Introduction Over the course of evolution, a range of strategies have been developed by different organisms to produce unique materials and structures perfected for their specific function. This biological mastery of materials production has inspired the birth of the new discipline of biomaterials through biomimicry (Birchall, 1989). Chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora) are slow moving, bilaterally symmetrical and dorso- ventrally flattened molluscs that are commonly found on hard substrata in intertidal regions of coastlines around the world (Kaas & Jones, 1998). All species are characterized by a series of eight dorsal, articulating shell plates or valves, which may be embedded, to varying degrees, in a fleshy, muscular girdle (Kaas & Jones, 1998) (Figure 1). Approximately 750 living species are known, and while intertidal regions are home to the majority of chitons, a number of species can be found at depths of up to 8000m where they feed on detrital material (Kaas & Jones, 1998). J. Brook* A total of 358 species of molluscs (excluding pelagic species) is recorded here from coastal marine habitats around the northern Kermadec Islands. The fauna is dominated by species that are widely distributed in the tropical western and central Pacific Ocean. The majority of these are restricted to the tropics and subtropics, but some range south to temperate latitudes. Sixty-eight species, comprising 19% of the fauna, are thought to be endemic to the Kermadec Islands. That group includes several species that have an in situ fossil record extending back to the Pleistocene. -

Abstract: The first cases of anomalies in the number of shell-plates in Tonicia atrata (Sowerby II, 1840) are herein reported on the basis of three specimens from Zaratiegui Bay, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (54°50’53’’ S, 68°29’7’’ W): two cases of coalescence (one symmetrical and another one asymmetrical) and a case of hypomerism. The abnormal specimens bore less ctenidia than physiological conspecific specimens of similar size. The symme- trical coalescent specimen and the hypomeric individual were significantly wider (higher width/length ratio) than physiological specimens. Nevertheless, the reported abnormalities seem to have no effect on general growth, since the body size of the abnormal specimens were close to the largest physiological ones found in the same locality. Se registran aquí los primeros casos de anomalías en el número de placas en ejemplares de Tonicia atrata (Sowerby II, 1840), sobre la base de tres ejemplares hallados en Bahía Zaratiegui, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (54°50’53’’ S, 68°29’7’’ O): dos casos de coalescencia (uno simétrico; el otro asimétrico) y un caso de hipomerismo. -

Ferreira ABSTRACT Seventeen species of chi tons, one new, have been found in Barbados, the easternmost island of the Lesser Antilles: Lepidochitona beanii (Carpenter, 1857), Ischnochilon slriolatus (Gray, 1828), /. erythronotus (Adams, 1845), I. pseudovirgalus Kaas, 1972, I. bromleyi Ferreira, new species, Stenoplax limaciformis (Sowerby, 1832), S. boogii (Haddon, 1886), Ischnoplax pectinala (Sowerby, 1840), Ceratozona squalida (Adams, 1845), Chiton tuberculalus Lin- naeus, 1758, C. marmoralus Gmelin, 1791, C. viridis Spengler, 1797, Tonicia schrammi (Shuttleworth, 1853), Acanthopleura granulata (Gmelin, 1791), Acanlhochitona astrigera (Reeve, 1847), A. rhodea (Pilsbry, 1893), and Choneplax cf. C. lata (Guilding, 1829). One of these species, I. bromleyi, is endemic; four, I. striolatus, S. limaciformis, S. boogii, I. pectinata, range southward to Brazil; five, L. beanii, S. limacijormis. S. boogii, C. squalida, A. rhodea, occur in both Caribbean and tropical eastern Pacific. Some significant taxonomic changes are proposed: Ischnoplax is elevated to generic level; Ischnochiton boogii is allocated to Stenoplax; Lepidochitona liozonis and L. rosea are regarded as junior synonyms of L. beanii; Acanthochitona hemphilli is regarded as junior synonym of A. rhodea; Acanthochilona elongata. A. interfissa and A. andersoni are regarded as synonyms of Choneplax lata. As the easternmost island ofthe Lesser Antilles, Barbados (l3°04'N, 59°37'W) is exposed to the unimpeded impact of the North Equatorial Current, while its relative closeness to northern Brazil subjects it to the seasonal influence of the Amazon (Kidd and Sander, 1979). -

Boss 1 and Rudiger Bieler2 ABSTRACT. This is the second part of a series on the German zoologist Johannes Thiele (1860-1935) and comprises a critical listing of the genus-group taxa which he described as new to malacology. Each of these names is accompanied by author and bibliographic references, original status, type-species with its original binominal spelling and bibliographic source and some data on subsequent taxonomic placements. Thiele introduced a total of 291 such names in the Phylum Mollusca, distributed as follows: 11 Aplacophora; 39 Polyplacophora; 200 Gastropoda (138 Prosobranchia; 20 Opisthobranchia and 42 Pulmonata); 31 Bivalvia; 10 Cephalopoda; there were no new scaphopod or monoplacophoran names. Of these, later authors recognized as valid 85 at the generic level, 110 at the subgeneric level; 71 are considered to be synonyms, and the remaining 25 are unjustified emendations or errors. INTRODUCTION As part of a series on the scientific contributions of Johannes Thiele, the eminent German zoologist, we provide here an alphabetical listing and analysis of all the genus-group taxa introduced by him in his publications on mollusks as delineated by Bieler & Boss (1989).
