It has become a serious problem of cities of both Developed and Under- developed region. The rapid population and areal growth of cities and intensive urban development have intensified this problem. Cities are generally flooded when excessive precipitation takes place beyond the capacity of surface drainage. Urban sprawl and urban encroachment intensify this problem in form of reducing rainwater infiltration and increasing surface runoff. Lack of planning about rainwater and sewerage discharge and population growth aggravate this problem. Like other major cities of the world problem of urban flooding has been intensifying in Karachi City which is the largest city and financial hub of Pakistan. The monsoon rain creates a serious problem for city dwellers and urban planners. In view of the significance of the problem the present study is an attempt to examine the problem of urban flooding in historical perspective and evaluate the surface drainage problem in context of urban growth and urban planning. This study was aimed to measure the water quality of eight different creeks around Port Qasim. Samples were collected and analyzed using standard procedures during February and March, 2009. The parameters including pH, Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate, Chloride, Calcium, Potassium, Zinc, Iron, Cobalt, Chromium, Manganese and Cadmium were determined. The result shows that Bakran creek and Gharo-Phitti creeks are heavily polluted compared to other creeks. This study recommends that wastes from the industries or sewerage should be treated before being discharge into the creek system. In this research, the heavy metals in the surface water samples collected from Lyari River and adjoining coastal areas of Karachi namely; Fish Harbour, Netty Jetty, West Wharf, Naval Dockyard and Sandspit were analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results of the analysis indicate that the mean concentrations of all metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb & Zn) except for Cr, in Lyari River and Karachi fish harbor were significantly higher than the standard values. However, metals concentration decreased gradually as the distance from the discharged point increased and at the Sandspit point where no mixing of wastewater, the concentration was within safe limits. Moreover, the level of heavy metal concentration in the water samples were in following descending order Zn>Mn>Fe>Cu>Ni>Pb. Compare to other metal element, the Zn level was notably high and its main source of pollution could be the domestic and industrial waste as well as shipping activity. The study findings therefore suggest that incorporating quick remedial measures can combat pollution and help in achieving the socioeconomic sustainability. Email: [email protected] This paper describes the results of the surveys carried out along Ras Muari (Cape Monze, Karachi, Sindh) by the Italian Archaeological Mission in Lower Sindh and Las Bela in and . The surveyed area coincides with part of the mythical land of the Ichthyophagoi, mentioned by the classical chroniclers. Many archaeological sites, mainly scatters and spots of fragmented marine and mangrove shells, were discovered and AMS dated along the northern part of the cape facing the Hab River mouth. The surveys have shown that fisher and shell gatherer com- munities temporarily settled in different parts of the headland.
