From museum shows to air fairs to film festivals, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy with this season. Please note that some of the exhibitions listed here opened in January and February, but lucky for us they continue through the spring. January The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramon y Cajal and Baya: Woman of Algiers When: January 9–March 31 Where: Grey Art Gallery (100 Washington Square East, Greenwich Village, Manhattan) The Grey Art Gallery is putting on two fascinating and very distinct exhibitions this season. One displays neuroscientist Santiago Ramon y Cajal’s drawings of the brain, which are not only beautiful but remarkably clear and accurate. Eighty of his drawings, which date to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will be shown alongside contemporary visualizations of the brain. The gallery’s second exhibition is devoted to Baya Mahieddine (known as Baya), an Algerian artist who has yet to gain international recognition. Her vibrant, patterned gouaches Baya, “Femme et enfant en bleu (Woman and child in blue)” (1947) and ceramics drew the attention gouache on board, 22 3/4 x 17 7/8 in (Collection Isabelle Maeght, Paris © of André Breton, Henri Matisse, Photo Galerie Maeght, Paris) and Pablo Picasso. -

Speaker bios Bani Abidi is a visual artist working with video, photography, drawing and sound. She lives in Berlin and Karachi. Recent solo shows include: ‘Funland’, Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah; ‘Bani Abidi - They died laughing’, Gropius Bau, Berlin; ‘Bani Abidi - Exercise in Redirecting Lines’ Kunsthaus Hamburg, Hamburg and ‘Bani Abidi – Look at the city from here’, Gandhara Art Foundation, Karachi. Group shows include Karachi Biennial (2018), Busan Biennale (2018), Edinburgh Arts Festival Commissions (2016), 8th Berlin Biennial (2014) and DOCUMENTA 13 (2012). Her work is in the permanent collections of Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art NY, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Guggenheim Museum and the British Museum. Iftikhar Dadi & Elizabeth Dadi have collaborated in their art practice for twenty years. Their work investigates memory, borders, and identity in contemporary globalization, the productive capacities of urban informalities in the Global South, and the mass culture of postindustrial societies. Exhibitions include the 24th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil (1998); The Third Asia-Pacific Triennial, Brisbane, Australia (1999); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2000); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2000); Liverpool Biennial, Tate Liverpool (2002); Moderna Museet-Stockholm (2005); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2010); Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan (2012); Art Gallery of Windsor, Canada (2013); Dhaka Art Summit (2016); Office of Contemporary Art Norway, Oslo (2016); Lahore Biennale 01 (2018); and the Havana Biennial (2019). Iftikhar Dadi is an associate professor in Cornell’s Department of History of Art and Director of the South Asia Program, and a board member of the Institute for Comparative Modernities. He is the author of Modernism and the Art of Muslim South Asia (2010) and the edited monograph Anwar Jalal Shemza (2015). -
Heri Dono the World and I
FINE ART HERI DONO THE WORLD AND I Jalasveva Jaya Mahe, 2013 Flying Angels, 1996 Tyler Rollins Fine Art is pleased to host the first New York solo exhibition for Heri Dono, taking place from October 30 – December 20, 2014. Entitled The World and I, the exhibition features an overview of paintings, sculptures, and installations from throughout his thirty- year career. It follows a major mid-career survey of Dono’s work, The World and I: Heri Dono’s Art Odyssey, on view earlier this year at Art 1: New Museum in Jakarta, Indonesia, for which a 260 page catalogue was published. One of Indonesia’s most well known and internationally active contemporary artists, Dono has achieved iconic status both internationally and in his native Indonesia. Born in Jakarta in 1960, and a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta, Dono early on developed a distinctive style that came out of his extensive experimentation with the most popular form of Javanese folk theatre, wayang, a vibrant and eclectic art form that enacts complex narratives, often derived from ancient mythology, incorporating music with performances by two-dimensional shadow puppets as well as more lifelike wooden puppets and even human actors. Dono’s elaborate sculptural installations take inspiration from these puppets, bringing them into the contemporary world of machines, robots, and television. Often featuring unusual juxtapositions of motifs, a variety of moving parts, and sound and video components, these multi-media works make powerful statements about political and social issues as well as the often jarring interrelationship between globalization and local cultures. -

One of the latest generation of Cuban artists, Novo has already had occasion to show his work in important international events and venues such as the Havana Biennial, the Venice Biennale, MARTE Museo de Arte de El Salvador and the Liverpool Biennial. El peso de la muerte is a project specially conceived for Galleria Continua and brings together a series of new works in which investigation and procedure are key elements. Deeply poetic but also alive with questions, Novo’s work is situated in the context of the daily battles to get to the bottom of individual and collective identity. In his artistic practice he moves forward turning his back on the future, penetrating into the most hidden folds of history to offer us a fresh dialogue and a different point of observation. His works are often the result of joint efforts involving historians, cartographers, alchemists, botanists, musicians, designers, translators and military strategists, all engaged in the eternal struggle to gain freedom – individual and collective – , in the attempt to set into motion ideological mechanisms blocked by the rust and sediment that have accumulated over years of immobility and lethargy. -

Brooklyn, New York, and Queens Public Library Systems’ Culture Pass Resumes Free, In-Person Passes Passes to select cultural institutions throughout the five boroughs available now to library cardholders October 27, 2020 – Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the New York Public Library (NYPL, serving Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island), and Queens Public Library (QPL) today announced that their joint initiative Culture Pass – a citywide library program providing free access to library cardholders to cultural institutions across the five boroughs – has resumed service at select participating institutions, with limited capacity. Created in 2018, Culture Pass has provided nearly 110,000 free passes to museums, gardens, historical societies, performance venues, and other cultural institutions. As institutions across New York City reopen to the public, the City’s tri-library system is providing library patrons select opportunities to visit New York City’s unparalleled arts and culture organizations which have reopened with updated safety protocols in place, free of charge. Through Culture Pass, participating cultural institutions provide day-passes for library cardholders to reserve online and then present the printed or digital pass to gain free admission to a specified organization. As of November 1, 25 participating organizations including the Alice Austen House Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Kingland Homestead, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and New York Botanical Garden are offering in-person passes. Additional museums will offer passes on a rolling basis, as they re-open and are able to begin taking passes again. A SOLDIER IS TAUGHT TO BAYONET THE ENEMY AND NOT SOME UNDEFINED ABSTRACTION – A POCKET COMPANION TO THE EPISTEMOLOGY OF TARYN SIMON Michal Nanoru Birth of Confucius, Quince Tree, Siamese Twins and Man Being Hanged (Unable to Fill) The evening I was working on the layout for The Picture Collection in the Galerie Rudolfinum, Justice Antonin Scalia went to hunt blue quail and later that night he died. In the coming weeks the media stumbled to piece together a sensational, but strangely typical American story surrounding the death of the 79-year-old Supreme Court goliath during a presidential campaign: the luxurious Texas ranch famous for bird, bison and mountain lion hunting 40 miles from the nearest city; the absence of the U.S. marshals who usually provide protection for justices; the lack of an autopsy or even examination of the body; the unpaid-for trip on a private plane with members of a secretive society of elite hunters founded four centuries ago in Bohemia; the alleged pillow over the Justice’s face… For a brief moment the unexpected death of one the most powerful people in the world to define reality with words exposed America’s underbelly – something that is not necessarily hidden, just not always on the radar. The long shady corridors of institutions fundamental for society’s daily functioning and their extraordinary affiliation with behind-the-scenes power games, the fraternities of those-in-the-know, backdoors, and museum cabinets. It put light on otherwise the most boring proceedings offices churn out every day, their authority and their possible association with the inheritance of America’s violent and sectarian past and its often-surprising current lives. -

Using a range of media — including installation, painting, photography, sculpture, video, and textile — the artists confront history, identity, heritage, and ways of understanding the world at a time when truth is censored, borders reconfigured, mobility impeded, and civil liberties challenged. Bringing together myriad voices, the exhibition presents a meditation on the spirit of defiance expressed through art. “Clapping with Stones: Art and Acts of Resistance” will be on view from August 16, 2019, to January 6, 2020, and will feature works by Lida Abdul, Kader Attia, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Naiza Khan, Kimsooja, Pallavi Paul, Shahpour Pouyan, Ibrahim Quraishi, Nari Ward, and Hank Willis Thomas. Installed on the sixth floor of the Museum, the exhibition unfolds around Kimsooja’s site- specific installation “Lotus: Zone of Zero” (2019). -

ONE YEAR AFTER MASSIVE EARTHQUAKES, RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART HONORS NEPAL’S CULTURAL HERITAGE Educational programs, collaborative art exhibitions and #HonorNepal awareness campaign will bring institutions together to highlight Nepal’s significance as a source for sacred art New York, NY, April 19, 2016 — One year after earthquakes ravaged the region last April, the Rubin Museum of Art will honor Nepal’s people, art, and cultural heritage with a series of events and exhibitions. Last year, on April 25, 2015, devastating news emerged from Nepal as massive earthquakes caused high death tolls, injuries, and widespread destruction. Many historical sites and sacred art objects were lost, and the disaster has served as a reminder of the critical ongoing need to honor and preserve Nepal’s unique cultural heritage.
