The February General Meeting of the WCRA will be held at Rainbow Creek Station in Confederation Park in Burnaby following the AGM. In 1981, the roundhouse will soon be vacated by the railway, and the Provincial collection will move to BC Rail at North Vancouver. Investment Element of the 2010 Florida Rail System Plan 2.0 Current Freight Rail System and Services in Florida 2.1 Overview The Florida rail system is comprised of 2,786 miles of mainline track, which are owned by 15 operating line-haul railroads and terminal or switching companies, as well as 81 miles owned by the State of Florida. Florida’s rail system includes 2 Class I Railroads (CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Corporation), 1 Class II (Florida East Coast Railway), 11 Class III (Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway AN Railway, Bay Line Railroad, First Coast Railroad, Florida West Coast Railroad, Florida Central Railroad, Florida Midland Railroad, Florida Northern Railroad, Georgia and Florida Railway, Seminole Gulf Railway, and South Central Florida Express) and 1 railroad specializing in switching and terminals (Talleyrand Terminal).9 The largest operator in the State is CSX Transportation, which owns more than 53 percent of the statewide track mileage. In 2008, Florida’s railroads carried nearly 1.6 million carloads – 19 percent less than in 2006 – and approximately 83 million tons of freight, representing a 25 million ton (23 percent) decrease from 2006.10 During that year, railroads handled freight equivalent to roughly 5.0 million heavy trucks.11 Nonetheless, railroads continue to support thousands of jobs throughout the State and assist Florida’s industries to remain competitive with international and domestic markets for fertilizer, construction rock, consumer goods, paper products, processed 9 U.S. Class I Railroads are line-haul freight railroads with 2007 operating revenue in excess of $359.6 million (2006 operating revenues exceeding $346.7 million). -

Colorado Springs, Colorado, July 31, 1901. To the Happy Successors of the People of the Twentieth Century, Greeting: In the upbuilding of an empire, certain essentials are so necessary, success would be impossible without them. Among these essentials, transportation facilities stand first. The people of Colorado, during the years 1867 and 1868 when the plans of the Union Pacific Company were developing, knew this and they watched the progress of events closely. When it was decided to construct the Great Trans-Continental Line by way of Cheyenne leaving Colorado to the south without connection with the outside world, despair took possession of all classes. In time, however, the bolder spirits recovered their courage and an earnest effort was made to protect the interests of the people of the Territory. The organization of the Denver Pacific Railway and Telegraph Company followed a period of earnest agitation and discussion. The officers of this Company were John Evans, President; John Pierce, Vice President; R.R. McCormic, Sect'y.; D.H. Moffit, Jr., Treasurer; and Col. L.H. Eicholtz, Chief Engineer. These gentlemen promptly undertook the construction of a line from Denver to Cheyenne to connect with the Union Pacific and from Denver east to meet the Kansas Pacific line that was being extended westward. As a result of their efforts the Denver Pacific was completed between Cheyenne and Denver June 24th, 1870. The Kansas Pacific was completed on August 15th, 1870 by laying ten and a quarter miles of track in ten hours; five and an eighth miles being laid by each of two forces, one working eastward and one westward. -

Unauthorized duplication or distribution is strictly prohibited. Introduction The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has always been a symbol of Canada's nation-building experience. Poets, musicians, politicians, historians, and writers have lauded the railway as one of the country's greatest achievements. Indeed, the transcontinental railway was a remarkable accomplishment: its managers, engineers, and workers overcame incredible obstacles to throw the iron track across seemingly impenetrable bogs and forests, expansive prairies, and nearly impassable mountains. The cost in money, human energy, and lives was enormous. Completed in 1885, the CPR was one of the most important instruments by which fledgling Canada realized a vision implicit in the Confederation agreement of 1867-the building of a nation from sea to sea. In the fulfilment of this dream, the CPR, and subsequently the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk systems, allowed the easy interchange of people, ideas, and goods across a vast continent; they permitted the settlement of the Western interior and the Pacific coast; and they facilitated the integration of Atlantic Canada with the nation's heartland. In sum, by expediting commercial, political, and cultural intercourse among Canada's diverse regions, the transcontinentals in general, and the CPR in particular, strengthened the nation. Historiography The first scholarly historical analysis of the Canadian Pacific Railway was Harold Innis's A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In his daunting account of contracts, passenger traffic, freight rates, and profits, he drew some sweeping conclusions. -
