>BELLA= IS BACK CANDY RIDE FILLY >SEPARATES= HERSELF FROM THE COMPETITION >TDN Rising Star= Separationofpowers (Candy Ride {Arg}) took a major step forward from a maturity perspective, successfully stalking and pouncing en route to an authoritative victory in the GI Frizette S. at Belmont. Entering off a somewhat disappointing third-place finish as the 3-5 favorite behind Lady (Tiz Wonderful) in the GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga Sept. 2, the bay rallied steadily into the stretch and held safe Caledonia Road (Quality Road) by four lengths. With her win, Separationofpowers earned a AWin and You=re In@ berth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 4. "My staff deserves a lot of the credit,@ winning trainer Chad Brown said. Entering the stretch on even terms with pacesetting Princess Karen (Stay Thirsty), she easily drew clear under minimal encouragement and came home as much the best. AWhat I found interesting today was that she settled really nicely,@ Smith said. AIn the past I don=t think she would have done that. She would have just run on by and opened up by five, six or seven and coasted on home. Today, she rated nicely and I had horse left. When I picked her up at the eighth pole she really got into the bridle. I got after her one time just to run through the wire. The next race is seven-eighths and she needs to be ready.@ Cont. p3

Separationofpowers | NYRA photo

Brown continued, AShe drew the rail in the Spinaway. She had gone wire-to-wire in her debut, so she was of forced. She's always trained kind in the morning and she's a real easy horse to be around.@ Away without incident as the favorite, the $190,000 Keeneland November weanling purchase was held up off the pace behind a quarter-mile in :23.26, but was taken into about the three path midway on the backstretch run and stalked the pace from close up through a half in :46.95. A bit deep on the turn, the Klaravich runner looked to be spinning her wheels and one-paced when drifting in a touch at the quarter pole, but Jose Ortiz got her back to the outside at the three-sixteenths and she took care of business from there. Winning rider Jose Ortiz said the filly=s ability to settle made all the difference in Saturday=s affair. "She broke really well and I had an opportunity to put her in the clear early and I think that was the key to win the race,@ Ortiz said. AI put her in the clear and we went three-wide the whole way. We went easy.@ When asked about the juvenile=s development, Brown added, "A lot of credit goes to Nick de Meric in Ocala. Him and his team broke her and prepared her for us. She's been a real easy horse to train since she's come in. She learned her lessons well in Ocala.@ Separationofpowers toyed with her competition in her career debut, winning a six-furlong maiden heat at Saratoga in wire-to- wire fashion by 11 3/4 lengths July 30--a performance that earned her >Rising Star= status. Entered back in the Spinaway, she engaged in a heated early pace duel with previously undefeated Pure Silver (Mission Impazible) and, despite getting the better of that foe, had nothing left late to hold off the closers.

"We're confident [going to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies],@ Brown said. AI know it's a tough division, there's some horses out west who look very good. This horse always gave us the impression she would be better around two turns. You look at her pedigree and you look at her physically, how much she's grown through the course of this summer, I'm excited to get her around two turns."

Pedigree Notes: The 12th Grade I winner for her sire, Separationofpowers is out of a dam who is a half-sister to SW Fusa Code (Fusaichi Pegasus) and SP Black Hawk War (War Front). Second dam Lasting Code (Lost Code) was a seven-time stakes winner. The winner=s dam produced a colt by Declaration of War in 2016, a filly by Verrazano this spring and was bred back to Kantharos.

Stepping up to top-level competition for the first time, Joe Allen=s War Flag was the recipient of a race shape that was significantly different than it appeared on paper and held off the more experienced Dacita to punch her own ticket to the GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar in 27 days= time. While Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), conqueror of the boys in the GI Man O=War S. earlier this season, appeared to be the controlling speed on paper, it unfolded a fair bit differently, as Grand Jete (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who was bottled up last time in the closing stages of Dacita=s GI Beverly D. S. success, took the early initiative and took up the running, relegating Zhukova to a stalking second. War Flag more or less fell into a perfect spot behind those dueling front-runners, while Dacita took up a position one from the rear. The pace was not breakneck by any stretch, but neither was Grand Jete allowed any breathers and a third internal quarter-mile in :23.34 for a composite six-furlong clocking of an above-par 1:12.60 would have had Jose Oritz smiling as the Flower Bowl field hit the far turn. The leading rider hit the accelerator on War Flag at the five-sixteenths and they loomed boldly three wide as Dacita followed that move into the lane. Zhukova was the first beaten and though Grand Jete battled on gamely at the inside and led into the final half- furlong, but War Flag grabbed her with 70 yards to go and held sway as Dacita took a dive at her late.

"[Winning trainer] Shug [McGaughey] told me to ride it like it comes up. If she's on the lead, she's on the lead; if she's second, she's second; if she's third, third,@ said Ortiz, who swept the day=s Grade I features. AIt was a perfect setup for me. I sat right behind them and when I was ready to move, I got clear on the other side. It was a small field, I had no problems.@ Winner of three of five in France for Jean-Claude Rouget, including a Group 3 in her European finale, War Flag annexed a Monmouth allowance in June ahead of a runner-up effort in the GIII Matchmaker S. July 30. She was most recently third as the favorite in the 11-furlong GIII Glens Falls S. at Saratoga Sept. 2.

Pedigree Notes: War Flag becomes the 16th individual Grade I/Group 1 winner for her sire, a collection that includes her full-brother Helene Super Star, the former Lines of Battle, who won the G1 Champions and Chater Cup in Hong Kong. In addition to her black-type winning half-siblings listed in the chart, War Flag is also kin to the unraced Photograph (Unbridled=s Song), the dam of French Group 3 winner War Dispatch (War Front), who was also third in the 2015 G1 Prix du Jockey Club; and GSP George Patton (War Front). War Flag=s second dam produced none other than the influential sire Dynaformer and his half-sister Alvear (Seattle Slew), the dam of GISW Offlee Wild (Wild Again). Andover Way=s half-brother was GSW & MGISP Darby Creek Road (Roberto). Black Speck was barren to War Front in 2015 and 2016, foaled a colt by Uncle Mo this year and is reported to have been bred to both stallions in 2017.

WINX EXITS TURNBULL IN GOOD SHAPE COLT Fresh off her 21st consecutive victory in the G1 Turnbull S. on Saturday, champion Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) exited the race WINS LEGACY S. in good order. The Chris Waller trainee will next attempt to complete a G1 Cox Plate hat trick on Oct. 28, with Kingston Town (Aus) (Bletchingly {Aus}) the only previous three-time victor. AShe ate up last night and we're happy with her this morning for sure," Johanne Taylor told Racenet.com Sunday. "We all know what she's capable of and without the ear muffs yesterday she really woke up. It was very special, a bit overwhelming and she's just a once in a lifetime horse. Our job now is to keep her safe and happy to the Cox Plate. It's fantastic to see the reception she gets from the crowd--she's a bit like a rockstar and I think she knows it too."

IN TDN AMERICA TODAY UNIQUE BELLA IS BACK IN L.A. ‘TDN Rising Star’ Unique Bella (Tapit) returned in a big way with Gobi Desert | Racing Post an easy win in the GIII L.A. Woman S. at Santa Anita. Click or tap Gobi Desert made an instant impression on debut when here to go straight to TDN America. accounting for some smart types including Ballydoyle=s Threeandfourpence (War Front), who is being touted as a possible G1 Dewhurst runner on Saturday, and another subsequent winner in London Icon (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) over seven furlongs at The Curragh Aug. 20. Beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Brick By Brick when second as the odds-on favourite for the Listed Blenheim S. dropping back to this trip at Fairyhouse a month later, the bay stepped up to reverse that form and register a first black-type success. Keen under restraint racing towards the rear early, he enjoyed an uninterrupted run up the centre of the track and stayed on strongly to deny Golden Spell inn the final yards. Trainer Ger Lyons said, AHe hated the ground. Colin blamed himself the last day for riding him too prominent, but rode him the way he wanted to today. You have to ride him cold, but he=s a seven-furlong minimum horse on better ground. I should think that will be his final run and hopefully we will hold on to him. He will be a nice horse next year on better ground going further. You couldn=t have been more negative and the only positive thing we can say about the experience is that he won.@ Cont. p8 (Click here) TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 2 OF 16 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • 9 OCTOBER, 2017

HEIR APPARENT by John Boyce One of the highlights of the 2016-17 season has been the emergence of Arrowfield stallion Snitzel (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}) as a major force. His record year with 32 juvenile winners including eight stakes winners was truly remarkable. It's not that we didn't know about Snitzel--this is his ninth season with runners--the fascinating thing with him is that it shows what's possible once a stallion starts to receive the nation's very best mares. In Snitzel's case, he's become the hottest sire around and is poised to take over the baton from his illustrious father Redoute's Choice (Danehill) at Arrowfield. As things stand, Snitzel has a 10.3% black-type winners-to-runners strike-rate, which places him behind only Redoute's Choice (11.1%) among active sires in Australia and New Zealand. The question everyone's asking now is can Snitzel start to match his excellent sire's remarkable output. If he can, his access to the highest quality of mares in recent years will have helped significantly. In his first four years at stud, the son of Redoute's Choice covered less than 50 elite mares in total. Then from 2011 onwards, his opportunities started to increase markedly. That year he attracted 28 elite mares, followed by 49 in 2012, 99 in 2013. Last season's juveniles are from a group of mares that featured 107 elite mares. Snitzel's best 10 runners have a combined average Timeform rating of 120.3. He'll need to get to a figure of 124.3 to match his great sire. That's an average of four pounds per runner, but you couldn't bet against him doing so.

Barry Lynch, who joined Lillingston Regular Columnists Andrew Caulfield Bloodstock in 2012 after Alison Brassil John Berry graduating from the Kevin Blake programme, encapsulated the entrepreneurial spirit of the Tom Peacock course when he decided to go out on his own and establish Lynch Bloodstock earlier this year. Current Godolphin Flying Starer Alison Brassil caught up with Barry to see how his first year as an independent bloodstock agent was going. Cont. p4

TDN Q&A With Barry Lynch Cont.

AB: Can you tell me a bit about your path to getting a place on Godolphin Flying Start?

BL: I grew up around horses on my family farm in Co.Cork. We were very lucky to breed horses like Lilly Langtry, Beaver Patrol and Close To You and it was those horses that really sparked my interest in racing. I spent some of my summers from school and university working for Brendan Holland's Grove Stud, as well as various pre-trainers and consignors. It was after I studied business and law at UCD that I realised I wanted a career in racing and Godolphin Flying Start was a fantastic gateway into the industry.

AB: You recently started up your own bloodstock agency. How has the first year gone so far?

Barry Lynch

BL: It has been very positive, and interesting. I have been extremely fortunate that the horses I have bought so far have done very well. The first horse I bought after I went out on my own--in conjunction with Alastair Donald--Beat The Bank, has been a very prolific horse for Andrew Balding this year winning four of his five starts including a listed race, a Group 3 and the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket last Friday. Another filly that I bought, Madam Dancealot, won a Grade II and was Grade I-placed in the U.S. A lot of my business involves sourcing horses in training for foreign markets and I have been lucky enough to have a good base of clients to keep the business rolling. I have realised that going out on your own is so competitive but it is also extremely rewarding when you find a good horse. TDN Q&A With Barry Lynch Cont. AB: What are the most important qualities to have as a bloodstock agent and how did Godolphin Flying Start prepare you for it?

BL: Patience is a virtue in my job. To do well in anything, you have to work very hard and be diligent and disciplined. Those were qualities that I definitely got from Godolphin Flying Start. The education and the contacts that the course gives you really equips you well for a career in bloodstock.

AB: After Godolphin Flying Start, you worked for Lillingston Bloodstock for five years. What are the major changes you have noticed in the bloodstock industry since you started?

BL: It has definitely become a more international business and I've noticed that becoming more prevalent as my career is progressing. It seems that more and more business is done on a global scale, with Australians and Americans buying in Europe and vice versa. Another change has been that owners have become fewer in number but larger in terms of their own outfits; there are more super-power owners in the industry today as opposed to many small owners.

AB: What are the most important traits that you look for in a horse and what do you try to avoid?

BL: I like to see a horse with a bit of scope and length. They of course need to be correct with good limbs and good bone, however the real deciding factor is how they move and their action. A good walk and a good temperament is the most important thing.

TDN Q&A With Barry Lynch Cont. AB: We are halfway through the yearling sale season. Do you have any comments on the current yearling market today?

BL: The yearling market seems very polarised in my view. There is great trade for the top-level yearlings with big pedigrees that are by the right stallions; however, there are fewer and fewer buyers there for the yearlings in the middle and lower end of the market.

AB: Are there any young sires whose first yearlings have impressed you at the sales this season?

BL: I have been quite impressed with the first yearlings by No Nay Never and (GB) that I've seen. They seem to be athletic, good-walking horses and I'm looking forward to seeing them on the racecourse next year.

AB: What is your advice for anyone aspiring to have a career in the bloodstock industry?

BL: My advice would be to work hard, listen to the people around you in the industry and be respectful. Be as friendly and as positive as you can. In the Thoroughbred industry, you have to be able to roll with the punches and keep staying in there. When it all works out, it is the most rewarding industry to work in.
