The study of leeches from Lake Gusinoe and its adjacent area offered us the possibility to determine species diversity. Asa result, an updated species list of the Gusinoe Hirudinea fauna (Annelida, Clitellata) has been compiled. There are two orders and three families of leeches in the Gusinoe area: order Rhynchobdellida (families Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae) and order Arhynchobdellida (family Erpobdellidae). In total, 6 leech species belonging to 6 genera have been identified. Of these, 3 taxa belonging to the family Glossiphoniidae (Alboglossiphonia heteroclita f. papillosa, Hemiclepsis marginata,andHelobdella stagnalis) and representatives of 3 unidentified species (Glossiphonia sp., Piscicola sp., and Erpobdella sp.) have been recorded. The checklist gives a contemporary overview of the species composition of leeches and information on their hosts or substrates. -

Leeches exhibit a variety of ingestion behaviors and morphologically diverse ingestion organs. In this study, we investigated the correlation between behavioral pattern and feeding organ structure of leech species. Among them, we found that Alboglossiphonia sp. swallows prey whole using its proboscis, whereas other leeches exhibit typical fuid‑sucking behavior. To address whether the diferent feeding behaviors are intrinsic, we investigated the behavioral patterns and muscle arrangements in the earlier developmental stage of glossiphoniid leeches. Juvenile Glossiphoniidae including the Alboglossiphonia sp. exhibit the fuid ingestion behavior and have the proboscis with the compartmentalized muscle layers. This study provides the characteristics of leeches with specifc ingestion behaviors, and a comparison of structural diferences that serves as the frst evidence of the proboscis diversifcation. Diverse animals have evolved a great variety of ways to obtain the energy needed for their survival and reproduc- tion. Some invertebrates and vertebrates use potent jaws to swallow the entire prey (macrophagous)1–5, while others use organs such as proboscises or stylets to penetrate the body wall of the prey and suck out fuid (fuid ingestion)6–11. Leeches (Phylum Annelida), are within the class Clitellata, superorder Euhirndinea. Te group of Clitellata consists of Euhirudinea, Acanthobdellida, Branchiobdellida, and Oligochaeta, all of which are her- maphroditic and deposit cocoons through a special organ called clitellum 12. -

The phylogenetic relationships, using parsimony anal- ysis, of the order Arhynchobdellida were investigated using nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA, mitochondrial 12S rDNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence data, as well as 24 morphological characters. Thirty-nine arhynchobdellid species were selected to represent the seven currently recognized families. Sixteen rhynchobdellid leeches from the families Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae were included as outgroup taxa. Analysis of all available data resolved a single most-parsimonious tree. The cladogram conflicted with most of the traditional classification schemes of the Arhynchobdellida. Monophyly of the Erpobdelliformes and Hirudini- formes was supported, whereas the families Haemadipsidae, Haemopidae, and Hirudinidae, as well as the genera Hirudo or Ali- olimnatis, were found not to be monophyletic. The results provide insight on the phylogenetic positions for the taxonomically problematic families Americobdellidae and Cylicobdellidae, the genera Semiscolex, Patagoniobdella, and Mesobdella, as well as genera traditionally classified under Hirudinidae. Each element of these events has been well studied in vertebrates and in some invertebrates such as annelids. From these different researches, it appears that mammalian innate immunity could be considered as a mosaic of invertebrate immune responses. Annelids belonging to the lophotrochozoans' group are primitive coelomates that possess specially de- veloped cellular immunity against pathogens including phagocytosis, encapsulation and spontaneous cytotoxicity of coelomocytes against allogenic or xenogenic cells. They have also developed an important humoral immunity that is based on antimicrobial, hemolytic and clotting properties of their body fluid. There has been very few papers on leeches of Batracobdella algira . The aim of the presently reported study was to provide the measurements and, for the first time, description and characteristics of the reproductive and digestive systems of B. algira . The material used in this study was collected from frogs, Rana saharica Boulenger, 1913, in April 1987 by H. Hotz in Béja in Tunisia (11 individuals) and by R. Ben Ahmed in 2008 from the skin of Bufo mauritanicus Schlegel, 1841 in Nabeul in Tunisia (18 individuals). The relative length of the specimens ranges between 1.48 and 4.07. The digestive system of leeches has a standard structure for the species from the family Glossiphoniidae. Male and female gonopores are separated by two annuli. Ovisacs are as long as 5 neurosomits. The characteristic features of the male reproductive system of Batracobdella are sperm ducts, which are twisted in a small area and placed near to atrium. This study will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of the host–parasite relation. They represent mainly thermophilous freshwater species, inhabiting stagnant as well as running waters, a few species are amphibious. Leeches arecommon in eutrophic waters and often serveas indicators of pollution. Although someof them arepopular and well described – such as themedicinal leech ( Hirudo medicinalis ) – their study in theterritory of the Czech Republic has been neglected for a long time. Dr. Vladimír Košel from theComenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia) was theonly onewho has recently studied this group in detail (e.g. Košel 1999, 2001, 2004 and Košel & Beran 2006). Our study aims at summarizing current information about the distribution of leeches in theCzech Republic with special respect to new and rare species and at someidentification problems. An advanced check-list is submitted wherethedistribution of taxa is given separately for the Bohemian and Moravian regions. Both published data including thePERLA database(Kokeš et al. 2006), and our own records have been used. The phylogenetic relationships of Glossiphoniidae, a leech family characterised by its high degree of parental care, were investigated with the combined use of morphological data and three molecular datasets. There was strong support for monophyly of most accepted genera in the group, many of which are consistent with eyespot morphology. The genera Desserobdella Barta & Sawyer, 1990 and Oligobdella Moore, 1918 are suppressed as junior synonyms of Placobdella Blanchard, 1893 and thus recognising each of Placobdella picta (Verrill, 1872) Moore, 1906, Placobdella phalera (Graf, 1899) Moore, 1906, and Placobdella biannulata (Moore, 1900), comb. nov. The species Glossiphonia elegans (Verrill, 1872) Castle, 1900 and Helobdella modesta (Verrill, 1872), comb. nov. are resurrected for the North American counterparts to European non-sanguivorous species. Glossphonia baicalensis (Stschegolew, 1922), comb. nov. is removed from the genus Torix Blanchard 1898 and Alboglossiphonia quadrata (Moore, 1949) Sawyer, 1986 is removed from the genus Hemiclepsis Vejdovsky, 1884.
