It is only through concerned Owners and Guests like yourselves filling in the form and submitting it, that we are able to improve facilities. Each form will be analysed and the required action taken, all recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Directors. So as to ensure optimal fishing and correct stocking levels, it is essential that you complete your fishing permit. (please follow the instructions on the permit, even if you caught nothing or did not fish). This also allows us to compile precise fishing records, monitor the fishing as well as track how many non-fisherman stayed on the Farm. Please hand these returns in at the Reception or at the Main Gate on departure. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Kind regards,

The Millstream Team

FIRE In the event of fire in your cottage, evacuate immediately and contact Management. Proceed to the designated Emergency Assembly Point. next to the Recreation Centre Should you notice a fire on the Farm, please contact Management as quickly as possible. 083 463 0267 or the Office 013 253 9910/11. Help prevent fires on the Farm by adhering to the following: - • USE DESIGNATED BRAAI AREAS ONLY • ALWAYS TEND YOUR BRAAI FIRE • DO NOT THROW MATCHES OR CIGARETTE BUTTS INTO THE VELD

FIRE LIGHTING When lighting a fire do not use pine needles or dry pine cones. These exude a gum residue that sticks to everything making cleaning very difficult.

FIREWOOD Fire wood, briquettes, fire lighters and matches are available at Reception during office hours and at the Main Entrance Gate after hours. (Please Note No credit is given for Fire Wood not used)

Please refrain from collecting wood or kindling from the veld. Pine and gum logs, due to their high gum and resin content (especially when wet), spark badly resulting in burnt carpets and damaged floors. Funds generated from the sale of wood go towards eradicating exotic invasive plants & trees and replanting indigenous vegetation on the Farm.

Any other type of fishing equipment i.e. spinning rods, coffee grinders, spinners / lures, bait, sinkers etc. is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN !!! Fly Rods can be hired from Reception and if you are a novice needing help, a fly fishing demonstration is held on the lawn outside the Recreation Centre every Saturday at 10h00. Individual lessons can also be booked. Relevant Extracts from:- Dam Management and Fish Stocking Policies 1. Dams, Ponds & Weirs: The dams, ponds and weirs are intended for fly fishing and should be in the best possible condition to support trout and provide as natural a habitat as possible. Therefore the following compromises the outline of a management plan. 2. Fish Stocking & Feeding 2.1 In order to safeguard the health of fish stocks in Millstream waters, only approved stockists will be used and management will satisfy themselves at least every 6 months that supplier bio security arrangements are acceptable. During summer, if there are disease outbreaks reported, it may be appropriate to do this more often and at the discretion of management, the supplier may be asked for a Veterinary certificate proving the absence of infection. 2.1 In order to maintain the farm’s reputation as a premier fly fishing resort, it is necessary to maintain a fish population density which, on historical performance, has been achieved by placing an average of 7.5 tons of fish into the dams annually. This stocking takes place on a 2 week cycle throughout the year but subject to climatic conditions, may be varied from time to time at the discretion of the Fish Bailiff and/or t he Resort Manager. Seasonal visitor pressure may also prompt some adjustment. As the size of the water and the amount of fishing pressure that it receives are also a significant factor, the size of fish stocked will vary as follows but not limited to:

Waters Size of Fish Weirs, Ponds and Wordsworth water 500g – 1kg

Tintern Water, Coleridge and Lake 500g – 1.5kg Millstream Solitary Reaper and Crystabel 1500g – 2kg

2.3 Supplementary feed may be supplied to the fish at the discretion of the Fish Bailiff but not on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.

8 3. Problem Animal Control Otters are an endangered and a threatened species in Southern Africa and therefore a protected species. Very little is known about them. and several studies have been supported by Millstream to date the feedback informs us that they do consume trout but the quantities are in question and that they certainly take a variety of other natural foods such as crabs etc. There are currently no economically, humane or environmentally sound control measures known. Reed Cormorants are unlikely to do much damage unless smaller fish than the norm are stocked. White Breasted Cormorants, however, are of concern and are probably responsible for taking a percentage of all Millstream fish stocks. Every effort should be made to discourage these birds by scaring them off perching and roosting sites. In extreme cases, it may be necessary to eradicate the offenders but this has a number of implications. This will only be carried out under strict direction of the Board of Directors

FIRST AID A limited first aid kit is available at Reception. For more serious problems please contact either the Doctors or hospital listed.

Listen to what others have to say, and you will be surprised at what you will learn. Children (yours or anybody else’s) are a special case, and typically want to catch the most fish and the biggest fish – for after all, isn’t this the mark of a good fisherman? We need to encourage them (in a way that reinforces our values and ethics but does not dampen their enthusiasm) by showing that the real return for the ethical fisherman goes far beyond the fish themselves.

These kinds of sentiments were probably expressed in Roberts Ruark’s book: ‘The Old Man and the Boy’. If you really want an insight into introducing your people to outdoor sports, you cannot do better than read this.

4. EQUIPMENT 4.1 Only recognised fly fishing tackle may be used and barbless flies are mandatory on catch and release dams; recommended on all dams. If you wish to continue fishing after reaching your limit, barbless flies are mandatory. 4.2 Rods longer than 10ft and heavier than 9wt are prohibited. Anglers may only use one rod at a time, i.e. no set rods which are not actively in use. 4.3 Spinning reels of either open or closed face design as well as bait casting reels or centre pin reels are prohibited. 4.4 Prohibited flies include: 4.4.1 Flies constructed on multiple point hooks. 4.4.2 Flies constructed on a hook larger than size 4. 4.5 Any form of bait, with or without a fly, any scent or flavoured substance applied to flies and spinners or lures are prohibited. 4.6 Landing nets must have the bag constructed of knotless mesh material. 4.7 Nets, (other than landing nets used to land a hooked fish) traps, snares, snagging or jigging, poisons or drugs are prohibited. 4.8 Fish finders or similar devices are prohibited.

RECORDS AND DECLARATIONS 6.1 All fishing activities must be recorded on the numbered permit/return that is received at the gate on entry to the Farm. 6.2 Details recorded must include the day and the water on which the fish was caught, numbers of fish caught, killed or released. Size/mass is optional. 6.3 The numbered permit/return must be completed on a daily basis and handed into the office or entrance gate guard on departure. 6.4 All fish caught at other venues and in possession must be declared to the entrance gate guard on entering the Farm. Note: The fishing record book in each cottage may also be completed for the cottage occupant’s interest but this is not a substitute for completion of the numbered permit/return. 7. RELEASE PROCEDURE Trout will not survive rough handling and especially in the hot summer months when oxygen levels in the water are low, the chances of survival are even further reduced. To give the fish a better chance, please observe the following recommendations: 7.1 Do not play the fish to exhaustion. Get it in as quickly as possible to avoid the build-up of lactic acid in the muscles as this will kill the fish even if it appears to have recovered. 7.2 Do not remove the fish from the water if possible and in this context, barbless hooks are very beneficial and forceps make the job even easier. If it is necessary to take the fish out of the water, make sure that your hands are wet and if possible, lay the fish on a wet towel while you remove the hook. If you need to weigh the fish, it is better to do so inside a knotless landing net and then subtract the weight of the net afterwards. If the fish has swallowed the fly, do not attempt to remove the hook. Rather cut the tippet as close to the mouth as possible and leave the hook in place. If, however, any fish is bleeding from the mouth or the gills, do not attempt to return it. Do not keep the fish out of the water for more than 20 seconds. 7.3 Make sure the fish has recovered before you release it. The best way to do this is to hold it gently by the tail and move it back and forth to aerate the gills. Do not let go until the fish is strong enough to pull away. Never drop a fish onto a hot, rough or dry bank and then throw it back into deep water. It will turn belly-up. 8. ROD LIMITS The maximum number of rods (active anglers) on any or all waters at any one time is restricted to: 10 bedded cottages - 5 anglers per cottage 6 bedded cottage - 3 anglers per cottage 4 bedded cottages - 2 anglers per cottage 21 9. SEASONS 9.1 There are no restricted seasons on the waters of Millstream Farm. 10. SIZE LIMITS

10.1 There are no size limits applicable to fish taken from Millstream waters. 11.TROPHY FISH Lake Crystabel and Solitary Reaper are designated Trophy (Catch and Release) Dams. 11.1 All fish caught from Trophy (catch and release) Dams must either: - Be carefully released back into the water - Be designated a trophy fish in which case the fish can be killed. Such fish must be specifically recorded at the farm office. 11.2 Fish over 3.5 kg (ungutted) may be kept as trophy fish without charge. 11.3 Fish smaller than 3.5 kg (ungutted) will be charged at R200 per kilogram or part thereof. 12. DISABLED ANGLERS Disabled or infirm anglers who are unable to reach some of the more inaccessible waters may request transport assistance from Farm Management.

SANCTIONS/PENALTIES Contravention of these rules will result in consequences and the Farm Manager (or in his absence the Deputy Manager) has been mandated by the Board to use his discretion in dealing with incidents. The following examples/guidelines are provided and the distinction is drawn between an occurrence which is fortuitous or accidental and one which may be caused by wilful, deliberate or negligent conduct: • Loss of or damage to farm property e.g. cottage inventory – repair or replacement cost.

• Unruly behaviour especially causing distress to other residents – admonishment but if appropriate, the individual/s may be asked to leave the Farm.

• Over-occupation – if it is not practical to reduce the complement immediately, a penalty equivalent to twice the per person weekend rental rate will be charged.

• Illegal fishing methods – admonishment but if appropriate, temporary confiscation of equipment and the individual may be asked to leave the Farm.

• Fish taken in excess of the allowed bag – confiscation of the excess fish (the largest in the bag) and a penalty calculated at three times the replacement cost of the fish.

• In the event that a person is asked to leave the Farm, no refund of the levy or rental or other costs will be contemplated. 22 DULLSTROOM

23 ATTRACTIONS IN AND AROUND DULLSTROOM

STEENKAMPSBERG NATURE RESERVE For energetic visitors, the Steenkampsberg Nature Reserve offers a number of short hiking trails which lead through the scenic landscape of the pristine Mpumalanga escarpment. Though the trails lead hikers across the Suikerboskop Mountain, they are not particularly physically demanding, and allow excellent opportunities for visitors to take in the immaculate and unspoilt surroundings. The eastern slopes of the Suikerboskop Mountain feature an old British blockhouse, and a number of war graves which date back to the Second Anglo-Boer War which took place between 1899 and 1902. Entrance fee is R5.00 VERLOREN VALLEI NATURE RESERVE Those interested in more peaceful pursuits should not miss the Verloren Vallei Nature Reserve. It is one of the few locations in where breeding populations of three of the world's endangered crane species are found. The Blue Crane, which is South Africa's national bird, can be spotted along with Wattled Cranes and Crowned Cranes at the Reserve. The Wattled Crane is critically endangered and the Blue Crane and Crowned Crane are endangered. Guided tours only, strictly by appointment.

Verloren Vallei is a proclaimed Nature Reserve, about 13 km from Dullstroom. The reserve is in an undisturbed area of the Steenkampsberg Plateau, with wide open, rolling grasslands and wetlands. The open grassland is home to a variety birds, such as bald ibis, cisticolas, longclaws, pipits, larks, finches, long tailed shrikes and red bishops. In the rocky outcrops, you will find birds such as the ground woodpecker, mountain chat, buff streaked chat and the cape rock thrush. The scarce grey winged and red winged francolin favour these remote mountain sides. The wetland areas provide a refuge for the three crane species. The Blue and Crowned Cranes spend winter in flocks, then break up into pairs to breed and each pair establishes their own territory. Wattled Cranes remain together in pairs on their territories and will usually occupy a chosen site for life, all year round. The Reserve having been declared an international RAMSAR site signifies a wetland area of international importance. The Reserve comprises typical grassland with a network of more than 30 wetlands which provide a perfect habitat for a large number of endemic and Red Data species. The inter-linked wetlands play an important hydrological role because they are the source of both the Crocodile and Olifants river systems. An isolated "rear and release" facility has been established for Wattled Cranes at Verloren Vallei. Humans dressed in costumes resembling the Wattled Crane act as "crane mothers" in the rearing of the chicks.

WHISKY TASTING (Wild about Whisky) Even if you’re not wild about whisky, a very entertaining and educational outing (if you can stay sober)

From opening in 2006, with only about a dozen whiskies, Wild About Whisky has slowly built up the menu to over one thousand whiskies from all over the world and continue to add to it.

Their focus is on whisky tuition, and with the aid of visuals and our tastings they endeavour to educate those who enjoy whisky. Although it is a dedicated whisky bar, there is a small selection of wines, craft beer, other spirits and Illy coffee available

25 EVENTS AND FESTIVALS

THE TONTELDOOS COUNTRY FESTIVAL This event usually takes place over the Easter weekend and is the ideal opportunity for city folk to escape from the hustle and bustle and to explore the area, learn about its interesting history and to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet amidst the beauty of nature. The Tonteldoos Country Festival adds spice and colour to an unforgettable weekend.

The festival is also well known for its peach mampoer, which originates in Tonteldoos (Groot Marico might not agree). Apparently named after one Chieftain Mampure, who used it, (surely amongst other uses), as an effective means of bribery. Other local produce such as dried peaches, jams and preserved fruits are also on sale. Tonteldoos is situated some 20km North East of Dullstroom. Directions to the village are posted in Dullstroom during the festival.

DULLSTROOM WINTER FESTIVAL Dullstroom Winter Festival takes place during the months of June and July and is jam packed with music, outdoor activities, winter goodies and the creative arts. The Festival usually runs for a total of 9 days.

During the festival Dullstroom comes alive with shops, businesses and restaurants putting up sparkling decorations and Christmas lights to ensure families enjoy the midwinter Christmas theme that has become a firm favourite.

Fantastic live music events, flea markets, a farmers market, wine, whisky and beer tasting, horse rides, art exhibitions, and theme evenings ensure fun for the whole family.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN GAME FAIR The South African Game Fair is the country's premier exhibition of country pursuits. This event is held annually, and takes place at the well known Dullstroom Bird of Prey Centre.

Visitors have access to the Raptor Rehabilitation Centre, flying displays, on site fly casting demonstrations and instruction. In a neighbouring field there are various working dog displays, horse riding and at a safe distance away, clay pigeon shooting, bow hunting and other firearm demonstrations and competitions.
