FIND US ON THE AT OR ON AT As this year’s Catechetical Sunday focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Vatican II Declaration of the Church’s Relation- ship with non-Christian religions, I thought that this article from Bishop Madden was appropriate to print. You can find the entire text on the bishop’s website www.usscb.org. - Fr. Pete The world we live in today and the world we seek to build for the future will only be successfully navi- gated using the increasingly critical instruments of dialogue and collaboration. The document entitled Nostra Aetate (NA), the Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non- Christian Religions, of the Second Vatican Council led the way for Catholics to foster interreligious dia- logue. The bishops at the Council say: The rejects nothing of what is true and holy in these religions. She has a high regard for the manner of life and conduct, the precepts and doctrines which, although differing in many ways from her own teaching, nevertheless often reflect a ray of that truth which enlightens all. (Second Vatican Council, Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions [Nostra Aetate], in Vati- can Council II: Volume 1: The Conciliar and Post Conciliar Documents, ed. Austin Flannery [Collegeville, Minnesota: Liturgical Press, 1996]) From Vatican II on, all Catholics have been exhorted to dialogue and collaboration with people of other faiths or, for that matter, of no faith at all, because we have the whole richness of humanity in common. We are in a common search for meaning. Christ came to save all people—as Francis famously said, even the atheists! We must not ignore others but rather encounter them and seek truth with them. We cannot just shut ourselves up in our churches. St. John Paul II, in his 1990 encyclical Redemptoris Missio, while insisting on the universal presence of the Holy Spirit, held that this does not mean that all religions are equal but that all religions bear the im- pulse of the Holy Spirit, found most fully in the Catholic tradition. Thus, we are not holding that all reli- gions are the same. In 1991, the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue listed four types of dialogue: (1) Dialogue of Life; (2) Dialogue of Action; (3) Dialogue of Theological Exchange; and (4) Dialogue of Religious Experi- ence. To have a productive conversation at any of these levels, we need certain basic qualities. Pope Paul VI said we need clarity; meekness—not proud nor offensive but honest and charitable, patient and gener- ous; trust; and pedagogical prudence—adapting our presentations to the sensitivities of the hearer so that we can communicate effectively. This brings me to the importance of listening. Conversation is something we engage in every day, almost without realizing it. But dialogue is more than mere conversation. Dialogue presupposes a keen intentionality in a critical conversation between two or more parties on issues of mutual concern and often disparity, with the hope of arriving to an agreed and amicable resolution or end. Dialogue is an art. And as an art, the first canvas of dialogue is the open space created through the act of genuine listening. Continued on Page Five...

… Continued from Page Two Listening is crucial to our relationships with one another and our relationship with God. The truly con- templative soul is the soul positioned before God in a profound state of listening—and receptivity. Open to the creative activity of grace, contemplative listening is linked to the building of an authentic culture of life, because it provides a sacred space where the grace of God is free to bring about some- thing new, to create and to infuse with life. The same can be said for our relationships with one another—our deepest communication takes place in a context of listening and receptivity, and it is in this context that the grace of God finds its greatest freedom to act. And these relationships—our relationship with God and our relationships with one an- other—are intertwined. God is often speaking to us through the other. Listening to one another can be a complex process. First of all, it requires attention. Yet attention can be hard. In my years as a clinical psychologist, I had to discipline myself to listen and to help my clients overcome their inner and outer distractions so that they might listen to me. Listening is not just with our ears. When we encounter one an- other in dialogue, we need to make a personal investment of our being. A distracted presence will not do. We must, as likes to say, walk with and encounter the other. We must make a commitment to the other and to the relationship. This requires a level of spiritual maturity. We need to root ourselves in our faith in God and devote ourselves to daily prayer. These are prerequisites to attentive listen- ing to the other. We must ask for divine help to listen and to understand. Bishop Madden was ordained a bishop for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 2005.

Father Pete and Alicia,

Attached please find the credit information detailing the forgiveness of debt for $388,315 that was provided by Bishop Conlon at the meeting on Tuesday night. Please note that we eliminat- ed your operating loan of $68,971.96 first as this was an interest-bearing loan. We did this be- cause presumably you would want to eliminate the interest burden. That left an additional $319,343 to be eliminated. We detailed the specific invoices that we eliminated so that you can eliminate the same ones from your books. We started with the oldest unpaid invoice and worked forward. Take care and have a nice weekend.

The Catholic Church Beatifies Blessed Stanley Francis Rother

‘May his heroic example help us to be courageous witnesses of the Gospel, com- mitting ourselves in favor of human dignity.’ Pope Francis said these words to- ward the conclusion of his Angelus address yesterday, Sept. 24, 2017, recalling that Stanley Francis Rother, was proclaimed blessed yesterday in City, Oklahoma. Pope Francis recalled that the missionary priest was killed out of hatred for the faith “for his work of evangelization and human promotion in

favor of the poorest in .”

Stanley Rother was born on March 27, 1935, in Okarche, Oklahoma, and died on July 28, 1981, in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. This Catholic and missionary priest was assassinated by a death squad during the Guatemalan armed con- flict. He was beatified as a . Born to a farm family, Stanley Rother was or- dained a priest at the age of 28, on May 25, 1963, for the Catholic Diocese of Tul- sa. In 1968, he arrived in Guatemala, in Santiago Atitlán, where he joined a small team, and began his mis- sion, especially with the Indian population of the Tzutuhil. The mission improved food and medical care, including the construction of a hospital.

Stanley Rother found himself alone in 1975 as a result of defections and forced returns to the . He celebrated five masses in four languages every Sunday, and he celebrated more than 1,000 baptisms a year. Beginning in the late 1970s, Fr. Rother also devoted himself to the struggle against the injustices committed against the Indians, creating enemies of his work and colleague.

On 23 October 1980, Gaspar Culan, a deacon with whom he worked, was kidnapped and probably mur- dered, and two other collaborators… and another in 1981. In January 1981, under the pressure of his pa- rishioners and in agreement with the civil authorities, Stanley Rother left Guatemala to return to Oklaho- ma. He stayed there for three months. In light of reports that his name would no longer be on the black lists of military factions, he returned to Guatemala for . On July 28, 1981, Father Rother was assassinat- ed. Three suspects were arrested on August 4 of that year.

The body of Father Rother was transferred to the United States, to Okarche, where he is buried. But, at the request of his former parishioners of Tzutuhil, his heart is kept under the altar of the church where he ex- ercised his priestly ministry. On October 5, 2007, his cause for and was opened at the diocesan level. And it closed on July 20, 2010, and transferred to to the Congregation for the Causes of . December 1, 2016, Pope Francis acknowledged the death “in hatred of the faith” of Fa- ther Rather, making him a martyr. He was proclaimed blessed on September 23, 2017, in Oklahoma, dur- ing a Mass presided in the name of Pope Francis by Cardinal , Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. 7-8 Octubre 2017: XXVII Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
