The Word from Fr. Pat / La Palabra del Padre Pat / Słowo od Ojca Pat

What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him… Psalm 119:9

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am so grateful for the support of so many parishioners as we begin our #wearesaintmarys (We Are Saint Mary’s) capital campaign. As I have begun visiting with parishioners, they have lent so much support to attending to the very important issues we need to address. I am grateful, too, to those who have come forward to make pledges and contributions so far. Thank you all so much!

I wanted to share a list of parishioners who have volunteered to be part of our capital campaign leadership so far. Please know that this list is not closed! We are always looking for people to share the good news about our parish and advocate for a successful campaign. If you would like to be part of this wonderful group of people, please let me know.

Thank you again for your support of our parish. You know that I constantly give thanks to almighty God for calling me to be here at Saint Mary’s. I am so grateful that, for this season in my life, we get to be Saint Mary’s together!

Yours in Christ and His Blessed Mother, Father Pat Mulcahy, Pastor

We Are Saint Mary's).

BISHOP BLANCHETTE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Are you aware that the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (CCW) offers a scholarship?

The “Bishop Blanchette Scholarship Award”, a Fund supported by donations, was established in 1982 as a living memorial to honor our late Bishop Romeo Blanchette. Part of the criteria is: -Students applying must have a financial need. -Students must actively attend a Catholic parish in the Joliet Diocese with an active CCW. -Scholarship includes a one-time stipend to be paid directly to the high school based on funds available for the calendar year.

For an application packet, please call or stop by the SMI School Office, Religious Ed Office or the Parish Office during regular School Office Hours.

St. Mary Immaculate Parish School #SMISaysYes 815-436-3953 Calendar: • February 16 - 3rd grade in the Commons - Stop by and see what our 3rd graders are doing at St. Mary’s. • February 17 - No School - Presidents Day • February 21 - Fun Lunch

News: • On Thursday, February 20th several of the St. Mary’s students will experience being Teacher for a day. This day gives some students the opportunity to see what it’s like to be in front of the class and present information under the regular classroom teacher’s supervision. It’s a really fun day for the kids and “teacher”. This was made possible by a Galabration raffle for each classroom!

Junior High Service Day—Thank You! • Last Thursday our entire junior high went to Feed My Starving Children as their Valentine’s Service Day. The students and teachers worked side by side to complete as many boxes as they could to help those who are less fortunate. When asked about their experience, one student said “it makes me feel good to give back to those who are not as blessed as I am”.

St. Mary’s Students Mark the 100 Milestone The students and staff of St. Mary Immaculate School celebrated the 100th day of school on Monday, February 3, 2020. It was a great way for teachers to celebrate various math concepts that can be taught using the number 100! Many classrooms kept track with a visual timeline that wrapped around the classroom. Others often marked the days using coffee stirrers or popsicle sticks, ten of which become a “ten bundle” paving the way to counting by tens and ones. The activities of the day varied by grade level. The kindergarten created shirts at home and wore them that had 100 “items” on them. In class, they made crowns with ten colored strips with 10 stickers on each. They also stacked 100 cups on the table! Our first graders aged significantly that day by coming to school dressed like 100 year old people. They also used a computer program to take their photo and it showed what they would look like at 100 years old! Our second graders all had matching 100 day hats and glasses so they could see the world through the eye of 100. No matter how it was celebrated in each grade level, the students certainly realized the importance of the number 100. Wonder how many will make it to 100 years old?

Meet SMI’s Seminarian Intern...Tom Logue

My name is Tom Logue, and I am the seminarian intern serving here at SMI this Spring semester. I grew up in Hinsdale, IL and attended Catholic school almost my whole life before college. I studied for one year at University of before transferring to University of St Thomas in MN for college seminary. After college I took time off from formation and served as a youth minister for 3 years before returning to seminary. I am currently in my 2nd year of theology at Mundelein Seminary. In following Jesus’ call to priesthood, the call was always on my heart from the age of 5. Going through junior high and high school I pushed that sense of a priestly call away while I was going through a period of growing farther and farther from the Lord. Around the conclusion of high school, I woke up to the recognition of my own sinfulness and need for a Savior, and Jesus offered Himself to me in love and mercy. Within the context of His love He extended that offer of priesthood to me again, and I told Him that I would do whatever it is He asks of me. He is so good! I greatly look forward to serving all of you and learning all that I can from you—may God bless you!

F.Y.I. Daybreak Update

What is Daybreak? Daybreak is a homeless shelter located in downtown Joliet. The evening meals for the residents are provided solely by contributions prepared and served from the congregations of local churches and community organizations. This ministry at St. Mary’s has committed to supplying the dinner six times per year along with the provisions for breakfast the following day.

We need you! Since this is meant to be a parish ministry, we ask that everyone watch the weekly bulletin for the dates and times for each dinner. Please sign up to cook or donate to the hungry. It truly is a way to help those in need.

March meal Our next meal is Tuesday, March 3, 2020. The pick up time is 5:30 – 6:00 PM in the north parking lot of the church. We will be serving a pork chop dinner including baked potatoes, vegetable casseroles and salad. The sign up poster will be in the commons beginning Saturday, February 15th through Tuesday, March 3rd. Please check the poster for details. If cooking is not for you consider donating one of following: fresh fruit, salad, dessert, 2 liter bottles of soda, orange juice or fruit juice, dry cereal, hot cereal, eggs, bacon, tea, and coffee.

Thank you! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has cooked or donated food.

Questions? Feel free to contact Cindy Mayfield 815-370-8304, Donna Giancarlo 815-436-7166 or Linda Polnik 815-436-5069.
