Both teams have played patches of outstanding rugby, but on to many occasions have switched off at the crucial stage, which has cost them dearly. Zingari-Richmond will look to their forward pack with the likes of Tonga, Rowe, Still and Woolfreys to lay the platform for a dangerous backline who have shown on more than one occasion that they aren’t afraid to run the ball from anywhere. Green Island, similar to Zingari- Richmond will be expecting another big shift from their forward pack who haven’t taken a backwards step this year on the back of McCutcheon, Kirkwood and Kingsbury, whilst their backline has looked better and better each week. One thing is for certain, this match will come down to who wants it the most. When the going gets tough one of these sides will produce a match winning moment, the side that does will take home the Hellyer Memorial. Players to Watch: Thomas Johnson (Zingari-Richmond) playing some of his best footy in 2017, TJ has chosen the perfect moment between attacking the line and unleashing his outside backs. If he can replicate this vs. Green Island then the Dragons will be a huge chance. Sunia Makasini (Green Island) seems to find a way to beat the first defender more times than not (Similar to another Green Island Fullback who also plays for the All Blacks!) If Sunia can produce another magical display, then expect the Grizzlies to attain the necessary ascendency to go on and win the match. After the morale boosting win AU now set their sights on Harbour who are on a four match winning streak and playing with a high degree of confidence. Alhambra-Union will be asking their forwards to put in a big shift against an intimidating Harbour forward pack and will look for their X-Factor coated backline to break the game open. Harbour on the other hand will look to attain dominance with their big ball runners upfront and when the timing is right they will look to their elusive backline to ensure they leave the North Ground with a win and the Ross Godman Memorial. Expect this game to be a high scoring thriller. Players to Watch: Poasa Cama (Alhambra-Union) looked upon as the King of X-factor at AU, he creates something out of nothing and when Alhambra- Union need him the most he delivers. Poasa named at second five will often pop up at various positions around the field where his first and second options are to attack! Poasa will play a big part if AU go on to win.

Richard Kinley General Manager Presidents Report The last two years, during my term as President, has seen massive changes in the operational style of the Union and the method in which we run our business. After the near demise of Otago Rugby in 2011/12 it appears the leaner and more financially efficient model we now have for provincial rugby is showing its true value. It has been a difficult period and I must give full credit to Richard Kinley and his staff who have stuck with Otago Rugby through these trying times, having now got the Union back on solid ground both financially as well as on the paddock, where it really matters. The efforts of the current coaching staff must also be commended as they have endured tough times recently and have stuck with Otago through all of it and it is to them that I give sincere personal thanks. Having initially being elected, to the then Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union in 1993, I have seen many changes in my time, both on the paddock as well as from the construction of the “ new ”stands at Carisbrook through to the demolition of same, through to the state of the art covered stadium we now have today.

There have been many wonderful memories during my time as President, the most enjoyable being the wonderful people I have been able to meet. Chatting to friends at after-match functions, discussing initiatives with our sponsors, talking to people on the side-lines and discussing issues at numerous meetings, have all given me many ideas to pass onto the staff and the Board to help enhance the game at all levels. I have been fortunate enough to visit almost every club in Otago this year, in addition to supporting secondary school rugby both on Saturdays and during the week, as well as see many games of primary rugby. I have enjoyed attending as many meetings as possible, to show the ORFU’s support as well as sponsors functions and a number of prize givings.

We all know there are some challenging times ahead for the ORFU in terms of ensuring we are doing our very best to cater for the expectations of the rugby community in all aspects of the game. Having said that I believe that I am in a privileged position to make a balanced judgement across the whole domain of community rugby, and I am strongly of the view that while we need to continue to address some areas of concern, there are still many positive aspects of the game that we should celebrate. I am continued to be impressed with the game at primary level and all clubs and schools should be congratulated on the way they are looking after our young players, encouraging them in a positive way to enjoy the game. The weight grades is an area of immense satisfaction to me as I viewed a number of trials and representative games all over the province.
