The Shire of Leonora’s Australia Day event was held on Sunday, January 24 at the Leonora Aquatic and Recreation Centre. It was a great day with perfect weather for a swim. The event was attended by 217 people who were treated to a day full of free fun, including wet and dry inflatables, a photo booth, a food truck and ice cream van, lolly bags, face painting by Super Sarah, and live music from Marcus McGuire and Shannon Youd. A huge thank you to everyone who made the day a great success. The Shire would also like to thank the National Australia Day Council, the day would not have been possible without the support of their grants program.

CHILD CARE CENTRE NAME CHANGE The Leonora Child Care Centre is changing its name!

The Centre will now be known as Leonora Early Learning Centre.

The change of name reflects the provision by the Centre of the education and development of children as opposed to, simply, child care.

Leonora Early Learning Centre caters for the developmental needs of children from ages 1 to 5 years, and is licenced for up to 19 children. It was established in 2004 and is wholly operated by the Shire of Leonora under the authority of the Education and Care Regulatory Unit of the Department of Communities.

The Western Australian early learning system has changed over the last sixteen years and the standards required to be met are detailed under a rating and assessment process within the National Quality Framework (NQF) and covered bythe Education and Care Services National Law (WA) Act 2012 and the Education and Care Services National Regulations 2012.

Under the NQF Leonora Early Learning Centre must ensure that a program is delivered to all children being educated and cared for by the service that meets the standards. The standards look more and more towards a recognition of the early years as being critical for lifelong learning and wellbeing for children, particularly for the development of a child’s brain as it reaches 90% of the size of an adult’s by the age of five.

The philosophy of the centre and the goals and drive of its staff remain the same! They recognise that each child is an individual and supports this by not only promoting an environment free of cultural or gender bias but also by giving children opportunities for learning while encouraging their development through exploring, investigation and problem solving.

AUSTRALIA DAY AT LELC Australia Day is an important celebration for our children to help them understand who they are and where they belong, creating a sense of belonging and being for each child. During the week leading up to Australia Day the Leonora Early Learning Centre learnt that Australia is made up of many cultures and they learnt about the importance of respecting people from diverse backgrounds. On the day, they read stories and sang songs exploring Australian history, special places and traditions. The children learnt about well- known landmarks and created beautiful artworks depicting native Australian flowers such as the bottle brush, the grevillea and other Australian native plants. To top the day off they had a BBQ for lunch with Greek salad, Italian sausages and Pavlova for desert. Happy Australia Day from the Koalas, Geckos and Joeys!

Clean Up Australia Day

In Australia, each person produces 540kg of waste every year. This equates to a total of 67 million tonnes of rubbish countrywide. It’s estimated that each year 130,000 tonnes of plastic end up in waterways. We all need to be doing our part to ensure that these hundreds of kilos of waste that we produce are not ending up in the environment. We are lucky enough to live on this unique and beautiful area of land, we must keep it looking beautiful for future generations and keep it safe for the wildlife.

Sunday March 7th is Clean up Australia Day. Sandra Wheeler has registered an event again this year and she would love your support and help.

“Previous years have been tremendously successful, with lots of volunteers and lots of rubbish collected. It’s a way of trying to keep our town and its surrounds clean, getting everyone involved, and hopefully encouraging responsibility in rubbish disposal.” she said.

In 2020, 33 adults and 30 children collected 175 bags and a truckload of rubbish. Sandra is looking for volunteers for a variety of roles, including collecting rubbish, supervising teams of kids, set up of the collection site and recording items collected. Donations of items to use on the day would also be greatly appreciated.

The event starts at 9am. Groups will walk around the town streets and sites outside of town, and collect rubbish, which is then sorted, itemised and a detailed report completed. There is usually a sausage sizzle and drinks afterwards. It’s a great opportunity to get together with your friends and family and help clean up our special corner of the world.

If you or your business can help in anyway, please contact Sandra on 0423 698 000 or email [email protected]

Did You Know…?

PRESSED TIN

Tin ceilings were first manufactured and sold in North America in the mid 1800s as a more affordable option to imitate the look and elegance of the ornate plasterwork that was popular in Europe at the time. The use of tin ceilings really developed in the mid nineteen century when mass produced sheets of thin rolled tin plated steel became readily available in America.

Wunderlich is a well know Australian brand of pressed tin. This business was started in Sydney in 1887 by Ernest and Alfred Wunderlich. Skilled tradesman from Europe immigrated to Australia as the demand for this product grew. In 1893 zinc was replaced by steel as it was more economical. Branches of Wunderlich were opened in Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Launceston. T.W. Inghams and Sons, another distinguished pressed tin manufacturer in Australia were located in Adelaide. The business was formed in 1892 by Thomas Ingham, a fibrous plasterer. He was later joined by his two sons, Halbert and Theodore. Thomas retired in 1927 and Halbert continued successfully running the business until 1980 when it was purchased by a group of individuals who saw the need to preserve the old craft and heritage of South Australia’s older buildings. Heritage Ceilings and Adelaide Pressed Metal procured the original metal dies of panels, cornices, rails and miters in 2010. A treasure trove of forgotten history is being unearthed and all pressed metal products are being restored or reproduced to their original condition. Australian Pressed Metal is now the leading specialist company for heritage restoration producing original Wunderlich and Ingham designs.

A fine example of pressed tin ceilings can be seen in our local White House Hotel.

Then & Now

DOES THIS LOOK FAMILIAR? Below is a photo and article that was published in the Leonora Miner on Saturday, June 21, 1919 during the Spanish Flu outbreak that caused lockdowns, quarantine directives and travel permits.

THE LEONORA MINER, Saturday, June 21, 1919 Influenza Epidemic

During the week the number of people affected by the influenza epidemic has been lower than that recorded for the previous week, though a large number are still under doctor’s care and one or two fresh cases are reported daily. At present there are 23 patients in the State Hotel (now used as a hospital) under treatment, most of whom are progressing favourably, though two are classed as serious. One death occurred on Thursday evening—the patient being in a low state when admitted...Since the outbreak of the epidemic a number of visitors to the district have been forced to stay within the area, and are desirous of leaving the district...if a person entered into quarantine for a period of five days, and was then given a medical certifi- cate that he was free from the epidemic he would be allowed to depart. Acting under this information the Leonora Club premises were secured for a quarantine state to be opened there to-day. It is understood that some eight persons will submit themselves to quarantine. A charge of 10s per day will be made for those in detention….No charge is made for patients in the isolation hospital-the Government paying all expenses incurred by the patients.
