Yiddish Readers Circle – Vos iz dos? Noon at the JCC Sponsor: Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor

A special program featuring the reading of a short story by Sholem Aleichem (with English translation and transliteration) followed by a Yiddish sing-a-long and interactive Yiddish-themed activities. Yale Strom is a Director, Composer, Musician, Writer and Photographer who has directed eight award-winning documentary films and has composed music for countless others. He was the first documentary filmmaker in history to be given his own run at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Walter Reade Theatre, where “The Last Klezmer” broke previous box office records. “The Last Klezmer” was short-listed for an Academy Award. Jeffrey Veidlinger is the Joseph Brodsky Collegiate Professor of History and Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan. He is an expert in modern Russian and Eastern European Jewish history and was named a “Top Young Historian” by the History News Network in 2006. He received his PhD from Georgetown University. Samuel Norich is the publisher of the Yiddish Forverts and the English Forward newspapers, and has served as chief executive of The Forward Association since 1997. He is the author of “What Will Bind Us Now: A Report on the Institutional Ties between Israel and American Jewry.” He was the Executive Director of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research from 1980 to 1992. He was educated at Columbia, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cost: Free. No registration required.

Anita Norich is the Tikva Frymer-Kensky Collegiate Professor of English Language and Literature and of Judaic Studies at the U of M. She earned her Ph.D. in Victorian literature from Columbia University and studied Yiddish literature at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Klezmer Musician Workshop 10 am at JCC Sponsor: Ann Arbor Reconstructionist Congregation

Maxwell Street’s clarinetist, violinist and pianist will lead a master class to teach musicians of all levels how to play in the klezmer style. The musicians will receive band arrangements and coaching. By the end of the workshop, the musicians will play together as an orchestra!

All musicians are welcome, but participants should be able to read music and play their instrument at an intermediate or advanced level.
