  • Geographical Point of View on Transformation from Waste Disposal Site to Housing in Yangon City Dr
1 Geographical Point of View on Transformation from Waste Disposal Site to Housing in Yangon City Dr. Nant Mu Aye Professor and Head Geography Department Yangon University of Economics Introduction Brownfields are generally defined as abandoned or underused industrial or commercial properties where redevelopment is complicated by actual or perceived environmental contamination. Brownfields vary in size, location, age and past use. They can range from a small, abandoned corner gas station to a large, multi-acre former manufacturing plant that has been closed for years. ( Environmental Protection Agency,) Some waste disposal sites suffer from the mistaken perception that they are contaminated, when in fact, they just need to be cleared of debris. There may be soil and groundwater contamination caused by discharges or dumping of organic and inorganic chemicals. Redevelopment of waste disposal sites benefits communities through urban regeneration, reduced sprawl, an increase in tax revenues and job and an improved living environment. Therefore, transformation of waste disposal site to housing area is important for sustainable development of the urban area. Brownfield redevelopment is important because it - restores urban property to productive use, thus increasing property values - increases job opportunities and local tax revenues - improves public health and the environment - utilizes existing public infrastructure. - eliminates neighbourhood blight, thus improving a community's image and long-term sustainability. Brownfields can be redeveloped for a wide variety of purposes. Successful redevelopment efforts have turned brownfields into retail sites, light industrial facilities, office parks, waterfront promenades, parks, schools, low–income housing, stadiums and transit centres. Strategic Brownfield redevelopment can clean up environmental hazards, remove neighbourhood eyesore, create jobs, provide housing and promote general economic health in local communities of all sizes.

While the government of Myanmar ratified ILO Convention 182 in 2013, it lacks a model of direct interventions for child labourers, their households and their communities. The last component of My‐PEC on direct services aims at developing, implementing and documenting replicable models of interventions in three selected communities of Myanmar.

  • A Geographic Analysis on Distribution Pattern of Parks and Gardens in Yangon City
Dagon University Research Journal 2011, Vol. 3 A Geographic Analysis on Distribution Pattern of Parks and Gardens in Yangon City Zaw Latt Tun* Abstract Recreation is an essential need for human beings. At present, due to the rapid advance in technology, a number of electronic devices for indoor recreation have widely been used in several places, especially in urban areas. However, outdoor recreation is also important for physical and mental relaxation for the sake of less expense of money as well as for healthy lifestyles. Moreover, it is the most appropriate type of recreation for all lifestyles, whether male or female, young or adult, rich or poor, single or married and so on. Therefore, this study attempts to highlight the existing distribution pattern of some outdoor recreation sites, particularly parks and gardens of Yangon City from geographical point of view. Introduction ‘Recreation’ means any activity done for pleasure in leisure time without expensing any money. The choice of recreation depends on individual interest, ability, one's income. This means that some hobbies e.g. golf, have a limited range of socio-economic classes involved. Personal choice is influenced by a range of factors including age and gender, education and interests, socio-economic group, occupation and status, family and stage in the life cycle, time available, distances involved transport available and facilities needed (Ganderton, 2000). At present due to the rapid advance of technology, a number of electronic devices for indoor recreation overwhelm in several places especially in urban areas. Modern recreation facilities may temporarily remove the mental stress caused by monotonous daily routine, transport difficulties, noise pollution etc., but these facilities may, in the end, cause both physical and mental defect, unless there is insufficient fresh air, green cover and open space for exercise.

CO-CREATION WORKSHOP IN YANGON Hosted by WOMEN FOR THE WORLD (WfW) With the support of COMMUNITY ARCHITECTS NETWORK (CAN) 9th-13th NOVEMBER, 2019 – BRIEF – 1. Overview of Yangon and Urban Development Trends Yangon is the largest city and commercial and industrial hub of Myanmar and the metropolis of Yangon Region. Formerly known as Rangoon, the city served as the administrative capital of the country before 2006, when the government moved the capital to newly-built Naypyidaw. Measured at 10,000 km2, Yangon Region is bordered by the Andaman Sea to the south, the Bago Region to the north and east, and the Ayeyarwady Region to the west, and, besides Yangon city, is predominantly rural. This geographical location, as well as the effects of climate change, expose the region to various natural hazards, like droughts, floods, earthquakes, cyclones and fires. In administrative terms, Yangon Region is divided into 45 townships, 33 of which comprise Yangon City and are divided into smaller units: 630 urban wards and 54 tracts. With a population of 7.3 million, it is the most densely inhabited region in the country. Most of this population is concentrated in Yangon City though, making up an average density of 5,363 inhabitants per km2 and an urban population of 5,2 million, which is expected to double by 2040. Yangon is also the most diverse hub in the country, being home to multiple ethnic and religious groups alongside the Bamar Buddhist majority; including Indian, Chinese, Karen and Rakhine people, and Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Jewish communities. This diversity can be attributed to the long-standing internal and external migration waves towards Yangon and, although it was largely suppressed during the period of military rule, its display in the life of the city has been increasing again.
