These are commonly called \The Isomorphism Theorems": First Isomorphism Theorem: \Fundamental Homomorphism Theorem" Second Isomorphism Theorem: \Diamond Isomorphism Theorem" Third Isomorphism Theorem: \Freshman Theorem" Fourth Isomorphism Theorem: \Correspondence Theorem" All of these theorems have analogues in other algebraic structures: rings, vector spaces, modules, and Lie algebras, to name a few. In this lecture, we will summarize the last three isomorphism theorems and provide visual pictures for each. We will prove one, outline the proof of another (homework!), and encourage you to try the (very straightforward) proofs of the multiple parts of the last one. Finally, we will introduce the concepts of a commutator and commutator subgroup, whose quotient yields the abelianation of a group. M. The Structure Theory of Complete Local Rings
The structure theory of complete local rings Introduction In the study of commutative Noetherian rings, localization at a prime followed by com- pletion at the resulting maximal ideal is a way of life. Many problems, even some that seem \global," can be attacked by first reducing to the local case and then to the complete case. Complete local rings turn out to have extremely good behavior in many respects. A key ingredient in this type of reduction is that when R is local, Rb is local and faithfully flat over R. We shall study the structure of complete local rings. A complete local ring that contains a field always contains a field that maps onto its residue class field: thus, if (R; m; K) contains a field, it contains a field K0 such that the composite map K0 ⊆ R R=m = K is an isomorphism. Then R = K0 ⊕K0 m, and we may identify K with K0. Such a field K0 is called a coefficient field for R. The choice of a coefficient field K0 is not unique in general, although in positive prime characteristic p it is unique if K is perfect, which is a bit surprising. The existence of a coefficient field is a rather hard theorem. Once it is known, one can show that every complete local ring that contains a field is a homomorphic image of a formal power series ring over a field. It is also a module-finite extension of a formal power series ring over a field. This situation is analogous to what is true for finitely generated algebras over a field, where one can make the same statements using polynomial rings instead of formal power series rings. -
On One-Sided Prime Ideals

HANSEN This paper contains some results on prime right ideals in weakly regular rings, especially V-rings, and in rings with restricted minimum condition. Theorem 1 gives information about the structure of V-rings: A V-ring with maximum condition for annihilating left ideals is a finite direct sum of simple V-rings. A characterization of rings with restricted minimum condition is given in Theorem 2: A nonprimitive right Noetherian ring satisfies the restricted minimum condition iff every critical prime right ideal ^(0) is maximal. The proof depends on the simple observation that in a nonprimitive ring with restricted minimum condition all prime right ideals /(0) contain a (two-sided) prime ideal ^(0). An example shows that Theorem 2 is not valid for right Noetherian primitive rings. The same observation on nonprimitive rings leads to a sufficient condition for rings with restricted minimum condition to be right Noetherian. It remains an open problem whether there exist nonnoetherian rings with restricted minimum condition (clearly in the commutative case they are Noetherian). Theorem 1 is a generalization of the well known: A right Goldie V-ring is a finite direct sum of simple V-rings (e.g., [2], p. 357). Theorem 2 is a noncommutative version of a result due to Cohen [1, p. 29]. Ornstein has established a weak form in the noncommuta- tive case [11, p. 1145]. In §§1,2,3 the unity in rings is assumed (except in Proposition 2.1), but most of the results are valid for rings without unity, as shown in §4. -

4-8-2018 Ring Homomorphisms Definition. Let R and S be rings. A ring homomorphism (or a ring map for short) is a function f : R → S such that: (a) For all x,y ∈ R, f(x + y)= f(x)+ f(y). (b) For all x,y ∈ R, f(xy)= f(x)f(y). Usually, we require that if R and S are rings with 1, then (c) f(1R) = 1S. This is automatic in some cases; if there is any question, you should read carefully to find out what convention is being used. The first two properties stipulate that f should “preserve” the ring structure — addition and multipli- cation. Example. (A ring map on the integers mod 2) Show that the following function f : Z2 → Z2 is a ring map: f(x)= x2. First, f(x + y)=(x + y)2 = x2 + 2xy + y2 = x2 + y2 = f(x)+ f(y). 2xy = 0 because 2 times anything is 0 in Z2. Next, f(xy)=(xy)2 = x2y2 = f(x)f(y). The second equality follows from the fact that Z2 is commutative. Note also that f(1) = 12 = 1. Thus, f is a ring homomorphism. Example. (An additive function which is not a ring map) Show that the following function g : Z → Z is not a ring map: g(x) = 2x. Note that g(x + y)=2(x + y) = 2x + 2y = g(x)+ g(y). Therefore, g is additive — that is, g is a homomorphism of abelian groups. But g(1 · 3) = g(3) = 2 · 3 = 6, while g(1)g(3) = (2 · 1)(2 · 3) = 12. -

Basic Definitions and Examples In this first section, I define a ring and give some relevant examples of rings we have encountered before (and might have not thought of as abstract algebraic structures.) I will not cover many of the intermediate structures arising between rings and fields (e.g. integral domains, unique factorization domains, etc.) The interested reader is referred to Dummit and Foote. Definition 1.1 (Rings). Kernel-based machine learning algorithms abandon the explicit represen- tation of data items in the vector space in which the sought-after patterns are to be detected. Instead, they implicitly mimic the geometry of the feature space by means of the kernel function, a similarity function which maintains a geometric interpreta- tion as the inner product of two vectors. Knowledge structures and ontologies allow to formally model domain knowledge which can constitute valuable complementary information for pattern discovery. For kernel-based machine learning algorithms, a good way to make such prior knowledge about the problem domain available to a machine learning technique is to incorporate it into the kernel function. This thesis studies the design of such kernel functions. First, this thesis provides a theoretical analysis of popular similarity functions for entities in taxonomic knowledge structures in terms of their suitability as kernel func- tions. It shows that, in a general setting, many taxonomic similarity functions can not be guaranteed to yield valid kernel functions and discusses the alternatives. Secondly, the thesis addresses the design of expressive kernel functions for text mining applications. A first group of kernel functions, Semantic Smoothing Kernels (SSKs) retain the Vector Space Models (VSMs) representation of textual data as vec- tors of term weights but employ linguistic background knowledge resources to bias the original inner product in such a way that cross-term similarities adequately con- tribute to the kernel result. -
Right Ideals of a Ring and Sublanguages of Science
RIGHT IDEALS OF A RING AND SUBLANGUAGES OF SCIENCE Javier Arias Navarro Ph.D. In General Linguistics and Spanish Language http://www.javierarias.info/ Abstract Among Zellig Harris’s numerous contributions to linguistics his theory of the sublanguages of science probably ranks among the most underrated. However, not only has this theory led to some exhaustive and meaningful applications in the study of the grammar of immunology language and its changes over time, but it also illustrates the nature of mathematical relations between chunks or subsets of a grammar and the language as a whole. This becomes most clear when dealing with the connection between metalanguage and language, as well as when reflecting on operators. This paper tries to justify the claim that the sublanguages of science stand in a particular algebraic relation to the rest of the language they are embedded in, namely, that of right ideals in a ring. However, we've never really spelled out the details about what this means. We will study a special type of function between groups, called a homomorphism. An isomorphism is a special type of homomorphism. The Greek roots \homo" and \morph" together mean \same shape." There are two situations where homomorphisms arise: when one group is a subgroup of another; when one group is a quotient of another. The corresponding homomorphisms are called embeddings and quotient maps. Also in this chapter, we will completely classify all finite abelian groups, and get a taste of a few more advanced topics, such as the the four \isomorphism theorems," commutators subgroups, and automorphisms. Binary operations 1 Binary operations The essence of algebra is to combine two things and get a third. We make this into a definition: Definition 1.1. Let X be a set. A binary operation on X is a function F : X × X ! X. However, we don't write the value of the function on a pair (a; b) as F (a; b), but rather use some intermediate symbol to denote this value, such as a + b or a · b, often simply abbreviated as ab, or a ◦ b. For the moment, we will often use a ∗ b to denote an arbitrary binary operation. Definition 1.2. A binary structure (X; ∗) is a pair consisting of a set X and a binary operation on X. Example 1.3. When working with transformations T : Rm → Rn in Math 341, you found that any linear transformation can be represented by multiplication by a matrix. At some point after that you were introduced to the concepts of the null space and column space of a matrix. In this section we present the analogous ideas for general vector spaces. Definition 2.4: Let V and W be vector spaces, and let T : V → W be a transformation. We will call V the domain of T , and W is the codomain of T . Definition 2.5: Let V and W be vector spaces, and let T : V → W be a linear transformation. • The set of all vectors v ∈ V for which T v = 0 is a subspace of V . It is called the kernel of T , And we will denote it by ker(T ). • The set of all vectors w ∈ W such that w = T v for some v ∈ V is called the range of T . It is a subspace of W , and is denoted ran(T ). It is worth making a few comments about the above: • The kernel and range “belong to” the transformation, not the vector spaces V and W . If we had another linear transformation S : V → W , it would most likely have a different kernel and range.
