  • The Heritage of Rogier Van Der Weyden. Painting in Brussels 1450-1520
Press Release Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium The heritage of Rogier van der Weyden. Painting in Brussels 1450-1520. 11.10 2013 > 25.01 2014 In the autumn of 2013 the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium will stage an exhibition devoted to painting in Brussels in the period between the death of Rogier van der Weyden (1464) and the activity of Bernard van Orley (1515- 1541). At that moment Brussels was a thriving town. The Coudenberg Palace being the favourite residence of the dukes of Burgundy. It was surrounded by the palaces of courtiers and noble families like the Nassau or the Ravenstein. They were all important patrons of the arts. It is difficult to identify the painters of this period. Among the painters active in Brussels at that moment, Colyn de Coter is the only one of whose signed work has come down to us. Rogier van der Weyden, Portrait of Antony of Bourgondy ca. 1430 -1504 (1456 - 1464), Oak, 38,4 x 28 x 0,4 cm ©MRBAB/KMSKB Through a document we know that Aert van den Bossche painted a triptych for the Saint Nicolas church. Pieter van der Weyden, who inherited the famous workshop of his father Rogier, is mentioned in several documents, but no painting can be attributed with certainty to him. On the other hand, there are unsigned and undocumented paintings that show a strong influence of Rogier van der Weyden, or others with the inscription "te Bruesele" - made in Brussels - and some that prominently depict Brussels monuments, like the Saint Gudula Cathedral.

  • Technical Examination of the Emerson-White Book of Hours
Mayer et al. Herit Sci (2018) 6:48 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40494-018-0211-4 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Technical examination of the Emerson‑White Book of Hours: observations on pigment preferences and media application in a Flemish manuscript Debora D. Mayer1*, Hope Mayo2, Erin Mysak3, Theresa J. Smith4 and Katherine Eremin5 Abstract The Emerson-White Hours (MS Typ 443–443.1, Houghton Library, Harvard University) is a book of hours and missal produced in Valenciennes, Bruges, and Ghent in the late 1470s or early 1480s. There are seven full-page miniatures (many more have been removed), fourteen historiated borders, 28 historiated initials, and 24 calendar illustrations in tempera and gold. Text pages have shell gold trompe-l’oeil borders. The illuminators include Simon Marmion, the Master of the Houghton Miniatures (named for this manuscript), the Master of the Dresden Prayerbook, and one of the Ghent Associates. The goal of analysis was to determine if identifcation of palettes supported previous stylistic attributions. Focusing on the illuminations attributed to Simon Marmion and the Houghton Master, we demonstrate that technical analysis can support attribution by identifying diferences in artists’ pigment preferences, pigment blending, and technique of paint application, particularly how the artists render shadows. Keywords: Illuminated manuscript, Book of hours, Flemish, Technical study, Pigment identifcation, Artists’ technique, Simon Marmion, Houghton Master, Master of the Dresden Prayerbook, Ghent Associates, Shell brass, Harvard Introduction compline (before sleep). • Multo in Parvo: Joris Hoefnagel's Illuminations
MULTO IN PARVO: JORIS HOEFNAGEL’S ILLUMINATIONS AND THE GATHERED PRACTICES OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN COURT CULTURE by JOAN BOYCHUK B.A., McGill University, 2004 M.A., McGill University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Art History and Theory) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2016 © Joan Boychuk, 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the works of illumination produced by the itinerant Flemish miniator, Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), during his tenure as court artist to the Wittelsbachs and Habsburgs in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. Comprising illuminated manuscripts as well as independent miniatures, the works at the center of this study provide novel insight into Hoefnagel’s practice as an illuminator and also into the status and function of illumination at the Central European courts of Munich, Ambras, and Prague. Not simply extending a traditional interest in the medium at these sites, Hoefnagel’s works on parchment transformed illumination into a new form bringing together a range of practices and discourses associated with the courts, with humanism, and with emerging disciplines dedicated to the production of new knowledge. Artistically inventive and conceptually productive, Hoefnagel’s compositions helped shaped an identity for the artist as a hieroglyphicus—an initiate into and maker of a privileged language of representation. Unlike other medieval and early modern art, the illuminated page could bring together, on one surface, different media (text and image), genres (heraldry, portraiture, nature studies, biblical narrative, and ornament, among others), and modes of representation (realism, illusionism, symbolism, and abstraction).

ABSTRACT The architecture directly reveals its functionality and the sacredness of their structures. But the Early Flemish transform their scenography in an endless source of meanings from “disgui- sed symbolism”. To set their iconographic these painters based on the Christian tradition and theology of the Middle Ages. This text intends to go in depth the relationship between archi- tecture, liturgy and symbols through the works of R. Campin, D. Bouts and V. van der Stockt preserved in the Museo del Prado. THE THEME OF THE WISE AND FOOLISH VIRGINS AS PART OF THE LAST JUDGEMENT ICONOGRAPHY IN FLANDERS AND ITALY IN THE LATE 15TH AND THE 16TH CENTURIES Josephine Mary Alexander A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of MPhil at the University of St Andrews 1981 Full metadata for this item is available in St Andrews Research Repository at: http://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/ Please use this identifier to cite or link to this item: http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15249 This item is protected by original copyright ABSTRACT The parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins is told in Matthew's Gospel, Ch.25, v1-13, as an allegory of the Last Judgement. This thesis sets out to examine firstly, how closely the parable is related to the iconography of the Last Judgement in the art of the 15th and 16th centuries; secondly to demonstrate how its inter pretation came to be broadened by association with other biblical themes, themselves part of the Last Judgement iconography. Part I traces the origins and develop ment of the theme from early Christian times to the 15th century. In these early sources the artistic tradition of linking the parable to the Last Judgement was first established; the Wise and Foolish Virgins were also linked with Ecclesia and Synagogue and with the Virtues and Vices; and the typological tradition of biblical illustration broadened the theme further by pairing it with other biblical feasts. Appendix I is a handlist of the Wise and Foolish Virgins up till the late 15th century and it illustrates how popular the theme had become by the Middle Ages.

  • The Early Netherlandish Underdrawing Craze and the End of a Connoisseurship Era
Genius disrobed: The Early Netherlandish underdrawing craze and the end of a connoisseurship era Noa Turel In the 1970s, connoisseurship experienced a surprising revival in the study of Early Netherlandish painting. Overshadowed for decades by iconographic studies, traditional inquiries into attribution and quality received a boost from an unexpected source: the Ph.D. research of the Dutch physicist J. R. J. van Asperen de Boer.1 His contribution, summarized in the 1969 article 'Reflectography of Paintings Using an Infrared Vidicon Television System', was the development of a new method for capturing infrared images, which more effectively penetrated paint layers to expose the underdrawing.2 The system he designed, followed by a succession of improved analogue and later digital ones, led to what is nowadays almost unfettered access to the underdrawings of many paintings. Part of a constellation of established and emerging practices of the so-called 'technical investigation' of art, infrared reflectography (IRR) stood out in its rapid dissemination and impact; art historians, especially those charged with the custodianship of important collections of Early Netherlandish easel paintings, were quick to adopt it.3 The access to the underdrawings that IRR afforded was particularly welcome because it seems to somewhat offset the remarkable paucity of extant Netherlandish drawings from the first half of the fifteenth century. The IRR technique propelled rapidly and enhanced a flurry of connoisseurship-oriented scholarship on these Early Netherlandish panels, which, as the earliest extant realistic oil pictures of the Renaissance, are at the basis of Western canon of modern painting. This resulted in an impressive body of new literature in which the evidence of IRR played a significant role.4 In this article I explore the surprising 1 Johan R.

Wonderful introduction to Flanders in all its variety Exhibition visit to ‘Van Eyck: an Optical Revolution’ in Ghent included Visit led by renowned expert on Flemish painting & consultant on the exhibition Itinerary focuses on Van Eyck, Memling & other major Flemish renaissance masters Gentle pace with time for independent exploration Good hotel, wonderfully located & excellent Jan van Eyck, The Mystic Lamb, Ghent Altarpiece, food Ghent, St Bavo’s Cathedral Flanders was home to some of the greatest painters of the late medieval and renaissance periods. One of the most economically developed and culturally rich areas of Europe, it was ruled by the Dukes of Burgundy and subsequently by the Habsburgs, its wealth founded on the manufacture of high quality textiles and international trade. Cosmopolitan and enterprising, the great Flemish cities of Bruges and Ghent fostered developments that shaped the course of history, from international banking and the rise of printing to the Protestant Reformation. These cities were also centres of artistic innovation. It was here that in the early fifteenth century Jan van Eyck, through the meticulous observation of reality and the skilful manipulation of oil paint – an ‘optical revolution’, no less – developed a naturalistic pictorial language that was to influence artists as far afield as Italy. A second, parallel, approach was pioneered by Roger van der Weyden, based largely in Brussels, whose work, no less technically accomplished, strove for a more spiritual presentation of sacred narratives. Both men came to influence subsequent generations with Hugo van der Goes in Ghent and above all, Hans Memling in Bruges, at the forefront of later developments.
