He was 77. Rumsey studied in Sydney with Donald Hollier and in Europe with Jorgen-Ernst Hansen (Copenhagen), Marie-Claire Alain (Paris) and Anton Heiller (Vienna), returning to Australia in 1967 and Sydney in 1969. In 2000 he moved to Switzerland, not least to be able to work on and research the historic medieval and baroque instruments that had been his lifelong study. He leaves a legacy of fine instruments (on whose restoration he was consulted), influential students, and memorable recordings and performances. Organ enthusiasts of all ages are in for a treat as the City of Melbourne and the Society of Organists Victoria present the 2017 edition of Get Organ-ised! This hugely popular free annual event showcases the Melbourne Town Hall’s truly awe-inspiring 10,000 pipe Grand Organ (the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere) providing a rare opportunity for the general public to engage directly with this magnificent instrument. This year’s centrepiece feature is a very special exclusive presentation: Australian TV/Radio voice-over legend John Blackman (Hey Hey It’s Saturday, 3AW Magic 1278) will perform a live narration of Bram Stoker’s spooky classic Dracula, with a live soundtrack performed on the Grand Organ by organ master Brendon Lukin. The day also features a range of free activities including guided backstage tours of the Grand Organ, a concert showcasing Victoria’s finest emerging concert organists, and a guided open- access session allowing players of all ages to try their hand playing the gargantuan instrument. Entry to the event is free; and bookings for open console and backstage tours are available here. Backstage tours visit the organ museum and view the pipes at close range. Outstanding Australian organist Dr Calvin Bowman will give a recital on the beautiful Knud Smenge pipe organ at St Oswald’s. Dr Bowman is well known for his work as keyboard soloist with the ABC and many of Australia’s leading orchestras. Also, he is famous for presentation of the complete Bach organ works in a single 17 hour sitting for the Melbourne International Festival. This concert will feature organ works by JS Bach, Walond, Guilmart, Thalben-Ball and others. Kew Philharmonic Chamber Choir has planned to sing an Evensong at Holy Trinity Kew as part of their contribution to the Kew Festival. For various reasons, the group needs a few more tenors and basses, and a couple of altos. The music is mainly Purcell. Since that Monday is Labour Day, it may prove to be a bother for some, but it is hoped that there could be some singers who would enjoy the experience. Rehearsal will be at 2.15pm. BACH’S SAINT JOHN PASSION Sunday 19 March, 4.00pm at St John’s Anglican Church, Finch Street, East Malvern. Join us for a moving performance of Bach’s majestic Saint John Passion, featuring Paul McMahon as The Evangelist, and soloists Michael Leighton Jones, Timothy Reynolds, Kristy Biber, Jordie Howell, and Elizabeth Chong. Accompanied by the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra, and the Choir of Christ Church South Yarra and Choral scholars of Saint John’s East Malvern, it will be a concert not to be missed. BACH CANTATA SERVICES AT ST JOHN’S SOUTHGATE St John’s Lutheran Church, Southgate presents an ongoing series of services incorporating the choral music of J.S. Bach in the context for which it was written, liturgical Lutheran church services. 2017 is its 20th liturgical year. Services include organ music on the 23-stop gallery organ (Smenge, 1992), usually by Bach. An on-going initiative featuring the next generation of Australian organists, the MUSOC is presented by the Australian and New Zealand College of Organists, with generous support from the University of Melbourne and Trinity, Ormond and Queen’s Colleges. Every Friday during Semester there will be a free lunchtime organ concert performed on one of the pipe organs at the University of Melbourne, which has more pipe organs than any other Australasian University. In accord with ANZCO’s mission, by promoting organ performance, teaching and learning, the MUSOC will help to build the profile of the King of Instruments and develop a sustainable pipe organ culture in Australasia.
