Skating Rink.

Rather than offering ritual contact with spirits of other worlds, they have been created to help ensure our safety in everyday occupations and some of life's pleasures, like sports, but also our survival in the face of life-threatening situations. Some were designed for impact resistance, others for protection against fire, explosives, civil disorder, diseases, radiation, chemicals, or warfare. Some, like underwater and space helmets, make an alien environment tolerable. Today's headgear is also worn as part of the drama with which we face the unknown; however, many of our unknowns are of a different type: hazardous wastes, outer space, chemical and nuclear warfare, terrorism. These head sculptures are portraits of our technological society. They are very real, and terrifying reminders of some of our Whether it be for ceremony, disguise, or protection, giving society's worst fears. For the most part, the reason they were form to our fears through myths, masks, and personifications created is not something on which one likes to dwell.

Within Canadian culture, where the sport of hockey is largely considered a mythologized component of identity, hockey players – such as the National Hockey League’s Sidney Crosby – are not only frequently represented in the daily media, but are also utilized in promotional and advertising campaigns. In this thesis, I qualitatively analyze media representations and the production of advertising featuring Sidney Crosby.
